Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations. I'm sure you would love to have complete streets in your neighborhood. Bertin Engineering recently had the opportunity to design such a street in Hawthorne, NJ and I've provided a brief summary of this project below.

Bertin Engineering Designs the First "Complete Street" in Passaic County!
 Bertin Engineering has designed the first Complete Street in Passaic County located within approximately 900 feet of right-of-way on Wagaraw Road (County Route 504) in Hawthorne, NJ, in front of a proposed shopping center. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has created and implemented a "Complete Streets Policy" that sets requirements for planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of new and retrofit transportation facilities within public rights of way. Upgrading this segment of Wagaraw Road will increase safety for all roadway users, including those traveling to and from the two nearby municipal parks. The NJDOT has placed the responsibility on the county to proceed with executing the plan in Passaic County along Wagaraw Road. A Complete Street is defined as a means to provide safe access for all roadway users including drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, children and senior citizens by designing and operating a comprehensive, integrated, connected multimodal network of transportation options. Bertin Engineering is proposing crosswalks with handicap ramps at the corners of May Street/Wagaraw Road and Lafayette Avenue/Wagaraw Road intersections. The proposed Complete Street features promote the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers utilizing this section of Wagaraw Road. Signage has been proposed to warn drivers of approaching pedestrian crosswalks and to notify pedestrians of crosswalk locations. Bicycle lanes, bicycle lane signage and bicycle lane striping, including symbols and arrows, are proposed along both directions of Wagaraw Road where feasible. The Wagaraw Road Complete Street Improvement Plan provides for adequate roadway signage such as "No Left Turn", "No Right Turn", "Stop", "Left Lane Must Turn Left", "Pedestrian Crosswalk Ahead", "Bike Lane Begins", "Bike Lane Ends", "Yield to Bikes" and directional arrow signs depicting traffic movement.

In 1986, Calisto J. Bertin, P.E. recognized the need for civil engineering expertise in the rapidly expanding tri-state area and founded Bertin Engineering Associates, Inc on March 17, 1986.
Bertin Engineering began as a one-person company focusing on cost effective engineering solutions.
