 CMCC Grad Pursuing Science and Her Bachelor's Degree
Naomi Heuer (Mt. Ararat High School, 2011) does science. She graduated from Central Maine Community College in 2013 with an associate degree in computer tech, earning Honors three out of her four semesters. She's now at the University of Southern Maine for a bachelor's in computer science. As a work-study student, she's using computational bioinformatics to help scientists compile data to analyze DNA. Some of this work has focused on genes related to cystic fibrosis and genes affected by arsenic. Heuer didn't believe she could even go to college. "[ECforME] made me realize I could." She credits her regional director, Pauline Moreau, with nudging her to reach higher. "I certainly needed that nudge!" says Heuer, "I would never be in the place I am without her help!"

 YCCC Senior Recommends a Kickstart  Matthew Petrella-Woodward (Wells High School, 2013) is on his way. A senior in computer tech at York County Community College, he developed lines of code that Kickstarter incorporated into a new video game due out this winter. Shown above is the computer he built from scratch. To better manage, service, and clean the machine's components, he hung them on the outside of the frame. Happy at YCCC, he calls one of his professors "the James Bond of the computer world." Petrella-Woodward chose YCCC because it made financial sense: earn his associate degree, work in the industry, transfer for a bachelor's degree. He told Cait McGurty, his regional director, that "Early College for ME has been very, very helpful." The college course he took in high school as an ECforME participant helped prepare him for his first year of college. He advises current high school students to "get [college] English and math out of the way as early as you can. Being in a different environment gives you a taste of what college is like and opens you up to new relationships." |
 WCCC Student Has College Figured Out
Nicholas Barnes (Shead High School, 2013) earned a certificate in welding last May from Washington County Community College, along with several awards for academic excellence. Now enrolled in heating tech at the college, his goal is to apply his welding and heating certificates to an associate degree in general tech. Barnes spent many hours at Shead during his senior year applying for scholarships, many of which he received, including the one from Early College for ME. He credits Mary-Ann Urquhart, his regional coordinator, with helping him apply to college and navigate WCCC. To students having trouble adjusting to college, he says, "Relax." That translates to "Don't sweat the small stuff. Ask for help." In his free time, Barnes can be found with family, on a ball field, or in the woods hunting. |
 Primed for Success
at KVCC and Beyond
Callie Boudreau graduated from Waterville High School in 2012. "Callie is one of those students you have an instant connection with because of her upbeat personality and great sense of humor," says her high school guidance counselor, Carol Laqualia. In high school Boudreau talked with her ECforME regional director, Pauline Stevens, "about what I wanted for my future and the benefits of enrolling in a community college." A senior at Kennebec Valley Community College, she earned Honors last spring, is a writing tutor, and in December will have her associate degree in liberal studies. "Now," says Boudreau, "I know what I want and how to achieve my goals." She plans to enroll in the University of Maine at Augusta for information and library science. "I wouldn't be the person I am today," she continues, "If it wasn't for Early College for ME and my Early College for ME advisor." |
 NMCC Student Repairs Auto Bodies Eliza Clark attended Mid-Coast School of Technology and graduated from Camden Hills Regional High School in 2013. She's in her second year of auto body repair at Northern Maine Community College and made Dean's List both semesters freshman year. Homesick at first, she coped by making friends and getting involved on campus. Using her welding skills, she and a friend made the trophies for NMCC's dodgeball competition. This year Clark added a major in structural welding. She'll have both that certificate and her associate degree when she graduates in May. She plans to work in a body shop first, then teach at a technical school. "The [ECforME] scholarship made going to college possible," she says. Of Ruth White, regional director, and assistant, Courtney Cyr (who herself graduated from ECforME and NMCC), Clark adds, "Their support is the best! Participate," she advises high school students. "There's no down side!"

 College is What You Make of It, Says SMCC Student
"College is different from high school. Your future is in your own hands," says Antonio Roberts, a 2013 graduate of South Portland High School and a senior at Southern Maine Community College. For him, the best part of college is making connections with other students, professors, and employees. He values Early College for ME for the scholarship and because Christopher Ike, regional director, and Nicole Merryman, assistant, "are always there to help me out." Roberts made Honors both semesters freshman year by completing homework on time, showing up to class, and participating in class. "Professors are here to teach you, not to babysit you," he says. "Whether or not you pass is completely up to you." That said, he recommends finding a balance. "School is extremely important, but so is your health. Join a club or sport, on campus or off, that you will enjoy. This will help you to counteract some of the stress of college." Roberts will graduate in May with an associate degree in liberal studies and plans to transfer to the University of Maine for nursing.

EMCC Student is Dedicated
to Criminal Justice
Nicholas Bazinet (Bangor High School, 2014) first enrolled at Eastern Maine Community College for liberal studies. Through his regional director, Hope Holyoke, he took introduction to psychology at EMCC as a high school senior. After EMCC he planned to transfer for a bachelor's in psychology. His early college course "allowed me to get my feet wet," he says, "and showed me what to expect after high school." Yet once in college, a course in criminal justice caused him to change his career plans. Cornel Plebani, department chair, says of Bazinet, "Nick is one of the most focused and dedicated students in the first-ever criminal justice cohort at EMCC. His level of preparedness extends well beyond the classroom into recent experiential learning with the Orono Police Department, including high risk traffic stop scenarios and Simunitions ( TM)-based use-of-force training." Plebani sees Bazinet as "a student leader for his peers in the CRJ program."
