Summer Workplace Safety
Here comes summer! With the weather we have enjoyed over the last couple days, it is clear that summer is just around the corner! We of course are very happy to see that big ball of light shining down on us and want to be sure to share summer safety tips for all, especially those working outdoors.
In Washington state, there is actually a rule regarding Outdoor Heat Exposure, which covers those employees who work outdoors, when the outdoor temperature is 89 degrees or higher. For some industries where specific Personal Protective Equipment/clothing is required, the temperature is substantially less. This rule is in effect from May 1 through September 30th of every year.
In order to comply with this law, covered employers must:
1. Address their outdoor heat exposure safety program in their written accident prevention program (APP); and
2. Encourage employees to frequently consume water or other acceptable beverages to ensure hydration.
Employees are responsible for monitoring their own personal factors for heat-related illness including consumption of water or other acceptable beverages to ensure hydration.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends that you be on the lookout for these symtoms of heat illness:
- Sunburn: Redness and pain. In severe cases, swelling of skin, blisters, fever and headaches. First Aid: Ointments for mild cases if blisters appear and do not break. If breaking occurs, apply dry sterile dressing.
- Heat cramps: Painful spasms usually in the muscles of legs and abdomen with heavy sweating. First Aid: Firm pressure on cramping muscles or gentle massage to relieve spasm. Give sips of water. If nausea occurs, discontinue water.
- Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, clammy skin; thready pulse; fainting and vomiting but might have normal temperature. First Aid: Get victim out of sun. Once inside, the person should lay down and loosen his or her clothing. Apply cool, wet cloths. Fan or move victim to air conditioned room. Offer sips of water. If nausea occurs, discontinue water. If vomiting continues, seek immediate medical attention.
- Heat stroke (or sunstroke): High body temperature (106° F or higher), hot dry skin, rapid and strong pulse, possible unconsciousness. First Aid: Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency. Summon emergency medical assistance or get the victim to a hospital immediately. Delay can be fatal. While waiting for emergency assistance, move the victim to a cooler environment and reduce body temperature with cold bath or sponging. Use extreme caution. Remove clothing, use fans and air conditioners. If temperature rises again, repeat process. Do NOT give fluids. Persons on salt restrictive diets should consult a physician before increasing their salt intake.

New FMLA Forms
In February 2013, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) released revised model Family and Medical Leave Act ("FMLA") forms to administer federal FMLA leave. A new notice poster was also released.
The updated forms should be used by employers immediately, although they include no substantive revisions despite recent rulemaking on the FMLA military caregiver leave provisions. You can download copies of the new forms here. |
