May, 2015
Scattered Thunder Storms Ahead
The Mars/Saturn Opposition

May is here.  Spring has come.  The birds are chirping, but in the sky, trouble is brewing as Mars and Saturn get ready to oppose each other for about 40 days.

On May 4, 2015, Mars enters Taurus, the sign opposite transiting Saturn.  On May 15, the opposition between these two first-rate malefic planets becomes exact.   After that the effects of the opposition will still be in effect, but diminishing until June 10th.

On one level, Mars represents the desire to go forward with no restriction.  Saturn represents delays and obstacles.  So from this perspective, the period can produce frustration.  It is what I call the Rush Hour Traffic Combination. During this period, if you find yourself becoming frustrated with some aspect of life, or with a project you are working on, or with a person in your life, relax.

Remember, there are two types of people who go out in rush hour traffic.  First, there is the guy who doesn't know that is rush hour.  He thinks he is going to get across town in 10 minutes going 60 miles an hour.  When he gets stuck behind bumper to bumper traffic, he has a conniption fit.  If you don't know what a conniption fit is, neither do I.  It was one of my mother's favorite expressions, and while I don't exactly know what it is, I think it must look sort of like road rage.  That driver arrives at his destination with a head ache and in a bad mood.    The second type of driver has a radio.  He checks the traffic report and he knows in advance that the traffic is backed up.   He takes a CD with him to play in the car.  He drives  slowly, lets other people cut in, and smiles at the other drivers.  He arrives at his destination at exactly the same time as the other driver, but he feels great and he is in a good mood.

The moral of the story is simply that sometimes obstacles and obstructions are just unavoidable, but our reaction to obstructions is another matter. Suffering, as they say,  is optional.

On the global level, when Mars and Saturn oppose each other, frustration tends to build up world wide.  Frustration is the basis of anger.  When people don't get what they want, when they want it,
they tend to get angry.  So this astrological combination is traditionally related to military conflicts and other types of violence.

To get an Idea how this Mars-Saturn oppositions look in real life, lets take a look at the events that correspond to every opposition of Mars and Saturn in the last twelve years.

February 2003  - The conjunction was exact on February 20th.  On February 15, 10 million people world wide protested the US intention to begin the Iraq war.  The Iraq war began in March.

March 2005 - The Pakistani army opened fire on insurgents one day after the exact conjunction.   The Chinese also passed an anti succession law at this time which lead to mass demonstrations by residents of Taiwan.  A number of other bombings, explosions and disasters occurred during this month as well.

March 2007 -  March 23rd, one day after the exact conjunction, naval forces of Iran's Revolutionary Guard seize Royal Navy personnel in disputed Iran-Iraq waters.

April 2009 -  April 5,  one day after the exact conjunction,    North Korea launched a rocket from its Tonghae Satellite Launching Ground, which  it claimed was carrying a satellite.  This prompted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

April/May, 2011 -  Osama Bin Laden was Killed on May 2nd,  the last day of the opposition.

April/May 2013  On May 15th, at the very beginning of the conjunction, the Boston Marathon Bombing took place.  The collapse of an eight story building in Bangladesh which killed 1,129 people also took place during this period.  This was the third worst industrial disaster in history.

One can't help but notice that the 2003 opposition and the 2013 opposition of Mars and Saturn produced more dramatic results than the others.  This is because those oppositions occurred while Saturn was in a conjunction with Rahu, a conjunction that I wrote about extensively in the past several years.   Those years were particularly volatile and prone to create bigger events.

Mars opposes Saturn every other year, and not all oppositions are alike.  In the case of the current opposition, Mars will be transiting Krittika nakshatra at the time of its exact aspect on Saturn. Krittika is a nakshatra related to warfare.   Agni, deified fire, who rules Krittika, once got a crush on the seven wives of seven saints.  He succeeded in seducing six out of the seven ladies, and they collectively gave birth to the god of War, Kartikeya.  So this opposition does suggest military flare ups as well as violent and incendiary events in general.

On the positive side, Krittika is a technical nakshatra, as is the Mars-Saturn opposition, so this period favors technical activities.

All of that said, personally, I am going to try to relax, keep a low profile, and I might go on a back packing trip in the Sierras during the conjunction.  What I am not going to do is worry about it.

Earthquake in Nepal

On April 25th, the world was shocked by a devastating 7.8 earthquake in Nepal.  Events like this make us wonder about the astrological factors that were in play at the time.

Before I talk about the earthquake, however,  it is interesting to note that this isn't the only disaster to affect Nepal in recent times.  On June 1st, 2001, the King and the Queen of Nepal, along with two other members of the family were murdered by the king's son, Prince Direndra, who then committed suicide.

This event took place during a Ketu/Saturn period in the old Nepalese chart.  Ketu and Saturn can sometimes give very difficult results in a person's life.   In the Kalam Ritam, a text written by Kalidasa, a poet-saint who lived about 1000 years ago, it says that during the Ketu/Saturn period "all properties will be in danger of ruin.  The native will suffer heavy losses in different ways".   In other words, Ketu/Saturn can be a very difficult period.

Of course, the final analysis of the planetary period is left up to the astrologer, but in this case, transiting Ketu, the major period ruler, was also in a conjunction with Mars, the planet of aggression and violence.  I call this conjunction, the terrorist conjunction.   During  2001, Ketu and Mars conjuncted twice.  The first time occurred very close to the day of the murder of the Nepalese royal family.  Mars transited very close to Ketu at that time, and then it turned retrograde, just before the conjunction was complete.  Retrograde Mars can aggravate the tendency towards violence.  The second conjunction took place on September 14th, just three days after the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster.  A complete conjunction of these two planets generally can produce specific events 4 days on either side of the conjunction date, which covers the 9/11 event exactly.

In the case of Nepal, the conjunction of transiting Mars and Ketu took place on their Arudha lagna, a sign in the chart that is associated with the public image of the country. In the case of  the 9/11 disaster, the Mars/Ketu conjunction took place exactly on the ascendant of the USA horoscope.  The conjunction was happening for the whole world, but it was hitting these two countries in particular.

Countries, like people, have horoscopes.  The current Nepalese chart is based on the time when the Maoist-Communists took over the country, abolishing the Kingdom.  It is interesting that, in true Maoist form, the communists took over at the time of a Mars/Ketu conjunction.  Obviously, they saw no reason to use an astrologer to set a good time to begin their regime.

As a matter of fact, the Mars/Ketu conjunction in the Nepalese chart is one of several symbols which point to earthquakes in the current chart.  Another is Saturn, placed in the eighth house, the house of earthquakes.  At the time of the Earthquake, Transiting Saturn, was exactly opposite Venus, the ruler of the current sub period, triggering the event.  The sign period of Leo (the sign in the 8th house-earthquakes) was also activated at that time.

Could this disaster have been avoided by setting a good time to start the regime?  Probably not, planets do not cause events in our lives, they simply symbolize the rising of our individual or collective karma.  Events like earthquakes are bound to happen from time to time.   Setting a good time to start a country or a ruling party can help however.

A case in point is seen in the cases of India and Pakistan.  The British were planning to give them both independence on the same day.   However, Nehru called up the noted Vedic astrologer, B.V. Raman and asked him if that date and time was a good time to begin.  Dr. Raman said no, and suggested that the date for independence ceremony for India be postponed by one day.  This, along with the difference in the location of the two capital cities, made a world of difference in the two countries.  India is now coming forward as one of the most powerful economic forces in the world, and Pakistan is a failed state with nuclear bombs.  What a difference a day makes!

For Nepal as well, the horoscope makes a huge difference.  The chart for the current regime reflects a tendency to experience conflict, unrest, and  geological changes.  While the solution to the immediate crisis is simply hard work and patience, in the process of getting the country back on its feet, there is also a more esoteric solution.  As an astrologer,  I would suggest a solution that might bring more improvement over the long term.  To some people this solution might seem radical, unrealistic, or unscientific.  Nevertheless, here it is.  The Nepalese should elect a new government with a new ruling party.   That will give them a new horoscope.  This time, however,   they should use a good astrologer to set the time to begin.

Astrology in the Sierras 2015
Upaya and Artha

Deposit Deadline - June 1st

Join us in Nevada City, CA for this six day California Sierras Jyotish intensive.

This intensive is in two parts.

Part 1 will focus on the areas of finances and career.  In the process, you will become more grounded in the fundamentals of chart analysis, as well as the use of dasha and transit techniques for prediction.  The area of Artha (the material aspect of life) is an important part of life.  These areas of life can be the source of great distress and confusion for many people, especially in our current economic climate.  Even if you are a yogi, who never thinks about money or career, you will want to take this class.  We will go much deeper than simply analyzing the chart in a mechanical way.  We will get to the core of the chart and understand the dharmic aspect of this desire.

Part 2 will focus on remedial measures.  I will be showing you how to use gemstones, mantras, yagyas, donations, fasting and other remedial techniques.  In addition, I will show you how to bring these practices out of the realm of superstition and use them in a manner that actually makes a connection for both you and your clients.  The goal of this aspect of the class is to help each student develop more confidence when recommending remedies, while at the same time, learning to apply remedial techniques  in a way that harmonizes with each individual client as well as with modern life.

As with all of my classes, the orientation of this class is towards doing actual readings.   My philosophy of teaching is that you learn astrology by doing astrology, not by talking about astrology.  The Sierra mountains will provide an excellent environment for a total-immersion experience in this ancient art.
