Happy New Year, Fairfax, and welcome to the first issue of CloseUp for 2015.

As we lurch from unseasonable warm days to unpredictable snowy ones, this January has provided some challenges for our schools. The City School Board and staff appreciate the communication from parents who had transportation issues. We need to know about these matters so we can work with Fairfax County to avoid them in the future.

Whenever the weather poses a threat, check the radio, television, and Fairfax County Pubic School website for delays and closings. Sign up for Keep In Touch (KIT), the FCPS notification system. As someone who grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and who raised three Virginians, I know how difficult it can be to teach kids that hats, scarves, and gloves are not just fashion accessories, so arm your little cold warriors with the necessary cover-ups even if you have to tuck them into backpacks. And remember, spring is just around the corner!
