It is the month for giving thanks and the City of Fairfax School Board and staff would like to give our thanks for our schools, administrators and teachers for everything they do for our students.
Our "
All-Star Teacher and Staff" page on our website has launched with over 15 all-stars and nominations. Each of our teachers were asked to give one tip to parents. Here some of their answers:
"HAVE FUN with your child!" Ingy Rucker, DRES
"Take time to talk to your child about their day. Ask questions that require more than a yes or no. Engage yourself in your child's education and you can learn so much." Kim Horn, DRES
"Ask questions and listen to your kids. Let them know you want to know them and they will let you." Kathryn Teague, LMS
"Find one thing that both you and your child like to do. Having something to talk about it a great way to connect." Chelsea Large, DRES
"Every child is unique and learns in different ways. Let your child find their passion and meet their needs half way." Esther Lee, PES
"Use FCPS/Blackboard. It will help you be more aware of what is going on in your child's classes." Tom DeRusso, LMS
"Having fun with your child are some of the activities that your child will remember and cherish the most." Jacki Woolsey, DRES

"Ask your child their opinion on topics as this make them feel valued."
Cookie Zimpel, PES
"Praise your child's effort. You can't control whether or not your child will win a game or will 'ace' a test, but you can acknowledge your child's effort put into preparing for those." Catherine Hawkins, LMS
"Everyone has a unique learning style. Some people learn best by seeing or reading, others by listening and doing. Parents can help a child with a learning disability by identifying his or her primary learning style."
So-Young Lee, LMS
"Stress the fact that 'I can't' should not be part of their vocabulary." Katherine Clark, DRES
The number one answer given by our all star teachers...
