Industrialization of Electrical Contracting
Prefabrication & Supply Chain
A new ELECTRI International research project now available to NECA members!
Principal Investigator, Hisham Said, Ph.D., had received an ELECTRI International award to investigate the determinants and best practices of electrical construction industrialization. Throughout the project he worked with a task force of electrical contractors, supply, and manufacturing professionals to provide the initial input, guidance and results validation. Prefab is utilized in this study as a measurable indicator of the industrialization level of electrical construction firms. The study addresses three main objectives:
- Identify and collect best practices of electrical contracting industrialization in terms of prefabrication and supply chain management.
- Identify industry-related prefabrication feasibility determinants that are out of the electrical contractor's control, including economic and market parameters.
- Identify firm-related determinants of prefabrication feasibility within the EC's control, including operations management and supply chain collaborations.
Two models were developed during this research. The first suggests that prefabrication feasibility is dependent on three variables: the union local's acceptance of prefabrication outsourcing, BIM capability, and the strength of vendor relations with the electrical contractor. The second model suggests that prefabrication feasibility is dependent on six variables: The unemployment rate, average number of employees in the local electrical construction firms, average local electricians' hourly wage, the union local's acceptance of prefabrication outsourcing, BIM capability, and the existence of vendor partnership. Both models had the same 75% prediction accuracy when applied to the testing data group.
This study confirms a very positive attitude within the electrical contracting community towards prefabrication as a central piece of business industrialization. Close to 93% of electrical contractors (including those with or without prefabrication facilities) register a positive attitude. However, 42% expressed a positive attitude towards prefabrication while noting that it does not work for every contractor.
The report identifies the critical prefabrication feasibility determinants and suggests best practices for those electrical contractors willing to move from a positive attitude into a successful prefabrication operation.
NECA Members can obtain a free PDF copy of the report from the NECA bookstore by clicking here.

Post Annual Work-Related Injury & Illness Summaries
Reminder for Employers
All California employers are reminded that their annual summaries of 2014 work-related injuries and illnesses were to be posted no later than February 1, 2015, and remain posted in place until April 30, 2015. Specifically, employers are required to summarize information about every work-related death and every recordable work-related injury or illness that occurred during the 2014 calendar year. More information on the definitions of and requirements for recordable work-related fatalities, injuries and illnesses is detailed on website. Such information must be recorded on a workplace posting and be placed in a visible and easily accessible area at each worksite. Employers must post this data even if no workplace injuries occurred. All current and former employees, as well as employee representatives must be allowed to review any injury or illness that took place at the worksite during 2014. Click here to obtain information about an employer's posting requirements and how to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses is available.
