Make Contractor Registration a Priority
Public Works Projects in California
On July 1, 2014, the Department of Industrial Relations launched an online application for public works contractors to meet the requirements of Senate Bill 854. SB 854, which became effective June 20, 2014, establishes a new public works program to replace the Compliance Monitoring Unit and Labor Compliance Program requirements for bond-funded and other public works projects. The new program will cover all public works in the state rather than just selected categories of projects.
Beginning July 1, 2014, contractors MUST register and meet these requirements using the online application before bidding on public works contracts in California. The application also provides agencies that administer public works programs with a searchable database of qualified contractors. Application and renewal are completed online with a non-refundable fee of $300. Read the SB 854 Fact Sheet for a complete list of requirements, as well as Instructions for completing the form.

Deadlines This Week

New OSHA Requirements
Effective January 1, 2015
Under expanded rules that go into effect January 1, 2015, employers will be required to notify OSHA of work-related fatalities within eight hours, and work-related in-patient hospitalizations, amputations or loss of an eye within 24 hours. Previously, OSHA's regulations required an employer to report only work-related fatalities and in-patient hospitalizations of three or more employees. Reporting single hospitalizations, amputations or loss of an eye was not required under the previous rule. The definition of amputation now includes the loss of a digit, which is a finger (including the thumb) or a toe. All employers covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, even those exempt from maintaining injury and illness records, are required to comply with the new reporting requirements. Click here to see OSHA's new plain-language compliance-assistance materials.

Stockton Retirees
Annual Holiday Luncheon
Pete Halver attended the 595 Retirees Annual Holiday Luncheon on December 4th, where members of the Local 595 (591) Retiree club in Stockton gathered at the San Joaquin and Calaveras Counties JATC. Guests had a great time exchanging stories and reminding one and all of what we are thankful for and what we have to look forward to. Family, friends, co-workers, and current IBEW & NECA officials ended the gathering by paying tribute to fondly remembered members.
