Update on CAASPP Testing

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System was established on January 1, 2014. It replaced the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. The assessments are one way to provide information to schools, teachers, and parents regarding NUSD students' progress toward mastering Common Core State Standards.

What tests will be administered?

Smarter Balanced (SBAC)

  • English language arts/literacy and mathematics in grades 3-8 and grade 11
California Alternate Assessments (CAA)
  • CAA field tests in English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics are to be administered to students in grades 3-8 and 11 whose individualized education program (IEP) teams have determined that the student's cognitive disabilities prevent him or her from taking the online CAASPP Smarter Balanced assessments.
Science

  • California Standards Test (CST) for Science-grades 5, 8, and 10
  • California Modified Assessment (CMA) for Science-grades 5, 8, and 10 who meet the eligibility requirements to take this instead of a CST for Science
  • California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) for Science-grades 5, 8, and 10 who meet the CAPA requirements
Standards-based Tests in Spanish
  • The optional STS are multiple-choice tests that allow Spanish-speaking English learners in grades 2 through 11 to demonstrate their knowledge of the California content standards by taking a reading/language arts (RLA) assessment in their primary language.
When will students take tests?

The following chart shows the timeframes in which the tests can be administered during the 2015-16 school year in California. The majority of NUSD students will be tested from mid-April to mid-May.  Every school will notify families when students will be tested.
