SIGN UP FOR HOSPITALITY
On Sundays, during Godly Play, the children share a "feast" of goldfish crackers and water. During worship, we are invited to Jesus' table, where we share the wine and the bread. After worship, we gather for coffee hour, again sharing food together at the table. Feasting together is a form of worship, and hospitality is at the center of that worship.
You all participate in that hospitality regularly--as communion assistants, by bringing your children for the bread and wine, and even by volunteering your hospitality for coffee hour. If you haven't volunteered in a while, please consider signing up in the social hall bulletin board to help on a Sunday. You don't have to do it alone!
We are all participants at the table--sometimes as hosts, sometimes as guests.
All are welcome.

NEW BIKE RACK & SHELTER @ FAITH
Faith has a new bike rack & shelter! Several years in the dreaming, Faith has wanted to build a safe and covered area for bicyclists to secure their bikes here at Faith. With gifts from the Mike Holl memorial (Mike was an avid cyclist), fundraising from the youth, and and incredible amount of donated labor for design and construction, we were able to make it a reality!

The family of Mike Holl would like to express their sincere and heart-felt appreciation for those involved (especially Sharon Swanson, James Harris, and Chris Behee) in the idea, design, and construction of the Bike Rack to remember him. For those who didn't know him well: he rode in eleven Seattle to Portland bike rides, often rode his bike from home at Lake Samish to work at the Bellingham airport, and biked the back roads of Skagit County and Desert Springs, CA. He enjoyed biking with the middle school youth years ago on their summer Bible study bike rides, and especially enjoyed helping them to learn to maintain their bikes. --Nancy Holl

LIFE AT FAITH
The end of summer brought more Wednesday night fun--lefse-making, hymn-sings, and meals together, as well as the annual Faith Family Camp-Out--complete with tie-dye, croquet, s'mores, and stories around the fire. We kicked off Fall program at Faith on Celebration Sunday (and joined congregations all over the nation celebrating the ELCA's 25th anniversary and "God's Work, Our Hands") with the Blessing of the Bikes & Wheels, Blessing of the new bike rack, the annual church picnic/potluck, and service work in the community garden! We began Late-Morning Catechism (an all-ages confirmation class) after church on Sundays, and we brought our pets to church on Oct. 6 to commemorate St. Francis of Assisi with the Blessing of the Animals. The Spirit lives on in our life together, and we are grateful.

Soaking up the very last bits of summer, Faith youth spent an afternoon in August on rental boats (canoes, kayaks, peddle boats, and rowboats) exploring Lake Samish, swimming, and training a couple young future youth who came along! Later in August, we joined youth from other Whatcom ELCA parishes for a trip to Wild Waves in Renton for water slides, roller coasters, friends, food and sunshine!

TALES FROM THE HOLY HILL
By Rebekah Swanson
Greetings Faith family! I want to thank you all again for such a wonderful sendoff this summer. For your prayers, kind words, and gifts I am truly thankful. Life in the Bay Area is cruising at full speed. I've lost track of the number of weeks I've been in school. These things tend to happen when daily life includes readings from Bonhoeffer, Luther, Richard Hooker and many other notable notables. Somehow, paying attention to a calendar doesn't make it to the top of the reading list. On top of attending four courses this semester I'm also working three jobs in Berkeley. I serve as the Region II Archivist Assistant. This mostly consists of conducting research for individuals and congregations in Region II and sorting and cataloging donations. I'm discovering loads of interesting things about Bay Area Lutherans, especially those congregations that survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. My second job is to serve the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary community as the Community Life Liaison. This involves organizing snacks before worship on Wednesdays and planning parties. Rough life, I know. And lastly, I work as a gardener for a woman who lives in the Berkeley Hills on Friday mornings. I'm learning so much about local plant life and she is also teaching me all about earthquake preparedness. Reading week is less than one week away and it cannot come soon enough. I am hoping to take my "reading" out on local hikes and exploring the various suburbs of the Bay Area. Thanks again for all of your well-wishes and prayers!! Peace and Blessings Rebekah

UPDATE ON BORDER PATROL BUILDING
APPLICATION TO ACQUIRE THE VACATED BORDER PATROL BUILDING ON MCLEOD ROAD ACROSS FROM FAITH.....
As many of you know, we have been working with the Opportunity Council and the Whatcom County Health Department in the application process for the vacated Border Patrol Station across from the church. This is a lengthy process, beginning with extensive documentation for the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
The stipulation for future use of the buildings is assistance for people who are homeless. The areas that we have identified (together with Health Dept., Opportunity Council and an interested group from Faith) are those of emergency short-term housing for families who are homeless, and also medical respite care for homeless persons following surgery.
It has been clear all along that if we were to have this property deeded over to Faith the project could not be funded by the budget of the congregation. Funding will have to come from local agencies, grants, and other contributions. In addition, while being accountable to the congregation, the facility would need a separate board of directors for governance, and staff to oversee things. A board would be assembled with members from other churches and organizations as well as Faith members.
Thanks to Dick Clark and Chris Behee, the incredibly detailed initial application was submitted earlier in the summer. We received a response, and an addendum to the original application was sent back in August. Another, shorter response was called for 3 weeks ago and duly sent off.
We await a final response from the GSA. At that point, if the response is positive, we will schedule a meeting of the membership to discuss the project and vote on whether to go forward.

READING THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
On the first Sunday of Advent (Dec. 1, 2013) we begin a new lectionary cycle - the year of Matthew. In preparation for this we will gather after church on November 24 to read through the whole Gospel. Readers of all ages may sign up at the office - we usually do a chapter each. This is a great opportunity to hear the words of Matthew in its entirety - rather than just the short sections that are selected for the Sunday readings. Even if you don't want to read, please plan to attend.

FROM THE PASTOR
Finally! After endless weeks of green we are changing it up. It's going to be red, white, green, green, white. Variety feels good even if it means a lot of extra work changing paraments and other stuff. Reformation, All Saints, Remembrance, Stewardship, Christ the King and Thanksgiving are on the horizon. Be prepared!
On October 27th we celebrate the heart of our faith - the good news of Christ that makes us free. While giving thanks for the events of the 16th century that brought renewal to the church of that time, we pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to renew and bless us, and bring unity to the church of our time and place.
On Reformation Sunday we have a guest preacher - the Rev. Dr. Gerald Hobbs - a Reformation scholar and Professor Emeritus of Church History and Music from Vancouver School of Theology. To add to the celebration, Dante DeLeon and Spencer Thulin will be affirming their baptisms.
The first Sunday of November is devoted to all the saints. This is an important time to remember the many ways in which our life here at Faith Lutheran Church today has been built and funded on the efforts of those who have gone before us. It is a time to remember both that great cloud of witnesses of every time and place who surround us in our worship, and also those particular saints who have walked with each of us on our journey. It is a time to renew our commitment to the church of the present and the future.
November is also the month where we remember those who have lost their lives in service to their countries and pray for the safety of those currently in harm's way in the various conflicts around the world.
It is the month when we examine and renew our commitment to the ministries and life of this congregation and prayerfully consider our pledge for the coming year.
It is a month when we will welcome new members to this parish community and also get to meet little baby Twigg-Harris!
There is much to be thankful for.
I give thanks for each one of you!
