Jupiter Moves into Leo

On July 13, 2015, Jupiter moves into Leo.  Jupiter's annual change of signs is a big deal in astrology, since it opens up a whole new area of life that will benefit from Jupiter's beneficence for the next year.  Jupiter is the king of the beneficial planets.  It signifies knowledge, abundance, truth, dharma, and all round expansive, supportive energy.   When Jupiter gets going in a sign, that sign, and the house it occupies in your horoscope, thrives.

Here is an interpretation of Jupiter's effect on your life during its transit of Leo.  Make sure you look at the birth dates that correspond to the Vedic sun signs carefully, since the zodiac in Vedic astrology is different from that of Western astrology.  If you happen to know your Moon sign, ascendant sign or your arudha lagna sign, you can read the interpretations given for those signs as well.

April 13- May 13  (Aries)  Jupiter is passing through your fifth house.  This is good for everything related to children, education, and romance.  It is also a period that expands your creative energy.

May 14 - June 13 (Taurus)   During this period you might change your residence, or simply spend some money to remodel or improve it.  This period also supports your mother, education, and general happiness.

June 14 - July 15 (Gemini)   During this period you might travel. This is also a good time for education.  Jupiter is passing through your third house, so it supports the whole area of communication.  This period might also produce a relationship, if you aren't already in one.  Otherwise, it might improve your current relationship.

July 16 - August 15  (Cancer)   This period favors finances.  You might find that, by the end of Jupiter's transit in Leo, you will have made more money than in the previous year.   You will probably find this to be a supportive period for your work as well.    Your relationship with family members could improve.   This period can also be good for improving your health.

August 16 - September 15  (Leo)  This period will be very upbeat.  It should be good for your career, but it could include other expansive events such as travel, financial gains, or just about anything positive and exciting.

September 16 - October 15 (Virgo)   During this year, you have a window of opportunity for travel.  Distant places and foreign countries will be a source of positive support, so if you travel, invest, or simply have contact with people from distant places, you will probably benefit.  This is also a great time for meditation, introspection and reflection, since Jupiter is passing through the main house of spirituality.

October 16 -November 14  (Libra)  Jupiter is now passing through your eleventh house.  This is the house of actualizing and materializing your desires.  During this year, you could finish projects, make more money, or simply acquire important (or not so important) things that you have always wanted.  During this period, your social circle could expand, and this is a good period for romantic relationships.

November 15 - December 14  (Scorpio)    Jupiter is transiting your tenth house, the house of career or action.  This will be a good period for your work or profession, giving you an extra dose of creative energy in the form of new ideas, projects, and general support.  This period also supports and expands finances and health.

December 15 - January 12  (Sagittarius)  During this year, Jupiter will be passing through your ninth house.  This could produce long distance travel, and it is also a great time for getting an education.  This is also a good period for finances.

January 13 - February 11  (Capricorn)  This period is good for your partner's money, or for your own ability to derive financial gain from partnerships, clients, contracts, business, insurance, inheritance or investments.  This is also a great time for yoga or any other type of transformational therapy.

February 12 - March 13  (Aquarius)  Jupiter is passing through your seventh house, the house of relationship, marriage, and partnership.  During this period you can benefit from your interactions with people and will tend to create alliances.  If you looking for a relationship or partnership, this period looks promising.

March 14 - April 12   (Pisces)  During this period you will probably experience support in your career area, since Jupiter is transiting your sixth house.   You might experience financial increase during this period.    It is likely that your health will improve as well.

Swami Sivananda Murty

On June 10th, Sadguru Sivananda Murty dropped his body in India. If you have been reading this newsletter for the past several years, you will remember that I have written about him frequently, and told many stories about interesting encounters that I have had with him.  He was one of India's greatest contemporary teachers and was an authentic exponent of Vedic knowledge.

I visited him in India in February, when he was nearing the end.  In spite of being in a very weak condition, he made time each day to see me for a few hours.  Even though his body was failing, his mind was bright and alert and he continued to laugh and joke.  He seemed indifferent to his discomfort, and totally unafraid of the failure of his body.

Here is a short story  that I wrote about Sivananda Murty in my Book, Path of Light.

I have always contended that the best form of astrology is that which is practiced by an enlightened astrologer, one for whom the subtle energy channels called nadis have opened.  For this kind of astrologer, the chart becomes unnecessary and astrology becomes an entirely internal matter.   My friend and spiritual teacher Swami Sivananda Murty is such an astrologer.  He studied astrology deeply in his teenage years and gained a reputation in his twenties and thirties as an outstanding astrologer.   He practiced astrology as a form of service, not as a profession. Somewhere in his forties, after many years of meditating six hours a day, he became self-realized.  After that, he gave up the practice of formal astrology.

Swamiji always enjoys talking about astrology, however, and when I visit his ashram, he usually turns the conversation towards astrological topics.  On one occasion, we were walking in the garden in front of his house.  He lives in a simple, but beautiful house, in a small fishing village on the east coast of India.  It was a warm, starry night and we had just come back from the evening meditation in the Ganesha Temple.  Swamiji looked up into the sky and said, "There is Jupiter in Revati. Look there. You will see the constellation of Purvabhadra.  Over here in the shape of a cart is Rohini."  He effortlessly navigated the constellations giving anecdotes and astrological commentary as he went, displaying an observational astronomical prowess that is possessed by very few astrologers.

Swamiji has always encouraged me in my practice of astrology, saying that astrology is a form of sadhana.  "Astrology is better for the astrologer than it is for the client," he says frequently. After many years of practice, combined with regular meditation, the astrologer no longer needs the horoscope, due to an awakening of the internal astrological nadis.

It is from this angle that I relate the following story told to me by a devotee of Swamiji.  I had been talking to Swamiji one afternoon in his home.  As usual, the discussion spanned a wide range of subjects.  At one point, Swamiji mentioned a trip that he had taken recently to Scotland and that he had many devotees in Scotland.  Immediately my curiosity was peaked.  "Scotland?" I thought.  "Why Scotland?"  I have nothing against Scotland, in fact I think it is a very attractive country, but I had never heard of any big proliferation of Vedic culture, yoga, meditation or even New Age spirituality there.  Maybe I am simply ignorant, but I simply was curious how an Indian spiritual teacher was well received in Scotland.

After the conversation was over, I cornered Swamiji's assistant and asked, "How is it that Swami Sivananda Murty has such a big following in Scotland?"  He told me that many years ago, Swamiji had a lady disciple here in India.  She once asked him if she would have any children and he predicted that in a certain month and year she would have a baby girl.  He told her that this girl would grow up to be healthy and happy and live a long productive life.

A few years later, the lady and her husband moved to Scotland.   While they were there, the child was born exactly at the time predicted by Swamiji.   When the child was three years old, however, she suddenly became seriously ill.  The mother rushed her to the hospital, where she died on the emergency room table.  The mother was completely confused and upset and immediately got on the phone to India.  "Swamiji," she said, "my daughter has died on the emergency room table.  You told me that she would live a long, happy life. How can this be?"  In a gentle voice, Swamiji said, "The girl is not dead!"   "But Swamiji," the mother said, "she has just been pronounced dead by the attending doctor.  She is dead!"  Again in a calm voice Swami Sivananda Murty said, "Get a second opinion!"

The mother was frantic.  Who could she ask?  It was the middle of the night and no other physicians were in sight.  She rushed down the hall of the hospital, going from room to room until she found a cardiologist.  She begged the doctor to look at her child and give a second opinion.  The cardiologist examined the child and told the mother that the girl was indeed dead.  She begged him to do something, anything to revive her daughter. At this point nearly twenty minutes had gone by.  Out of sympathy for the mother, the doctor agreed to open the chest of the girl and examine the heart.  He told her that this would not bring the girl back, but might at least provide some information about the condition of the heart.  The mother agreed and the doctor cut open the girl's chest, exposing the heart.  Immediately, the heart began to beat again.  The girl recovered fully, in spite of being clinically dead for twenty minutes.

Since the writing of that article, I met that girl, during one of my visits to India. She was visiting Sivananda Murty at the same time that I was also there.  She confirmed for me that the story was correct.  She is now a practicing physician in Scotland.

In any case, Sivananda Murty was a great light in the lives of many people.  He will be missed.

Astrology in the Sierras 2015
Remedies,  Financial Astrology, and Prashna

Tick Tick,  Time is short.  If you want to join this class you need to let me know right away.

Join us in Nevada City, CA for this six day California Sierras Jyotish intensive.

This intensive is in three parts.

Part 1 will focus on the areas of finances and career.  In the process, you will become more grounded in the fundamentals of chart analysis, as well as the use of dasha and transit techniques for prediction.  The area of Artha (the material aspect of life) is an important part of life.  These areas of life can be the source of great distress and confusion for many people, especially in our current economic climate.  Even if you are a yogi, who never thinks about money or career, you will want to take this class.  We will go much deeper than simply analyzing the chart in a mechanical way.  We will get to the core of the chart and understand the dharmic aspect of this desire.

Part 2 will focus on remedial measures.  I will be showing you how to use gemstones, mantras, yagyas, donations, fasting and other remedial techniques.  In addition, I will show you how to bring these practices out of the realm of superstition and use them in a manner that actually makes a connection for both you and your clients.  The goal of this aspect of the class is to help each student develop more confidence when recommending remedies, while at the same time, learning to apply remedial techniques  in a way that harmonizes with each individual client as well as with modern life.

As with all of my classes, the orientation of this class is towards doing actual readings.   My philosophy of teaching is that you learn astrology by doing astrology, not by talking about astrology.  The Sierra mountains will provide an excellent environment for a total-immersion experience in this ancient art.

Part 3.  Along the way we will explore some of the elements of Prashna, the astrology of asking questions.  I will show you how to use the question chart, in order to make interesting predictions and get deeper insights.
