Eastertide Sunday Forum Offerings
Sundays at 10:10 am
May 5 and 12

The Stations of the Cross and the Resurrection
Led by Dean Justin Lindstrom
in Dean Willey Hall
The Way of the Cross or the Stations of the Cross is a common service of journey, prayer, and meditation.  Come to this class to explore in depth the Stations of the Cross and their meaning.  We will then turn our attention to the Stations of the Resurrection.  A lesser known practice, but one with profound meaning and contemplation for the Easter Season.

Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life
Led by Canon Susan Joplin
in the Parlor
Joy is a gift from God. It is freely given to us by God and we can neither control it, nor can we even define it very easily. In our tradition, one of the ways joy is experienced, is in community, and, is played out in our living into and becoming transformed by compassion.

An Eastertide series is offered for adults wishing to further their own faith journey by exploring how we can live into compassion, both individually and as a community. The series is based on Karen Armstrong's recent book, Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life and the St. Ignatius method of Easter Season prayer exercises.  Led by: Canon Susan Joplin and the 2012-2013 graduates of the Retreat In Daily Life program offered here at St. Paul's: Joan Bowen, John Dunn, Lea Eldridge and Susan Knox.

Of Wolves and Men
Led by James Collins and Ferrella March
in the East Garden Board Room
Join Whole Creation Community as James Collins and Ferrella March co-facilitate a study on the book, Of Wolves and Men by Barry Lopez (available at St. Paul's Cathedral Bookstore; list $20 paperback).
The wolf is closely related to the dog, separated by no more than 15 generations, yet we fear the one and love the other. Our study will be a way to explore our own wildness, and how we discern good from evil. For the first three weeks, we will try to paint a full portrait of the wolf, combining western science and biology with the lived experience of America's indiginous peoples.During the second three weeks, we will explore the myth of the wolf, and how people have used those myths to drive the wolf to extinction.

Parents Bible Study
in the Undercroft Parent Room
Drop your children off at Sunday School in the Undercroft and head down the hall to the new Parents' Room.  Once there, you will find a relaxing environment with a Bible Study written by Dean Justin Lindstrom on the Gospel of the day.  Come and share your thoughts on the Gospel and how to carry that message into your everyday life.

Liturgy We Live
By Dr. Gil Haas
Page 18 of our BCP identifies the Rogation Days (from Latin rogatio - "asking") as the three days before Ascension Day. Close to Ascension Day in the fifth century, three days of fasting and prayer successfully prevented a disaster which threatened Vienne, France. This seasonal practice spread, but it was not immediately adopted by the church since it was thought that fasting was incompatible with Easter joy. When rogation days were added to the church's calendar, fasting was omitted. In England, the days became associated with a blessing of the fields in hopes of a bountiful harvest. On this day, the vicar "beat the bounds" of the parish with willow rods, processing around the fields reciting psalms and the litany. Before well-drawn maps, this action established clearly the boundaries of each parish. Although this custom dates back to the 9th century, it was abolished by Elizabeth I. However, in recent times the practice has been revived. The BCP (pp. 208-9), lists three propers for Rogation Days entitled "fruitful seasons", "commerce and industry", and "stewardship of creation". Lectionaries for these propers are listed on page 930. Our Book of Occasional Services contains material for a Rogation procession.

Jesus said to them, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat."
- Matthew 14:16

SometimAlleluia Fundes the challenge of meeting the hunger of the world can overwhelm us to the point of despair. Whether we are confronted by the gaunt, homeless woman whom we pass in the street, the crowded room of guests at the parish soup kitchen or the news footage of those starving as a result of war or natural disaster, the solution seems beyond us, and our helplessness becomes the agent of our detachment. Jesus, sensing the hunger of those gathered by the Sea of Galilee to hear him teach, instructed his companions to get some food and feed them. Staggered by the size of the crowd, the disciples were overwhelmed by the prospect and responded by distancing themselves from both the task and the people themselves, replying, "We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish." But Jesus knew how to address hunger, both the physical hunger of the crowd and the spiritual hunger of the disciples: one person at a time. And he denied the power of evil the tool it often uses to keep us from even getting started-helplessness. When we are not helpless, neither are those who need our help. -Mark Hollingsworth, Jr.

THE ALLELUIA FUND is a Diocesan-wide offering to build Christ's Church. Its intent is to empower our diocese to respond to God's call to build the church by creating new resources for mission and ministry, and to encourage every member of our Diocese to live more fully in our baptismal covenant.
The Alleluia Fund will be celebrated May 12.

Today's environmental tip is from the Choctaw Nation: Make it a full load!
The average washing machine uses 40.9 gallons of water per load. If you buy a a new washer, shop for a high-efficiency washer that needs less than 28 gallons of water per load. To achieve even greater savings, wash only full loads of laundry or be sure to choose the appropriate load size on the washing machine.

Roof and Restoration Update

Roof 4/24 As you can see we are well into the renovation job now, just grinding away (literally and figuratively).  Here is a picture of a section where the old mortar has been removed and will be replaced by new as the project progresses.  This removal and replacement process will go on for a few weeks.

The R&R Committee also met, on Wednesday, with a lightning protection specialist to discuss the need for and the requirements to bring our current lightening rod system up to code specifications.
