James Fund Hosts Global Nb Conference

ANR Logo

We are most proud to be the title sponsor of ANR 2012, the world's largest neuroblastoma research conference. Advances in Neuroblastoma Research is the international "think tank" for about 700 researchers and this year's Chair is James Fund researcher, Dr. Sylvain Baruchel. You may remember that James Fund researcher, Dr. David Kaplan, took the top award at ANR 2008 in Japan for his discovery of the stem cell of neuroblastoma.  Read more...

James Fund "Seed Funding" Model
Our seed grants have contributed to much of the world's knowledge about neuroblastoma and our model has been adopted by other research groups.  Read more...

Spotlight on Researcher Loen Hansford

Excited by our unconventional approach, Loen left Australia's renowned neuroblastoma lab for a one-year James Fund seed grant. Funded by $30,000 of your donations, this project made one of the most important discoveries in the history of neuroblastoma research and resulted in millions of dollars to our cause..

Investing in Our Researchers
Funding cuts have impacted our industry. We remain committed to providing career opportunities for researchers in the field of childhood cancer.  Last year we funded 7 fellowship positions...

Mobilizing Families in Honour of Our Kids

Matthew Hower Foundation and The James Fund are championing neuroblastoma research in Manitoba. We hope to determine exactly where neuroblastoma develops in embryonic cells.

James Fund Sponsors the World's Leading Neuroblastoma Conference

June 18-21, 2012

Hi everyone!

Syd here.

It's been 11 years since we launched The James Fund to raise funds for research which we hoped would find a cure to save our son, James.  We lost James 9 months later and our world tumbled down.

But the very nature of that desperate attempt has become the impetus which has fuelled one of the world's leading efforts in the fight against neuroblastoma.

When we created James Fund, nothing like it existed. We looked. We couldn't find it, so we created it. We convinced one of the top paediatric hospitals in the world to give us a seat at the table and fight specifically for neuroblastoma kids and their families.

At every turn, at every level, someone was there to tell us why it couldn't be done. But we did it anyway.  We invented a new research model that is now emulated around the world and used by families across the country.

It has cost us dearly. Weekends, evenings, family time, and far too much of our own money to create what so many said couldn't be done. Or sustained. Or grown into the leading fund of its kind anywhere in the world.

It was too late for James, but we kept going so it would be in time for someone else's child.

Maybe yours.

So, as much as it has taken from us, it has given too. It has brought each one of you into our lives and it has united families from coast to coast who realize that there is strength in numbers and that we are stronger together than we are alone. That building together is smarter than reinventing the wheel. That saving kids from neuroblastoma is doable, if we all work together.

To date, we have raised almost $5 Million from our donors, leveraged that amount by another $6 Million in matching funding from major granting agencies, and become the largest neuroblastoma initiative in Canada.

Together with other neuroblastoma families we have funded the best neuroblastoma research in the world.  We hold fundraising events, launch national awareness campaigns, advocate for our kids, lobby for funds, provide emotional and financial support to families travelling the same road, and host an annual Retreat.  We have told our story through national TV networks and international publications.

James Fund researchers have taken the top award in the world.  The "seed funding" research model we created has been adopted by other scientists and major granting agencies.  Scientists at the James Birrell Laboratories have become the hub of research collaborations across Canada and 8 other countries.  We are testing 200 of our new treatments and have clinical trials under way at hospitals around North America.

And in June, The James Fund is proud to be the title sponsor of Advances in Neuroblastoma Research 2012, the international "think tank" for neuroblastoma investigators.  We will host an estimated 700 researchers who are coming together to share some of the hottest science in the world.

Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who have supported our cause, fueled our work, and invested in our kids.

We have made huge progress!
