STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: John Nemer

It is sometimes said that the best things come in three's. For Ohio State Honors student John Nemer, this might be especially true, as he is pursuing all three of his academic interests, two of which led to an amazing study abroad experience this past summer. Nemer was "born and bred a Buckeye" just outside of Columbus.  His hobbies include running and- especially thanks to Pelotonia- biking. Pelotonia is a bike ride that raises money for the OSU James Cancer Hospital. "Having now completed the ride twice, I have come to enjoy the cathartic experience of exploring new terrain without the distractions of modern technology," Nemer says.

He is pursuing degrees in Arabic, Microbiology, and Spanish, all for good reasons. As a Lebanese-American, he said his trip to Lebanon in 2010 gave him a sense of responsibility for learning Arabic. He had been interested in the language for a long time, but had not learned it growing up. What he had learned was the importance of science and discovery; his grandpa is a retired family practitioner, his mom is a registered nurse, and his three older siblings are physicians-in-training. Given that influence, he knew he wanted to go into something that involved science, and microbiology was a fitting choice. Finally, he enjoyed Spanish in high school and realized that the language is growing quickly in our society as the country becomes more diverse. He believes the ability to speak multiple languages and understand people's cultures will be invaluable in his future in the medical field. Nemer explains, "When I entered college, I wanted to take advantage of my undergraduate years to develop skills and knowledge that would be difficult to gain in the future."
