Venus Retrograde
July 25 - September 6

Venus will be retrograde from July 25 - Sept 6,  2015.  Venus is the planet of relationships,  love, affection, emotion, and the arts.  When it is retrograde, all of these things can be refined and perfected. For example, for an artist, this is a great time to refine or perfect a creative project that is already started.  For a couple in a relationship, this is a great time for working out the kinks in the relationship through therapy or simply through internal reflection.

In general, it is a good idea to not start any new endeavor that is related to the significations of Venus during this period.  It can simply make those things more complicated than expected.

When a planet is retrograde,  its energy becomes excessive.  It is like a cup overflowing. A literal example of this can be seen in the chart of Burma, which is going through heaving flooding right now.  Venus is the planet that rules the element of water. Of course, flooding doesn't occur every time Venus goes retro.  Venus also has to be a significant factor in a chart.  In the Burmese chart, in particular,  Venus rules the nakshatra where their planetary period ruler, Mercury is placed.  Venus is also transiting the tenth house, which rules the weather, in the Burmese chart.  There are actually a number of converging factors, all pointing to flooding.

Venus' retrograde phase affects everyone in some way, and it is not all negative. In fact, it offers an opportunity to improve one or more areas of life during the transit.  The following description suggests possible results in your chart during the Venus retrograde period.  Remember to check the birth dates given, since the Vedic zodiac is different than in Western astrology.  If you know your Sun, Moon, or Arudha lagna sign, you can also read the results for those as well.  Remember that the results given here only apply to the period from July 25- September 6, 2015

Vedic Sun Signs

April 13 - May 13  (Aries)   During this period you can work on money, diet, and relationships.  Each of these areas offer an opportunity to improve.  You might find some overflowing, or excessive tendencies during this time. Watch what you eat and spend.

May 14 - June 13 (Taurus)  This is a good time to work on beautifying your home.  It is also a great period for getting back to your health routines or for improving some aspect of your health.

June 14 - July 15 (Gemini)  This period might produce the desire to travel.  If so, you might revisit a place you have been before.  This is also a great time for refining  creative projects that have already been started.

July 16 - August 15  (Cancer)  This period gives the possibility of earning money, but also gives the possibility of spending a lot of money.  Areas that can be improved and refined are money, food, teeth, and friendships.  You might get together with, or hear from an old friend during this time.

August 16 - September 15  (Leo)  During this period you might have the impulse to begin new projects, but this is a better period for refining old projects that have already been started.  This period focuses on you career and communications.  Both of these areas can use some refining and perfecting.

September 16 - October 15 (Virgo)   During this period you might spend money on a number of items for your home or yourself.  This is a good period to work on your diet.  This period also gives the impulse to travel, possibly to a place you have been before.

October 16 -November 14  (Libra)    During this retrograde Venus period you might get together with old friends, or simply find yourself interacting with your social group, or groups in general, in a more intense way.  This would also be a good time for revamping your life goals.

November 15 - December 14  (Scorpio)  Venus is transiting through you 10th house, the house of the career, so this is a good time for cleaning up projects and refining your work.  You could travel during this period, possibly  for work.  You might also collaborate with someone on a project.  This is also a good time for working on the psychological aspect of your relationship.

December 15 - January 12  (Sagittarius)  During this period you might focus on improving your social life and your health.  This is a good time to call up old friends.

January 13 - February 11  (Capricorn)   This is a good time for making some needed changes in your work, or simply for refining a project that you are working on.  This can be a work project or a creative project.

February 12 - March 13 - (Aquarius)  Your home or real estate might be the focus of your attention during this period. This is a great time for cleaning out the cupboards, repainting or redecorating.   This is also a good time for working out any romantic issues in your marriage or relationship through psychotherapy or reflection.

March 14 - April 12   (Pisces)  You can use this period nicely to revamp your exercise or diet  routines and improve your health.  This is also a good time to work on your communication skills.

Giving up the Fantasy and Owning Your Reality

Jyotish, the Sanskrit term for Vedic astrology, means "light".   It is the science that sheds light on the reality of life.  The whole idea of astrology is to provide a symbol system that can help a person see his life as it is, outside of his programming and beliefs.

We all have beliefs.  Many people are very attached to their beliefs, and those beliefs, in turn, become the foundation of their story about themselves.  So a conservative person who has been raised in an environment where the right to bear arms is an important element of their traditional American values, might have a story like this.  "I'm an American, duck-hunting, gun-toting, conservative, Republican.   I'm proud of it.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it!"

We all have stories like this.  You might not be a gun-toting duck hunter, but you still have your story.   "I'm a mother. I work hard.  I put my self second and my kids first."  Or "I'm a vegetarian, yoga practicing, meditator."  Whatever your story, it is simply a projection of your beliefs about yourself.  But the interesting thing is, it is quite possible, that your beliefs about yourself could actually be wrong!

This is especially true when a person holds negative ideas about themselves, such as I am poor, or I am not lovable, or I am always sick.  The fact is, that each person possesses unlimited intelligence, energy, insight, and creativity.  Each human being is an amazing and unique expression of unfathomable intelligence.  So the idea of any human being believing that he or she is limited is ridiculous.  Yet, most of us hold on to limiting beliefs of some type or another.

In the context of spiritual evolution, the great saints and mystics say that every belief you have about yourself is false. That's because the self is really non-dual, pure consciousness.  It's not even a relative thing, so it can't be described or categorized.   That said, there is still a practical point of view, and from that perspective, we do have beliefs about ourselves that are useful and beliefs that aren't.  Some of our beliefs about ourselves match our wiring and some don't.

I was once doing a reading for a client.  I described his career from four different angles.  Normally, when looking at the career patterns from four different angles, I usually see different career possibilities.   For example, from the Sun's perspective, the career might look like a musician.  From the Moon, it might look like an architect.  And from the Ascendant, it might look like a cook. Usually, people have a variety of talents and interests and these are all reflected in the chart.  However, this man's chart was different.  From every angle, his chart looked like a teacher's chart.  I said, "From all four lagnas your career looks like teaching.  What do you do for a living?"  He said, " I am a doctor."

I was very surprised, and a little taken aback.  I thought to myself,  "What did I miss?  Did I get this wrong?"  I searched the chart frantically to find some evidence of a healer, but found nothing.  Again, I thought, "He's not going to like what I am about to say.  Doctors are high up on the totem pole in terms of respect and status, while teachers are not given enough respect, status, or financial validation."  I pulled myself together and decided to stick with the chart, in spite of his story about himself.  I said, "You're not happy as a doctor!"  I braced myself in case this statement caused him to disagree.  Instead, he said, "You're right, my mother and father wanted me to become a doctor.  I have never really liked medicine.  I have always wanted to be a teacher!"  Interestingly, a few years later, he retired from medicine and became a teacher.

The chart shows how you are wired, emotionally, mentally, professionally, physically, and spiritually.   If you are paying attention internally, and are being honest with yourself, you will follow your desires along the lines indicated in your horoscope.  That direction is a sure path leading to self actualization, and even to self realization.   But not everyone is clear about who they are or even what they really want.

We all receive programming from our family, religion, national culture, and media.  In the case of the doctor, he allowed his parental programming to dominate, producing a story about him being a doctor.  That story wasn't even based on his own desires, but the desires of his parents.  And it led him down a path that was not in line with his true wiring, and therefore, not in line with being happy with his life.

The great teacher, Anthony de Mello, used to like to tell stories.  On this subject of erroneous beliefs, he told the following story:

There was once a Lion who was an orphan.  Somehow, as a cub, he grew up with a herd of sheep.  As he grew up, he imprinted on the herd and believed himself to be just like them, a sheep.

One day while the herd was grazing, another lion came into the clearing.  He saw the first lion with the herd of sheep, so he ran over to him.  Of course, all of the sheep ran away as fast as possible.  When the new lion reached the first lion, he said,  "What are you doing?  You don't belong with a herd of sheep."  The first lion said, "Of course I do, after all, I am a sheep myself."   The second lion said, "Come with me."  So they both trotted off into the forest.  When they reached a stream, the second lion found a calm part of the stream and said, "Look at yourself in the water." They both looked at their reflections in the water.  He said, "You are just like me, a lion. You are not a sheep!"  It only took the first lion a moment to realize his true nature, and that realization changed his life.  (For more about Anthony de Mello, google him on You Tube)

On the practical level, the horoscope is one of the most powerful tools for revealing your wiring, and that gives you insight into your true nature.  It allows you to step outside of yourself and see yourself  in symbol.  Like the lion, seeing his own reflection in the water, it only takes an instant to realize what is real.  Once you get it, everything changes, including your story.

But if that all seems too deep and too heavy, then, as they say down under, "No worries mate!"  Just roll over and go back to sleep.  There is no rule that says you have to be true to yourself.  It's usually a lot more enjoyable, but there is really no rule. You can just adopt the philosophy of Ashleigh Brilliant, the noted philosopher and scholar  who said,  "I have abandoned up my search for truth, and am now looking for a good fantasy!"

Astrology in the Sierras 2015
Remedies,  Financial Astrology, and Prashna

It's not too late, there are still a couple of spots open for this class.

Join us in Nevada City, CA for this six day California Sierras Jyotish intensive.

This intensive is in three parts.

Part 1 will focus on the areas of finances and career.  In the process, you will become more grounded in the fundamentals of chart analysis, as well as the use of dasha and transit techniques for prediction.  The area of Artha (the material aspect of life) is an important part of life.  These areas of life can be the source of great distress and confusion for many people, especially in our current economic climate.  Even if you are a yogi, who never thinks about money or career, you will want to take this class.  We will go much deeper than simply analyzing the chart in a mechanical way.  We will get to the core of the chart and understand the dharmic aspect of this desire.

Part 2 will focus on remedial measures.  I will be showing you how to use gemstones, mantras, yagyas, donations, fasting and other remedial techniques.  In addition, I will show you how to bring these practices out of the realm of superstition and use them in a manner that actually makes a connection for both you and your clients.  The goal of this aspect of the class is to help each student develop more confidence when recommending remedies, while at the same time, learning to apply remedial techniques  in a way that harmonizes with each individual client as well as with modern life.

As with all of my classes, the orientation of this class is towards doing actual readings.   My philosophy of teaching is that you learn astrology by doing astrology, not by talking about astrology.  The Sierra mountains will provide an excellent environment for a total-immersion experience in this ancient art.

Part 3.  Along the way we will explore some of the elements of Prashna, the astrology of asking questions.  I will show you how to use the question chart, in order to make interesting predictions and get deeper insights.
