Mars and Rahu

Mars enters Aquarius on the 4th of January. It will stay there until February 12th.   This transit may create an aggravating effect on world politics, especially anything related to terrorist activity. The rise of fundamentalist Islamic terrorist groups is related to Rahu, in astrology. Rahu has been transiting in the Sign of Virgo (warfare). Rahu entered Virgo on the 13th of July, one day before the leader of ISIL broadcast a video on the international stage announcing his intention to wage war on the rest of the non-ISIL world.

 

Now that Mars is in Aquarius, it is casting an agitating influence on Rahu, making it more probable that violent and unexpected events will flare up in January or Early February.   On January 27th, Rahu's aspect on Mars becomes exact, making the period for about a week, on either side of that day, much more prone to acts of terrorism in general.

 

For individuals, the effect of this transit really depends on the particular placements of planets in your chart. In general, this is a time to simply take it easy. It is prone to flare ups of anger, and it is somewhat accident prone. So just go slowly. And yes, it is a good idea to cancel your appointment to go sky diving at that time.

The Many Names Of ISIS
 

I never cease to be amazed at how the myths and symbols of Vedic astrology play out in the lives of people. The zodiac is divided into 12 signs, but it is also divided into smaller constellations called Nakshatras. Each of the nakshatras is ruled by a deity. The deity usually has various myths and symbols about it that are written in the Puranas, the ancient mythology of India. Those stories often play out in a detailed way in the person's life.  

 

A great example of this is the chart of ISIS, the Islamic terrorist organization that is wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria. Of course, this is not the chart of an individual, it is the chart of a terrorist organization. Nevertheless, based on the time, date and place that they declared their Islamic Caliphate, ISIS has a chart, so the same astrological principals apply.

 

I am not going to go into much depth here because I will be giving a talk on world events in January and may go more deeply into the chart at that time. But I simply want to point out one very interesting feature. The ISIS chart has a Gemini Ascendant, with Ardra nakshatra on the ascendant. Ardra is ruled by Rudra, the wrathful form of Siva. Seems appropriate, right?   There is actually a story about Rudra, from the Puranas, that says that when Rudra was born, he cried. His father, Lord Brahma said, "Why are you crying?" Rudra said, "Because I don't have a name". So his father said, "Then I will call you Rudra," which means, to cry.   But then he went on to give Rudra seven other names.  

 

So Ardra nakshatra is a nakshatra that is associated with the search for identity, especially through finding a name. It is common for people with this nakshatra on the ascendant to change their name at some point. Recently, I talked to the mother of a small child with Ardra Nakshatra on the ascendant. She said that one day her child had simply announced that he was changing his name. Later on he changed it a couple of more times as well.  

 

It is interesting that ISIS has a similar identity crisis. When it first hit the news there were several names floating around. The media couldn't figure out what to call it.   So far it has had the names ISIS, ISIL, IS, SiC, and Da'ish.   Well, it's not exactly 8 names, but it's close enough. I wonder how the members of ISIS, a hard-core fundamentalist Islamic terrorist group made up of thousands of aggressive and violent men, would react if they knew that their identity crisis was somehow related to a Hindu god? Not well, I suspect.  I wonder what name will they choose next?

Mercury Retrograde 
 

Mercury will be retrograde from January 22nd to February 12, 2015.   It will be doing much of it's retrograde motion in Shravana Nakshatra, a nakshatra that promotes the ability to connect diverse elements. This is a good time to review all matters that rely on diversification, or that draw from diverse sources for support. This is also a good time to reset your priorities and think deeply about what is really important in your life.

 

The retrograde phase of Mercury is not the best time to sign new agreements or contracts, or to start new endeavors that rely heavily on language. On the other hand, it is a good time for reflecting on matters from the past, returning to places you have been before, and for generally turning inward.

Join us in Nevada City, CA for this six day California Sierras Jyotish intensive. 

This intensive is in two parts.  Part 1  will focus on the areas of finances and career.  In the process, you will become more grounded in the fundamentals of chart analysis, as well as the use of dasha and transit techniques for prediction.  The area of Artha (the material aspect of life) is an important part of life.  These areas of life can be the source of great distress and confusion for many people, especially in our current economic climate.  Even if you are a yogi, who never thinks about money or career, you will want to take this class.  We will go much deeper than simply analyzing the chart in a mechanical way.  We will get to the core of the chart and understand the dharmic aspect of this desire.  
 

Part 2 will focus on remedial measures:   I will be showing you how to use gemstones, mantras, yagyas, donations, fasting and other remedial techniques.  In addition, I will show you how to bring these practices out of the realm of superstition and use them in a manner that actually makes a connection for both you and your clients.  The goal of this aspect of the class is to help each student develop more confidence when recommending remedies, while at the same time, learning to apply remedial techniques  in a way that harmonizes with each individual client as well as with modern life.
  

As with all of my classes, the orientation of this class is towards doing actual readings.   My philosophy of teaching is that you learn astrology by doing astrology, not by talking about astrology.  The Sierra mountains will provide an excellent environment for a total-immersion experience in this ancient art.
