Happy Memorial Day! NorCal NECA pays homage to those who have given their lives in our nation's wars. We hope all have a peaceful and relaxing day off.
"Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace."

The Chapter's 13th Annual Golf Classic was held last Monday at the beautiful Ruby Hill Golf Club. We had another sell-out year, as 36 teams overcame the challenging wind to record some impressive scores. The Collins Electrical team of Brian Gini, Ryan Heeter, Tim Albiani, and Evan Corey scored the Low Gross and came in with an impressive 57. The event began with putting and chipping contests and continued on the course with longest drive, closest to pin and a hole-in-one contest. The day ended with a dinner buffet and raffle of some great prizes. Special thanks to all organizations, golfers and volunteers who participated with us and made it possible to support worthy charitable organizations located within our Chapter's jurisdiction. This year's proceeds will benefit our signature charity, The Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation, as well as Hospice of San Joaquin in Stockton, Modesto Gospel Mission, Aldea Children and Family Services in Napa, and Attitudinal Healing Connection in Oakland.

W. Creighton Schwan Scholarship Award
Presented at the May EBUCC Meeting
|

Congratulations to Priscilla Mezquita, a student at Modesto Junior College for being honored with our W. Creighton Schwan Award. Priscilla is majoring in electrical engineering with an impressive overall GPA of 3.70. The Codes & Standards Committee presented her with a $1,000 check at the EBUCC meeting held at the Chapter office on May 19th. Presenting the check pictured in the photo from left to right were EBUCC Chair Joel Garcia, City of Oakland Chief Building Inspector, Priscilla Mezquita, and Codes & Standards Chair, Greg Carey of Gills Electric Co, Inc.
W. Creighton Schwan dedicated his life to the electrical industry. Starting over 60 years ago as an electrician for the Army Air Corp, Creighton settled into the San Francisco area and contributed to the area as an electrician, an electrical contractor, and eventually an electrical Inspector. Following his retirement from NEMA in 1976, Creighton Schwan embarked on a new career as an independent Code consultant and author. He was a 50-year member of IAEI and a 65-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. A good colleague, generous mentor and graceful writer, W. Creighton Schwan helped generations of electrical contractors, electricians and electrical inspectors sharpen their code knowledge and improve their professionalism. The W. Creighton Schwan Scholarship Award was established in 2007 by the Northern California Chapter, NECA in memory of the late W. Creighton Schwan who was a regular and faithful participant at our monthly EBUCC meeting. The Schwan family also donated funds to ensure continuance of the scholarship so that Creighton's legacy may be honored, and his great contributions remembered and emulated.

IBEW President Ed Hill Visits ZNEC
Discussing Public Perception
|
IBEW International President Ed Hill visited our Zero Net Energy Training Center for the first time on April 30,2015. President Hill spent nearly two hours meeting with JATC staff, instructors, students, Local 595 and NorCal NECA officials during this visit. President Hill shared with the apprentices that the IBEW is leading the way in the Building Trades labor movement, and stated that the biggest challenge is how we are perceived by the public. His visit served to confirm that IBEW Local 595, the Northern California Chapter, and the Alameda County JATC are at the forefront in presenting a positive message... a perception that moves the labor union movement forward.
