Congratulations to you! The end is in sight!

You've done your work valiantly, with all of your might!

You've done (most) all of your readings, you've taken the tests,

you've written the papers, and proved you're the best!

You've come so far now there's no turning back,

Just a few more days till we close books with a crack!

If this is the last of your terms at our school,

I wish you the best with all else that you do,

(And remember what's said about graduation,

you never stop learning your life's education).

If you're sticking around to learn more and achieve,

There are so many people here whom in you they believe!

So enjoy the time off as deserved time free

With friends, family, work, or whatever it may be.

I know with finals there's one more test, paper, or project to do,

But do it you can - I believe in you!

Please pardon my rhyming - with finals approaching,

mental facilities can need a tad bit more coaching.

And yet creativity seems to seep through,

I hope as we end, you'll find a fun outlet too!

It's been a pleasure to serve you as your President,

But now that I'm leaving I feel confident

That the next round of officers will more than answer the call

To represent, serve, and speak up for you all.

And now with a last "Hip Hip Hooray!"

I bid you adieu, and wish you good day.

Laura Hunerberg

Sincerely,

Laura Hunerberg

Teaching Girls to Code Project

Brought to you by the Women in Science and Engineering Club.

flatscreen-computer-room.jpg

At the beginning of this Spring '14 semester, female students in STEM careers decided to create the Women in Science and Engineering Club. They started with many doubts and one big idea. Being a woman in a STEM career often means that she will be one of the few (if not only) women around. Their objective is to change that!

They started the Teaching Girls to Code Project as a gateway for High School girls to learn about STEM. With the support of Susan Tappero, Karen Groppi, Kelli Horner and Jo-Ann Panzardi, they made contact with their local high schools. They created a 3-week program for High School girls to learn the basics of Python, a programming language. The Cabrillo College Computer Club joined them and together they prepared to teach and tutor for the 3-week code project.

The program started on April 12th, with girls from SVHS, PCCS, and Delta HS. The girls were really motivated and exceeded the expectations in every possible way (they sometimes were ahead of the teachers).

They will continue with the project next semester, hoping to get new high school girls into basic programming and to expand their current program to teach this first group of girls what comes after the basics. The club hopes to see these girls joining STEM careers at Cabrillo College soon! If you would like to know more about Teaching Girls to Code Project please visit the website.
