Celebrating our Schools This Spring!
Dear City of Fairfax Community Members,
 
As we fast approach the end of the school year, this month's CloseUp highlights a number of achievements of students and staff at our four schools. Not everyone gets the opportunity to spend time in the schools, but by reading the articles below, you can take a mini-visit and learn about some of the amazing things that transpire. The last link connects to a video about the Fairfax Cares event, which was a testament to not only school administrators, staff, and students but also to our entire community which came together to pack over 13,000 meals for children in need. We are so proud of everyone who work so hard to achieve and to contribute.

Congratulations Fairfax High School for being recognized by U .S. News and World Report as being one of the top high schools in the state! FHS was ranked #20 in the state, making it in the top 6% of all high schools in Virginia.

Congratulations to our trailblazer, Chris Johnston, instructor of our Music & Computer Technology class, for being selected as a Quarterfinalist for the 2017 Grammy Music Educator Award!
  
               
  
 Lanier Middle School Ranks First... Again and Again!
 
- Lanier "Spinners" placed first in the regional KidWind wind turbine competition and will be competing in the national competition in New Orleans
FCCLA Members at State Competition
- Christian Heiche, Chloe Kim, and Laura Stravach of the Lanier Family, Career and Community Leaders of America were awarded a gold medal and 1st place in the Virginia state FCCLA competition. The students will compete at the National Leadership Conference in San Diego this July.
- Five teams from Lanier placed in the Top Ten of the School Environmental Action Showcase co-hosted by NoVa Outside and George Mason University.
- Students Ryan Phillips, Luke Hylton, Angelina Joa and Melissa Trivett won the Innovation Challenge at the National School Board Association conference in Boston last month.

Providence Elementary School

 

Providence ES will hold its first ever Kindergarten Mini-Tour on June 3rd from 8:50-9:50 for all incoming kindergartners. For more information about the mini-tour and other kindergarten orientation activities, please see their website here.

Daniels Run Elementary School 
 
On May 2, DRES teachers Mia Leone and Roseanne Candell presented about integrating Project Based Learning within the curriculum for students in all grades. Highlighting fourth grade's media projects, the teachers showcased student work and the drive behind PBL and how it coincides with the criteria for Portrait of a Graduate.
