The Disappearing Spoon or, Scientists Have Fun Too

Most everybody's seen the multicolored chart that hangs in every science lab throughout the country; the periodic table. For me, and many other people, it's sort of boring with all the numbers and vague abbreviations and whatnot. However, Sam Kean has taken it upon himself to write the human history behind the elements on the periodic table. That, mixed with the inherent weirdness behind them is what you get in The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sam Kean. The stories range from serious, such as the impact iodine had on the independence of India, to silly, such as why there is the Bismol in Peptobismol, and beyond. The best part is it's all pretty much true. Sam Kean's clean and fun writing style makes it easier to learn about chemistry while also learning a bit more about our own history at the same time. Even for those of you who are shy about reading non-fiction, I'd recommend you give it a shot anyways. After all, especially in science, reality really is stranger than fiction. The Disappearing Spoon can be found at the John Steinbeck Library.
