 October 2014
Welcome to our new CloseUp. This year we are bringing you streamlined version of our newsletter each month. You will find highlights from our four schools, important dates for the upcoming months and links to articles about education or our schools.
Letter from Our Chairman
Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members,
Welcome the the 2014-15 school year! This year sees new initiatives from Fairfax County Public Schools like full-day Mondays for elementary schools and, as a result, a revised school-year calendar. Our City schools have already received exciting news. Lanier MS and Daniels Run ES have both been honored as Virginia Naturally Schools by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. This award for environmental education is being given to Lanier for the third time and to Daniels Run for the eighth! In addition, The National Parent Teacher Association has named Daniels Run a PTA School of Excellence for the outstanding work done by its PTA. Look to future issues of CloseUp for more accomplishments of our great city schools.
Sincerely,
Toby Sorensen
City of Fairfax Schools Chairman

New Turf at Fairfax High
City of Fairfax School Board members joins city and school leaders to celebrate the new turf at Fairfax High School on September 12!

All Four City Schools Earn Accreditation
In September all four City of Fairfax Schools earned full accreditation from the Virginia Department of Education. To earn full accreditation, at least 75 percent of students must pass reading and writing SOL tests and at least 70 percent must pass state assessments in math, science and history. High schools must also meet a benchmark for graduation and completion.

"Full accreditation for our four schools proves the high level of performance and extraordinary work by our principals, teachers and of course, our students," says Dr. Peter Noonan, Superintendent of Schools for the City of Fairfax. "Our schools ensure our students not only access high level academics, but tailored learning environments and extra support if needed for all students to be successful. This is another example of the commitment and dedication by the City of Fairfax community to our schools."

For more information from the Virginia Department of Education and the accreditation process, please go to the VDOE website.
