Parents, have you heard of Secret?
- It's an anonymous messenger app your kid is probably using.
- Kids use it to post short messages with or without images, anonymously.
- Their friends can see what they've posted, and can share, "like" the message, or add comments of their own.
Sounds like harmless fun, what could be wrong with a few shy kids posting some anonymous jokes or one liners?
Nothing.
Until one kid decides to hide behind the anonymity to post offending, cruel remarks about another kid.
And a third kid shares and comments, and a another simply adds a heart (to signify that he likes the message).
Pretty soon everyone has read, shared, commented, or liked the message.
And what if those remarks were about your daughter?
What can you do?
- Talk to your kids.
- Find out if they are using Secret. (or any other similar app such as Whisper, Yik Yak, Backchat, and the list goes on).
- Explain why something that can seems like innocent fun could turn out to be offensive or harmful.
- Tell them, if someone posts mean comments about them, they should tell you about it.
