Who Needs Sleep? Everyone but This Kid

Darren Bennett is your usual teenage boy, with an unusual best friend, Eric Lederer.  At first, Eric just seems like the classic "weird friend" personality, until he tells Darren his lifelong secret; Eric never sleeps.  Ever. When he was a kid, he thought it was just a thing to lie in bed for 8 hours and do nothing.  After some initial skepticism, Darren accepts the fact that his best friend doesn't sleep, and they just goof off and hang around drawing comics like most creatively inclined teenagers.  That is, until their elaborate sci-fi/action comic book movie trilogy story ties in with Eric's eternal insomnia in a way no one saw coming.  (Seriously I didn't see it coming, it's insane).  The narrative flows well, and at some point it actually fools you into thinking it's a normal sort of high school drama story. That, along with the dramatic implications behind Eric's condition make for a fantastic debut novel for Mr. Pierson. You can find this book, The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To by D.C. Pierson at the John Steinbeck Library.

On July 3rd, as part of the PAWS to Read Summer Reading Program, 60 kids got to visit the Monterey Zoo on River Road and see animals from all over the world.  Children in this picture are getting a lesson on lions.

Little Libraries Come to Salinas!

Friends of the Salinas Public Library (FOSPL) has joined the global effort to take a book and return a book, world wide.  Free Little Libraries are libraries where you can take a book and then leave a book to share for someone else.  If you take a book, you leave a book.  Three Little Free Libraries opened just this month in Salinas.  Here are their locations:

1700 McKinnon Street @ McKinnon Park

420 Central Avenue @ Central Park

Toro Street off Bardin Road @ El Gabilan Park (also called Gabilan Play Lot)

It is FOSPL's goal to put little libraries in every park in Salinas.  Would you like to have a little library in your park?  If you would like to be the steward for a little library in your neighborhood, please contact Mary- Alicia McRae at [email protected].

For more information on the global effort for Free Little Libraries, please go to: http://littlefreelibrary.org/
