Davidson River: Land of the Free
The Transylvania Heritage Museum openedfor the 2015 season on March 7th. The new exhibit is "Davidson River: Land of the Free." This exhibit depicts the important role the Davidson River has played in the history of not one, but three counties: Buncombe, Henderson and Transylvania.
In the exhibit, created in collaboration with the Transylvania County Historical Society, a special emphasis is given to the Allison-Deaver House in celebration of its 200th anniversary. This house , the oldest standing frame home west of the Blue Ridge, is a true historical treasure. It was built in Buncombe County. William Deaver doubled the size of the house when it was part of Henderson County. When the impressive double-engaged porches were added, the property lay within the bounds of the newly formed Transylvania County. The house has remained in a virtually unaltered condition for two centuries.
Visitors to the exhibit can view a model of an actual Carr Lumber Company switchback, once located in Pisgah National Forest. The model was created by Frank Guest. After his death, his daughter donated it to the Museum in his memory.
A few other items that will be on display are logging tools, a history of the Patton Family businesses, artifacts of the Ecusta Paper Corporation, a slab of the Witness Tree, James Deaver's rifle, a Confederate Civil War pouch and Civil War era stool, as well as a quilt made from "Deaver family clothing".
We would like to thank the Pisgah Fish Camp for their sponsorship of this exhibit!

4-H Open House
The 4-H Open house was held on March 31 at the Transylvania County Library. The Museum partners with 4-H for two clubs that meet the third Friday of each month, from 4 until 5 p.m. They are the Farm Fun Club and the History Detectives. Each club had an activity to share. Farm Fun had a Seed Matching Game, and the History Detectives set up artifacts from the Museum for the History Mystery Activity.
