February, 2015
Mercury In Capricorn

February begins with Mercury retrograding in Capricorn.  Unlike many Mercury retrograde periods, this one is quite positive.  Mercury is receiving an aspect from Jupiter and a benign aspect from Saturn, making the period ideal for a variety of things.

First, like most Mercury retro periods, this is a good time for fixing, changing, editing, refining and perfecting things.  Mercury represents information, so this applies especially to information oriented activities like writing or communicating.

On February 11th, Mercury turns direct and will begin to produce a particularly positive effect as it moves through Capricorn.  This is very good for communications in general, but the specific result will depend on its exact location in your horoscope.

On March 1st, Mercury will move into exact opposition with Jupiter.  This can produce particularly expansive and positive events in some areas of life, during the period for about three days on either side of that date.  It increases the quantity and the quality of communications in general.  It's good for business, education, writing, travel and a variety of undertakings.

Although I can't see your individual horoscope, it is possible to make some general predictions based on the position of the Sun in your chart.  Your Vedic Sun sign is based on a sidereal zodiac, however, so be sure to look carefully at the birth dates given below for the Sun Signs.    These predictions only apply to the month of February and the first eight days of March.  If you happen to know your Vedic Moon Sign, Ascendant, or even your Arudha Lagna, then you can read the results given for those signs as well.

April 13- May 13  (Aries)   This month is good for your profession, especially for your ability to use your communication skills in an effective way.  Look for an extra surge of positive communications at work around  March 1st..

May 14 - June 13 (Taurus)   This month is great for travel, finances,  education, children and just about everything else.  Look for positive events in one or more of these areas during the last few days of February and the first couple of days of March.

June 14 - July 15 (Gemini)  This month may produce positive changes or improvements in general.  This is a good time for personal transformation,  improving your health,  making positive changes or improvements to your residence,  balancing or auditing joint finances, any kind of joint financial events, and business in general.   Around the 1st of March you might experience a surge of positive events related to money,  family or food.

July 16 - August 15  (Cancer)  February is a relationship month.  Mercury is contributing charm and warmth to the way you communicate, allowing various types of relationships to go smoothly. This is also a great month for travel, education, and spiritual pursuits.  Watch the period around March 1st for a boost in good communications and positive social interaction.

August 16 - September 15  (Leo)   This month is a great time for making progress with your health, especially through what you read or through the information you collect in the process of communicating with your friends.  It's also a fantastic time to begin or to reinforce an aerobic exercise routine through running, walking, hiking or biking. This period is also good for your finances and your employment, making you particularly efficient and effective at your work.   Look for positive events related to health, money, or travel a few days on either side of March 1st.

September 16 - October 15 (Virgo)  This month is good for your work. It promotes your ability to teach or mentor others.  It is great for writing and also for any educational activity. This period can also bring positive events related to groups of people, organizations, or friends.  You might also attend public events or just find yourself out doing things in places where large crowds of people collect.  Look for more pronounced events of these types near  March 1, give or take three days.

October 16 -November 14  (Libra)  This period is good for anything related to your home or for real estate in general.  It's also good for education,  whether it's  teaching or learning.    February is also a great month for travelling.   It promotes your career as well.  Look for a boost with the afore-mentioned types of events around March 1st.

November 15 - December 14  (Scorpio)   During the month of February, you will find that the communications process goes better than usual.  You will probably have positive interactions with your friends.  This period is good for travel and also for education.  This energy is strongest at the end of the month and peaks on March 1st.

December 15 - January 12  (Sagittarius)   This month may bring improvements with money.  On the other hand, it could also just cause you to spend money on a variety of things.  You will probably find that any communications you have with your spouse or partner will go smoothly during February.   You might put your attention on balancing your finances and this could include prioritizing your expenditures.  This is also a good time for experiences with family members and it is also good for your work.  Watch March 1st for a boost of positive energy in any of these areas.

January 13 - February 11  (Capricorn)This is a great time for travel.  It also promotes your work.  You will probably find that the communications process is going quite well during this period, especially with your spouse or partner.  There could be positive social events, or positive events related to partnership, bubbling up more around the end of the month and near March 1st.

February 12 - March 13  (Aquarius)  This is a great time for travel and a great time for any spiritual practice such as meditation or introspection.  This period also may bring activities that are good for your health, like walking or running.  This is a good time for your children,  especially if you have children that live in a distant place.  This period also favors your Job.  These types of events intensify and become more likely at the end of the month and around March 1st.

March 14 - April 12   (Pisces)   During February, you might notice the tendency to become more social.  This is a great period for connecting with your friends.  Similarly, it is a great time for taking a class and connecting with people in the process.  It favors finances,  home, partnership, and relationships, intensifying near the end of the month and becoming most intense on March 1st.

The Road to Nadi

India always seems to draw me back.  Just when I think I am done with traveling, I get the bug again and return for a new adventure.  And each time I return, I seem to immediately gravitate towards all things astrological. Two nights ago it was dinner with three highly respected Delhi Astrologers, Dr. K.S. Charak, Vinay Aditya, and J.N. Sharma.  Yesterday, it was a trip to a Nadi Astrologer.

Yes, yes, I know, some of you already think that I am a very "naughty" Astrologer.   I am actually talking about a different type of astrologer, called a Nadi astrologer, who starts by taking your thumb print, and then finds an ancient palm leaf on which detailed predictions have been written about you.  In a recent newsletter I also wrote about Nadi astrology, but there are various types, and each is a unique experience.  The one I wrote about previously does a similar type of reading, using a palm leaf, but his method of finding the leaf is completely different.   The style that we were trying yesterday uses your thumb print to locate the correct palm leaf.  This method, called Siva Nadi, has always intrigued me, so whenever an opportunity to check it out arises, I go for it.  So far I have not been successful.

Anyway, yesterday, RajivTomar, my host in Delhi,  and I went to see a Siva Nadi astrologer.  His assistant took my thumb print, and told us that he would call us in a couple of hours if he could find a "bundle".  The way it works is that each thumb print has certain characteristics, which gives the astrologer the information he needs to find the bundle of leafs that are likely to contain the specific leaf that contains the reading.   I gave him the thumb print, and then returned to Rajiv's house.  A few hours later,  Rajiv received a call from the astrologer.  As he hung up he said, "They have your bundle".    "Great", I said, "Shall we go back and see if they can find the leaf?"   "Okay", Rajiv said, "We should at least give it a try."

Finding the bundle is actually the easy part of the process with Siva Nadi.  The hard part is to locate the actual leaf.  It's simply trial and error at first.  In this case the astrologer entered the room with a bundle of palm leaves in his hand, sat down, unwrapped the bundle, and took out one of the leaves. He put on his glasses, looked carefully at the ancient Tamil Script, began to read in Tamil, and then changed to English and said, " Your name is George."  "No", I replied.   "Then this is not the correct leaf", he said.

The astrologer had previously explained that the process of finding the leaf was a simple matter of reading what it says, and then verifying that each and every statement is exactly correct.  If you have the correct leaf, then it will give the name of your mother, father, sisters, brothers, and dozens of specific details about your life.  If they are all exactly correct, then you have the right leaf, and your can go on with the rest of the reading and predictions.  "Let's go on to the next one." He said.   "Your Mother is alive and your father is dead".   "No" I said. He pulled out the next leaf.  "You are an astrologer." He said.  "Yes", I perked up.  He continued, "You're mother's name is Mary.  "Yes! I said, getting a little excited.  "Your name is John",  he said.  "No", I said.

Now you might think that John and James are pretty close, and you are right.  If this were a psychic  reading or a normal astrology reading, I would have given him a pass. But with Siva Nadi, each and every detail has to be accurate or the reading doesn't work.  There are plenty of con men who have become experts in bluffing their way through these readings and extracting large fees from their gullible clients.    In fact, probably 90 per cent of the guys doing Nadi readings in India are fakes.  But Nadi astrology is an ancient and respected divination system,  and there are still a few authentic practitioners left in India.

Just finding a Nadi reader who is not a con artist doesn't assure you of finding the correct palm leaf, however.  In this case I was going on the advice of Rajiv Tomar, my partner who hosts my India trips and makes all the ground connections.  Rajiv has taken dozens of people to see this particular Nadi Reader, and, although he said that most people could not find their leaf, there were several who did find it, with astounding results, including very detailed and accurate predictions.  Since there is probably nobody in India who has as much experience with seeing many different Nadi astrologers do multiple readings than Rajiv, I took the chance and spent the next half hour going through the rest of the leaves in that bundle.  After that we went on to a second bundle, continuing to look for my leaf, but none of the leaves matched completely.

"I'm sorry you weren't able to find your palm leaf," Rajiv said, as we left the astrologers office.  "No problem,"  I said, "I am in no rush. The search is part of the fun."   "And besides, this was a particularly good day." I said.  "Why is that," Rajiv asked with a curious look on his face.  "Because it's not every day that you get to "turn over a new leaf!"  I said.  Rajiv just groaned, and gave me a token polite laugh.

Astrology in the Sierras 2015
Upaya and Artha

Join us in Nevada City, CA for this six day California Sierras Jyotish intensive.

This intensive is in two parts.  Part 1  will focus on the areas of finances and career.  In the process, you will become more grounded in the fundamentals of chart analysis, as well as the use of dasha and transit techniques for prediction.  The area of Artha (the material aspect of life) is an important part of life.  These areas of life can be the source of great distress and confusion for many people, especially in our current economic climate.  Even if you are a yogi, who never thinks about money or career, you will want to take this class.  We will go much deeper than simply analyzing the chart in a mechanical way.  We will get to the core of the chart and understand the dharmic aspect of this desire.

Part 2 will focus on remedial measures:   I will be showing you how to use gemstones, mantras, yagyas, donations, fasting and other remedial techniques.  In addition, I will show you how to bring these practices out of the realm of superstition and use them in a manner that actually makes a connection for both you and your clients.  The goal of this aspect of the class is to help each student develop more confidence when recommending remedies, while at the same time, learning to apply remedial techniques  in a way that harmonizes with each individual client as well as with modern life.

As with all of my classes, the orientation of this class is towards doing actual readings.   My philosophy of teaching is that you learn astrology by doing astrology, not by talking about astrology.  The Sierra mountains will provide an excellent environment for a total-immersion experience in this ancient art.
