 March 2015
Letter from City of Fairfax Schools Superintendent

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

As we see clear signs of spring, we want to update you on the missed school days.

Students in Virginia must be in school either 990 hours or 180 days. In the past, FCPS 'counted' by days. You may remember last year we had 11 missed days and added days to the end of the school year. This year, with the elimination of early-release Mondays, we are 'counting' by hours. This allows us to meet the 990 hours even if we go over the 11 days.

As of today, FCPS has used 10 snow days and five two-hour delayed openings for a total of 70 hours. There are 78 extra hours built into the calendar to meet the 990 hour minimum.  The state has excused two of the 10 snow days, which is giving us additional hours. Unless we have another significant storm, we should be clear under the current calendar through the rest of the year.

I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding when it comes to snow days. It is a difficult call each time, and we applaud our colleagues at FCPS for putting the safety of our students first.

Student Panel April 20th 7:00 at Fairfax High School

Each year, the City of Fairfax School Board holds a 'student panel' with students from Lanier Middle School and Fairfax High School. The students are asked questions about their experience in the City schools and reflect on subjects such as AP vs. Honors, homework, meeting new friends, after school activities and college preparations. It is one of the most interesting and enjoyable evenings of the year. The meeting is open to the public and we welcome parents and students to listen. Unlike our regular school board meetings, our work sessions are not on televised so please join us and meet these impressive kids!

Monopole Installation at FHS

Many of you driving on Rebel Run might have noticed the (very) large monopole installation at Fairfax High School. This monopole will improve the cell service at the school and in the area, and will generate funds for both the school and the city.
