September Eclipses

Purva Phalguni Nakshatra

On September 12th there is a partial Solar eclipse in the sign of Leo. In general, an eclipse is a good time for introspection, reflection, and quiet activity. In Leo, it may be a good time for creativity.

The nakshatra that this eclipse falls in is Purva Phalguni. It's shakti, is the power of procreativity. This would be a good time for psychological reflection on relationships, romantic desire and sexuality. It would also be a good time to reflect on the creative process, and how to bring more creativity into your life.

The deity of this nakshatra is Bhaga, the god of wealth, making this a somewhat volatile period for finances. For most purposes, a period of about 3 days on either side of the eclipse should be avoided when it comes to starting new financial projects. This goes for other important projects as well.

It is interesting to note the volatility that has taken place in the financial markets, starting a few weeks before this eclipse. Sometimes the effect of an eclipse is felt as much as a month or two before the eclipse takes place. The effect can also sometimes last for two or three months after the eclipse.

On September 27th, there will be a total Lunar eclipse in Pisces. Pisces is the sign of spirituality, and this would be a good time to engage in spiritual activity, such as yoga or meditation.

The nakshatra of this eclipse is Uttara Bhadrapada. Uttara Bhadrapada has the shakti (or power) "to bring rain". On the global level, this can suggest continued problems in various areas of the world related to either little or too much rain.

On the personal level, this is a good time to release what is not useful, let go of attachment, and look within for something more lasting. The symbol of Uttara Bhadrapada is a funeral cot, a symbol that reinforces this theme. In India, for example, yogis meditate in crematorium grounds because it reminds them that life is temporary.

The Psychological Profile

And yet this has been grossly underrated, ignored and overlooked by many jyotishis. This is partly due to the fact that India is not a land of psychology. In India, astrologers are reinforced for giving predictions, not for giving psychological insights. For this reason, most vedic astrologers focus on giving prediction on various events in life, and only give a surface treatment to the client's inner wiring.

In this class we will explore the intricate dynamics of psychology. We will not only dissect each astrological combination, one at a time, but we will also delve in to the rich symbolism of the nakshatras, and explore the numerous patterns that emerge as we reveal the inner landscape of the client's unique mental and emotional patterning.

We will also apply this knowledge to art of prediction. Understanding the person's psychological wiring is fundamental for understanding the likely choices he will make, and therefore, the directions he will take with his free will. In fact, if you don't understand psychology, you are more likely to fail in prediction.

This class is open to everyone, and students at all levels are bound to benefit. If you are an advanced or intermediate student, this class will fill in a gap in your understanding and practice of Jyotish. If you are a beginning student, this class will lay a firm foundation for understanding the client. It is the first step in chart analysis, the most important foundation for giving a reading.

Mercury Retro

Mercury will be retrograde from September 17 - October 8, 2015. This is a phenomenon that takes place on a regular basis every few months. If you have heard of Mercury retrograde before, you probably associate it with negatives. Astrologers often tell people to avoid everything during this time. In fact, there is nothing inherently negative about a retrograde Mercury. But like everything, in order to use it in a way that is beneficial, you have to understand its nature.When you think about it, this is true for everything, including people.

When I was in my 30s, I worked for a famous astrologer in London. His name was M.K. Gandhi. Gandhi was not only an astrologer, but a deeply intuitive man, an awakened yogi. He knew that people are all different. Each person's horoscope is completely different, reflecting that person's unique talents and abilities. Gandhi was extremely good at seeing people clearly and then drawing out their gifts. He didn't criticize people for their deficiencies, he helped them realize their strengths.

For example, my friend, Fred, also worked at Gandhi's office in London. Fred was an organizer, and a manager type. Gandhi put him on a long project to organize his office, and to get his bookkeeping together. On the other hand, Gandhiji put me on the project of learning and practicing astrology. He wouldn't let me touch his accounts or move anything in his office. Yet, he let me do readings for his clients. While I ended up becoming an astrologer, Fred ended up being the guy that set the agenda for the budget for the State of California. He did that job for several years and later he became the Dean of a college..

Each person is different and has certain gifts. If you spend all your time focusing on what a person can't do or what he or she are not good at, then you will end up seeing that person as somehow deficient or broken. On the other hand, if you focus on their talents, you will always enjoy being around that person.

That is one of the great insights of astrology. Every individual has a unique and perfect nature. We are all designed for some purpose, and as long as we direct our energy towards that purpose, life flows smoothly.

It is the same with planets. Mercury, during its retrograde phase, has received the reputation of creating problems in communication. But that is only because people sometimes insist on always going forward with new communication and information-oriented activities during this period. If, on the other hand, you use this period to refine or perfect your Mercury-related activity, then Mercury will help to fulfill your aspirations.

By Mercury-related, I mean something signified by Mercury. Mercury rules communication, writing, information, the intellect, education, speech, and on the physical level, the lungs, skin, nervous system, thyroid, ears, hands and neck. Working on improving one or more of these areas or on a project related to one or more of these areas, during the period, will probably result in a very positive outcome..

The USA Enters the Rahu Period

2015-2033

On September 30, 2015, the USA enters the 18 year period of Rahu. This is a major event, astrologically speaking. It brings a period of radical change, transformation, innovation, and upheaval for our country. I will be talking about this long-term period of change at length in my annual presentation at the East West Bookstore, in Mountain View, California, in January, 2016. That talk will be recorded, so if you can't attend, you can get the recording from my website. In the mean time, here are a few points to consider regarding the new Rahu period.

First, in the chart of a country, a major period, called a dasha, is simply a span of time when a particular style of karma (desire) is rising or being expressed in the collective consciousness. A great example of this is the change from the seventeen year period of Mercury , in the USA chart, to the seven year period of Ketu. This took place in 1965.

Mercury ruled the period from 1948-1965. Mercury is placed in the 8th house of the USA chart. The eight house represents power, influence, manipulation, secrets, transformation, change and metamorphosis. Mercury represents communication and the media, in general. This was a time when the USA was developing its clandestine services in a big way. The cold war was in full swing and the CIA and FBI had free reign. The Media began to rule as well, as the influence of television and radio swept over the country.

In 1965, however, the USA went into the Ketu period. Ketu is a planet of renunciation, like a monk, who leaves the world and material life behind, and goes off to a cave to meditate. This was the beginning of the Hippy Generation. Instead of going to caves, they renounced the world and went to communes. This was a very unique, unconventional time. Ketu is placed in the second house, the house of money in the USA chart. That phase, which lasted exactly from 1965 to 1972, exactly corresponded to the significations of Ketu. Ketu also represents medicines, herbs and drugs. This was a time of experimentation with drugs. Ketu also represents Asian cultures, as well as warfare and violence, in the US chart. Although the USA had been involved in Vietnam previous to 1965, it was 1965 when we escalated our troop involvement, culminating in the TET Offensive a few years later. The war went went into overdrive. The war ended when the Ketu period ended in 1972.

The point here is that these periods are noticeable to all of us. Anyone who lived through the period from 1965 - 1972 will tell you that the period was completely and unmistakably unique, and totally in line with the qualities of Ketu.

In October of 2008 we entered a Mars period. The thing to consider about the Mars period is that, due to the fact that the USA is more that 200 years old, we have actually been through the Mars period once before. It started in 1888 and ended in 1895. If you look at your history books, you will see that this period was a period that completely paralleled the period from 2008 - 2015. At my lecture in January of 2008, I listed a number of expected outcomes for the current Mars Period, including a Stock Market crash, wide- spread unemployment, bank failures, and a mortgage crisis. These were all experienced during the first Mars period, from 1888 to 1895. Interestingly, the same set of outcomes were also experienced during the second Mars period from 2008 to 2015. In fact, the stock market crash of 2008 began on the exact day that the USA entered the Mars Period.

So what should we expect in the Rahu period? First, technology will boom. Rahu is the planet of technology and it's period will bring exponential and increasingly rapid growth of all things technical. This happened in the first Rahu period from 1895 to 1913 as well.

Also, there will be major economic changes, as the financial sectors are forced to revamp some of their practices. Rahu is the planet that signifies what is called "shadow banking" in the USA chart. This is the addiction to high-flying, risky investments that was the source of the 2008 melt down. Since 2008, the USA has not dealt with it's addiction to debt and to risky investment. During the Rahu period, the country will go the way of all addicts who have not been able or willing to give up their drug. This will ultimately result in improvements in the economy, but first we will have to face our addictive patterns.

The environment, and our attitudes and policies of managing the environment, will also go through revolutionary changes during the next 18 years. Rahu is the planet of revolution and change. It is placed in Cancer, a water sign, so a big part of that environmental revolution will be related to water.

These are just a few broad categories. I will go into much more depth at the presentation in January. In the mean time, it is quite common at the beginning of a new period, that there is a feeling of imminent change. The first year of the Rahu period might feel unsettled. This could affect financial markets and we could see wider fluctuations in stock prices. The Rahu period begins on October 1st of 2015 and continues for eighteen years.

All this being said, life will go on, so there is no reason to worry. Rahu is also an eighteen year period, and the changes will take place slowly over the entire course of the period, not just at the beginning. Even though parts of the Rahu dasha may feel like a wild ride, the Sun will continue rising, and people will go on living their lives. so there is nothing to worry about. The point of looking at it astrologically is to shed light on the fact that revolutionary change is necessary. We need to embrace that process and not resist it. If we embrace change consciously, instead of being painful, it can be an exciting and amazing period that brings us into unimaginable realms of innovation, understanding and awakening.

This intensive is in three parts.

Part 1 will focus on the areas of finance and career. In the process, you will become more grounded in the fundamentals of chart analysis, as well as the use of dasha and transit techniques for prediction. The area of Artha (the material aspect of life) is an important part of life. These areas of life can be the source of great distress and confusion for many people, especially in our current economic climate. Even if you are a yogi, who never thinks about money or career, you will want to take this class. We will go much deeper than simply analyzing the chart in a mechanical way. We will get to the core of the chart and understand the dharmic aspect of this desire.

Part 2 will focus on remedial measures. I will be showing you how to use gemstones, mantras, yagyas, donations, fasting and other remedial techniques. In addition, I will show you how to bring these practices out of the realm of superstition and use them in a manner that actually makes a connection for both you and your clients. The goal of this aspect of the class is to help each student develop more confidence when recommending remedies, while at the same time, learning to apply remedial techniques in a way that harmonizes with each individual client as well as with modern life.

As with all of my classes, the orientation of this class is towards doing actual readings. My philosophy of teaching is that you learn astrology by doing astrology, not by talking about astrology. The Sierra mountains will provide an excellent environment for a total-immersion experience in this ancient art.

Part 3. Along the way we will explore some of the elements of Prashna, the astrology of asking questions. I will show you how to use the question chart, in order to make interesting predictions and get deeper insights.
