Greetings!
So much is going on at the Museum, in Brevard and in Transylvania County during this time of year, and much more is still yet to come.
The Museum's Founders Day Fair will be held on the grounds of the Museum on Saturday August 31st, from 10 am until 5 pm. Each year, this celebration just gets better and better, so be sure to come spend the day with music, storytelling, craft booths and demonstrations.
Please share this newsletter with those who may be interested, and with those who may not even know we exist! Word of Mouth is our best publicity, so hit that forward button for us, and spread the word! Sincerely - Rebecca Suddeth, Executive Director

The 5th Annual Founders Day Fair will be held Saturday, August 31, 10 am - 5 pm, on the grounds of the Transylvania Heritage Museum on West Main Street. We will have craft sales and demonstrations, musicians and dancers, as well as a Civil War encampment. Food and baked items will be for sale. The Museum will feature Family History displays as well as the current "A River Runs Through It" exhibit.
If you would be willing to volunteer to help with set-up, take-down, or for a couple of hours at the Museum's Bake Sale and Membership booths, please choose a time from the schedule below and let me know your choice of time. Also, if you are aware of crafters, musicians and especially cloggers who would like to participate, please contact Linda Anders at 828-553-6339.
With the entertainment, food, and living history, we expect to have a wonderful day! Hope to see you there! And please pray for dry weather!

Reception at College Walk August 16th
All Museum Volunteers, along with spouses and/or significant others, are invited to attend a special reception at College Walk on August 16th from 4pm - 6pm. This reception will feature heavy hors d'oeuvres provided by College Walk. Museum personnel will speak about the important role that Volunteers play in the Mission of the Transylvania Heritage Museum and the many ways volunteers are utilized. If anyone knows of a person who might like to become a volunteer, please invite them to attend this event. It is a good time to meet other volunteers, board members and get a feel for the work the Museum does.
College Walk is a contributor to the Transylvania Heritage Museum and would like the opportunity to share their services and provide tours of the facility during the reception. Please help make this a successful event for both the Museum and College Walk. RSVP, Rebecca, no later than August 12.

Farm Fun at the Museum
The garden session of the Farm Fun 4-H Club was great -- between the rains! The harvest included the elephant garlic, a delicious sweet cucumber, red onions, sugar snap peas, potatoes, swiss chard, and herbs! The sunflowers are HUGE -- as you will see in the pictures below. The actual flowers are just now forming. We did a lot of weeding....mostly grass that was invading the beds....but it came out easily with the wet soil.If you get a chance....check by the garden to pick any cucumbers that may be ready.....and keep an eye on the peppers and tomatoes as they hopefully ripen. The cabbages should be ready in a couple weeks. And the yellow cauliflower is coming along. We would like to especially thank Walmart for awarding the program a grant this year!

Group Visits Museum
On Monday, July 22, I met a group from Tore's Homes to show them our Museum. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The visitors were clearly happy to visit the Museum. The activities director and the nurse's assistant really took in the exhibit. One found something to buy in Heritage Gifts and the other wants to come back with her grandchildren
Several of the visitors knew Frank Guest who created our replica of a railroad switchback once used by Carr Lumber Company for logging. I played our audio recording of Frank's interview with Joseph Carr for them. The sound of Frank's voice resulted in many smiles.
As they were leaving Barry Curlee, the supervisor who helped care for my mother for her last two years, came in. He spotted a picture of the old cotton mill, and told me about his grandfather who was hired to come to town and help build it, and his father who worked there. He had good memories of growing up across the street from it and what a nice friendly neighborhood it was.
The best part of serving as a docent at the Museum is hearing the stories that people share when they visit. If you would like an opportunity to become a docent, please contact the Museum.
