May kicks off our busy season, and we have lots of things going on.  Please be sure to read the Membership Article below, and share it with anyone you think may be interested in becoming a member.

Walking tours, a new exhibit, music on the porch and a car show are all on the schedule for this month.  Come by and enjoy some, or all, of these Museum events.

Please share this newsletter with those who may be interested, and with those who may not even know we exist!  Word of Mouth is our best publicity, so hit that forward button for us, and spread the word!

Membership Drive

This will be an exciting year at the Museum and we need your help to keep the momentum going forward.

The Membership Committee has set the goal of gaining 100 new members this year.

The Museum operates on a shoe string budget with operating funds generated by grants, sponsor- ships and membership dues.  By joining our ranks, you help us ensure that we will be Connecting Community, History & Life in Transylvania County for years to come.  Click here for more information about becoming a member.

Dr. Gaine Cannon.  North Carolina photographer Bruce Roberts traveled with Cannon, capturing this image as Dr. Cannon served the community of Balsam Grove.
Healing Hands Exhibit
Opens May 24th

This exhibit will showcase the medical history of the Transylvania, beginning with the Cherokee medicinal practices and progressing though two hundred years of doctors, mid wives, hospitals and clinics.  A variety of medical instruments will be on display, including a Civil War era embalming table!

This exhibit will be on display from May 24th until November 8th.  We would like to especially thank the Transylvania Regional Hospital, a major sponsor of this exhibit.

Preservation Month

May is Preservation Month! As in years past, the National Trust for Historic Preservation encourages preservation organizations to use this month-long opportunity to showcase how they are celebrating and saving historic places year-round. This year's theme, "New Age of Preservation: Embark, Inspire, Engage,"

"Embark"  Get Involved! Become a member of the Transylvania Heritage Museum.  Volunteer as a docent, or work in the Genealogy Room. Help us fulfill our mission to Connect Community, History & Life.

"Inspire" Love history?  Have a story to share?  Come tell us your story and inspire others to do the same. Collecting oral histories is a great way to save our heritage for future generations.

"Engage" Learn more!  Come visit the Museum before May 17th to Tour some of Transylvania County's Communities or learn about Brevard during the Roaring Twenties with the Behind the Scenes West Main Tour on May 10th.

Help us celebrate our preservation efforts by visiting us or participating in one of our many activities this month. Be sure to use your social media to share your visit with friends. The official hashtag for Preservation Month 2014 is #presmonth.  Hope to see you soon!

Thanks to the City of Brevard  Several Wayfinding Signs have gone up in Brevard over the past several weeks.  We are so very pleased with the Museum signs. Several visitors have mentioned the signs as their way of finding us. If you see any of our City Councilmen, or Mayor Harris, be sure to say THANKS!
Can You Guess?

This item is upside down!  Do you know what it is?
Send your answer here!  Last time, the mystery item was an gudgeon strop, a part of a primitive kind of hinge.  Great detail from William Christie!
