Greetings!

"I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself."

Aldous Huxley, 'Point Counter Point'

"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance."

Alan Wilson Watts

There are the changes that take place in nature we have little or no control over. We can't switch the time of tides, or alter the change of seasons. The other kinds of change are those we witness in social, political, or our personal life. These are changes over which one can exercise some degree of control. These are changes which can be guided by our self or others."

How we handle change - how we adapt, measure and react - can be simplified and made more acceptable when we know the reasons for changing, and have all the tools necessary to make the change. At Insights Vancouver, we've spent years helping organizations meet the challenge of change head-on. This month, we share a few stories about change.

'Leading Change' with Managers

Over the past month, Insights Vancouver President Joyce Gwilliam delivered three one-day Leading Change sessions with a major financial services institution. Five more will be delivered over the next few weeks. Building on the Insights Change Engagement Model these sessions are designed for managers and senior leaders charged with leading and sustaining change within the organization. Sessions build on what participants already know about the Insights Discovery platform, and set about strengthening their leadership practices in a changing environment. Together, they explore a disciplined model to guide the development of engagement - project by project.

As one of the leaders pointed out at the beginning of the sessions, "As leaders we need to stay in touch with the people side of change and remember it takes time, energy and a proactive spirit to create a culture where change is accepted and used to create innovation and greatness".  He added, "Research also tells us that leadership teams that fail to plan for the human side of change often find themselves wondering why their best-laid plans fail."

Participants had these things to say at the conclusion of the session:

"Insights has brought clarity to conversation with ease and simplicity for all levels of individuals"
- HR Advisor

"This course helped me recognize how many of the things I take for granted (assume) get in the way of how I manage change. I will approach my change agent role with a more holistic approach"- Mgr., Org.Dev.

"Every time, I learn something new about myself. This self-understanding of how I show up, always improves my ability to lead others in their journeys! Thank you!" - Area Mgr.

The Insights Change Engagement Model provides the metrics to quantify the change process within any organization. If you are interested in discussing the use of this tool within your own organization, or want to learn more about the model, please contact the Insights Vancouver office for more details.

The Insights Change Engagement Model
This past month, Joyce Gwilliam and Senior Learning Consultants Anne Bishop and Shauna Grinke completed the 3rd day of a 2+1 day Making Change Work session with a major Canadian entertainment industry leader.

Building on work from the earlier two-day session, this workshop got leaders and managers focused on fine-tuning their own change strategies for their teams and departments. This session provided the format for them to share their plans for introducing, managing and sustaining changes within the organization.   Incorporating the Insights Change Engagement Model, participants presented their plans and received feedback from the group and the facilitators.

Comments from participants included;

"The engagement model is an invaluable tool that will allow us to move forward successfully in our change management initiative. The facilitators were knowledgeable and high energy - it was a great program"

"I was delightfully surprised by the content and tools that were delivered in a short amount of time and hich could be used immediately."

"Change isn't easy. This session gave us the tools and background to develop a plan"

"4 P's will help me to develop and understand my team better"

Insights Vancouver will continue to collaborate with this organization and work with their leadership team to strengthen and empower their change initiatives. For more details about this action learning process, contact the Insights Vancouver office.
BCHRMA 90-minute Workshop

BCHRMAslide Joyce Gwilliam, President of Insights Vancouver, and Deborah Edwards, AVP of Human Resources for Coastal Community Credit Union, led a 90 minute session for over 130 delegates at this year's BC HRMA Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver.

Building on the Insights Change Engagement model, this session - "Engage, Empower, Enrich: Metrics for Changing Times" - was designed for HR and OD professionals charged with leading and sustaining organizational change.  Together, Deborah and Joyce shared the story of Coastal Community's success in a company-wide change initiative.

They outlined how the organization had built on their past experience with the Insights Discovery model - and lead into application of the Insights Change Engagement process.  With the help of Insights Vancouver, a focused online engagement survey was designed and employee engagement was assessed at several stages of the change.  Leaders reviewed the information and responded. The results helped inform leaders where they should focus their efforts and whether those efforts needed to increase use of fiery red, sunshine yellow, earth green or cool blue behaviours.

Was it successful? Well, the Aon/Hewitt Top 50 Best Employers in Canada survey, done during the change initiative, moved Coastal Community from 49th to 20th position. Through continued use of the model, in the past year they have moved to 15th position. The Change Engagement Model, the survey tools, and the metrics provided everything needed to successfully transform the organization.  For more information about this project, please contact the Insights Vancouver office.
