ZNEC Receives Acterra Award
Last Week

The Zero Net Energy Center was the proud winner of an Acterra award in the Sustainable Built  Environment Large Project Award Category. The ZNE Center was presented with the award at the Acterra 25thAnniversary event held last week. The ZNE Center was honored among other prestigious recipients including Google, Plantronics, Marin Clean Energy, the City of Palo Alto, and others. The evening began with the opportunity for a table top display, along with networking and a televised video sound bite. Present to receive the award were Byron Benton and Darlene Besst, along with Michael Hummel with Environment Building Strategies, and Bob Wallace with Energy ETC.

About Acterra: Acterra is an environmental non-profit serving the Silicon Valley, providing people with tangible, hands-on activities they can do to improve the environment. All of Acterra's work is solution-oriented. They offer volunteer opportunities each year for adults and youth, as well as a broad range of programs, from habitat restoration to carbon reduction and more. As importantly, Acterra teaches people how to become effective environmental change agents in their communities, neighborhoods, workplaces and schools.

Byron Benton Guest Speaker at CHESC
California Higher Education Sustainability Conference, July 20-24th

The California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) highlights cutting-edge research, as well as case studies with proven successes in curriculum development, operational programs, and community partnerships. This unique event is jointly organized by independent/private colleges, California Community Colleges, California State Universities, and the University of California, creating the opportunity for dialogue across institutions.

Higher education campuses have the ability to set the bar of success for public and private institutions throughout the country.  California is often looked to as the laboratory for national policy and is at the forefront of the environmental and sustainability movements, innovating new solutions through research and testing out practices in campus operations that would not be politically viable in other states.  These California institutions are home to some of the largest and most influential public university systems in the country. California Higher Education is well poised to respond to the theme of this year's conference "Can We Change Fast Enough?"  Speakers chosen for this year's event will be given an opportunity to describe how they have been making meaningful impacts in their communities, including building.  Through CHESC, campus stakeholders share best practices, discuss statewide policy, and lay the groundwork for future policies and new programs. An exhibit show highlighting innovative new sustainable technologies and service providers will also be available. Incentives have been added this year to encourage companies to send their research and development staff, so that attendees can engage in meaningful dialog about the nuts and bolts of the solutions being presented. The Chapter will participate and encourage our contractors to take advantage of the networking and learning opportunities. Click here to register your attendance.

Last week, Greg Armstrong, Scot VanBuskirk and Juanita Mitchell attended the Solano/Napa Counties Apprentice Graduation, where 12 inside and four sound & communications apprentices received diplomas at the ceremony. Both Training Director Skip Lucier and Business Manager Dan Broadwater stated that this class has suffered through some of the toughest employment challenges seen over the last five years, but noted that this class was one of the most exceptional groups in recent memory.  Each graduate received generous gifts from Milwaukee Tools, Platt Electric, Klein Tool, NorCal NECA, and IBEW Local Union 180.
