THANK YOU FROM DOROTHY DAHL
A BIG thank you to all the folks who took time to help me celebrate my 80th birthday, whether by phoning, sending cards via snail mail or email, or attending the party at the boathouse in Zuanich park. To say that I was surprised at the number of people who attended the party is putting it mildly. I was overwhelmed by it all and will remember this celebration forever. Thanks to all of you.

"Late Morning Catechism"
ALL-AGES CONFIRMATION CLASS
OFFERED THIS FALL AT FAITH!
Sundays, Sept 15 - Oct 20, 2013
11:15 - 12:15
Each year, the congregation participates as wide-eyed middle school youth affirm their baptisms in front of the assembly--taking on the promises for themselves and formally joining the community as individual members. In this parish, the confirmation program attempts spiritual formation with the youth in the following ways: Bible study, church history, community involvement, youth activities, and participation in worship.
Not everyone who comes to church, however, begins their journey by being baptized as an infant and growing up exploring their faith along any predictable timeline. All are welcome in this place at Faith, and many join in the life and work of this community at different times and places along their paths.
The all-ages Confirmation Class, offered this fall at Faith, takes the model of the traditional confirmation class and re-works it into an opportunity for anyone, of any age, to explore the faith, the denomination, and this community and to process that understanding into more personal faith formation and baptismal identity.
This class will include a variety of leadership, study resources, teaching and personal work, and group interaction--guaranteed to take on a personality of its own depending on those who take part. There are no prerequisites for this class--you can be a veteran of the faith or someone brand new to the tradition. You will be most equipped by coming in openness, bearing questions, not answers. You may not find answers here either--but we hope you will find a safe place for your exploration.
If you are interested in attending the All-Ages Confirmation Class, contact Pastor Sharon Swanson or Jessie Twigg-Harris.

LIFE AT FAITH
During summers at Faith, we switch gears from some of our normal routines and schedules, and make time to enjoy a different pace, different weather, and some wacky community activities and projects. On Sundays, we enjoy different liturgies and the luxury of opening the windows in the worship space. Summer Wednesdays include BBQ dinners, all-ages activities like hymn-sings, workshops, and hula-hoop making, and Holden Evening Prayer (6:00 - 8:00pm). Already this summer, members of Faith walked in the Bellingham Pride parade, cheering and handing out temporary tattoos and mardi gras beads. We've gathered to eat hot dogs and salmon burgers. We've sung Holden Evening prayer outside in the courtyard, with the sounds of I-5 in the background. We've worked on making wool sheep and homemade musical instruments and enjoyed ice cream cones and homemade pie. August holds plans for more ways of gathering.
We are grateful for sunshine to enjoy, for ways to work within our community, for good food to share, and for the many ways to worship.

REPORT FROM CONFIRMATION CAMP
By Mark Behee
(Delivered to the congregation on Sun, Aug 4, 2013)
Two weeks ago I arrived at Camp Lutherwood. I would be staying there for a week, and so began my first day. My cabin mates and I waited for the last of the people to arrive at camp, and we talked about how we can't escape that God is always with us and always will be with us. After dinner, we went to Holden Evening Prayer. And there was evening, and there was morning, the first day.
Confirmation Camp is different than normal camp at Lutherwood. The activities are not only fun, but they helped us to get closer to God. The ropes course inspired trust in God, we were given the strength to hold on during tubing, and hiking brought us closer to God's creation. At the end of the day, we all went to Vespers, a type of worship, and prayed. Vespers not only calmed us down after campfire and playing games all day, but it also made us see God in a new way.
On the second day, we got up at 7:30, which I do not recommend, and we ate pancakes with too much whipped cream. After attempting to clean up our cabin, it was time for chapel. Chapel is like church, but with more singing, and less sermons. We then went off in our separate ways to do Bible encounter. Bible encounter was like Sunday school, but it was more focused, and quieter. We learned during that Monday morning that God is here in creation, and that everything God made has a purpose. In Genesis, it tells us that God looked over creation, and he saw that it was not just good, but it was
very good. This was powerful to all of us because God loves us all, but he also loves the fish of the sea and the birds of the air. He loves everything in the whole of creation.
On the third day, Bible Encounter told us that neither life nor death, nor angels nor demons, neither the past, the present or all of creation will ever separate us from God's love. So no matter what we do, we will always be sons and daughters of God, and he will always love us. It is impossible to separate us from God and his love. This was a very powerful message to me and my cabin mates, many of whom were from Christ Lutheran Church in Ferndale. That day, we painted cabins as a service project, and we came out feeling like we did a good thing. And of course, some of us spilled a bit of house paint on our clothes....
On day four, we learned that God is here in the Church. The Church is where we gather to worship, and it is a large symbol of community, and God is in us and with us. After lunch was B.O.B. time, which is body on bunk time. BOB time is a chance that we all needed by the middle of the week, and we all took an hour to rest. During BOB time, we got to learn about God by resting and being quiet. The silence gave us time to reflect on chapel and our service projects that we had done that day. So when it was BOB time, most of us were quiet. Most.
On the fifth day, we learned that God is everywhere. Anywhere we go, God is there with us in the plants, the insects, the hummingbirds, and all of creation. Summing up the week, I see that all of us came closer to God during that time, and that it was a very good experience for me. The people of Faith helped me to get to Lutherwood, and I am greatly thankful.

FAITH COMMUNITY GARDEN
The garden is in full swing! Harvests are plentiful with deep greens and bright fruits. You're invited to walk through the garden sometime soon and to appreciate the space and food that can be produced right here in our own backyard! In a time when simple access to space to grow your own food can not be taken for granted, we are grateful that these hard-working gardeners can do just that here. And if you've ever eaten a meal hosted by Maple Alley Inn, you may be eating fresh garden greens, cultivated and harvested in the garden, then brought straight into the kitchen and prepared for the feast! Thanks be to God for the many ways we are blessed through God's good creation.
If you would like to volunteer in the garden this season, please contact: community.garden@faithbellingham.org.

UPDATE ON BORDER PATROL BUILDING
By this time, you are probably aware that the building across from Faith (formally Border Patrol offices) has become available, specifically for use by a non-profit for the alleviation of homelessness. When Faith was informed of this and invited to complete an application for the building's use a couple months ago, entirely new and wild ideas for how we might be able to put the building to good use began brewing. Our application was submitted to the federal government in late July, thanks to a great deal of detailed work by Dick Clark and Chris Behee. We are told that the property will be available for an open house sometime in August. Until that time, we remain open and full of wonder at what might become of such a new possibility. No contracts have been signed, nor commitments made--we are merely in the process of open inquiry. Binders of all materials relating to the matter have been made available to members in the social hall--please feel free to look through these and familiarize yourselves with the current status of this process. For now, we remain open, we wait, and we pray for guidance in the face of great possibility.

FROM THE PASTOR

A recent plaground monitor.
Like many in the church we are busy figuring out how to celebrate two completely non-liturgical holidays. At no place in the Gospels does Jesus talk about Labor Day or Celebration/Rally Sunday, yet these are important times for festivity and feasting, both in and outside the church.
Here at Faith we have our own ways of making fun and celebrating. These are traditions with a small 't' yet they are important to us. Labor Day weekend is when the 2nd Annual Faith Lutheran Family Camp-Out is scheduled. Who would have thought that a good time might be had sleeping in a tent approximately 50 yards from Interstate 5? Yet many of our families take part with children of all ages and sometimes the family dogs!!
A meal is shared, games are played, children are put to bed, and conversation continues late into the night. Relationships are built and strengthened. Next morning those who come early to the church will find sleepy children eating breakfast in the social hall, and parents preparing to host the coffee hour. It's a good thing!!
Even as we celebrate the Labor Day weekend in our own way, it's important to remember the roots of this holiday - this is officially the day when parades and other events are formed to honor trade and labor organizations. Some from our own congregation are union members, while others may disagree with the work of the unions. As Jesus' followers, however, we must all consider issues of economic and social justice from the perspective of our baptisms, and live our individual faith within the workplace.
As Jesus followers it is our call to make responsible decisions about the goods that we purchase so that, as much as possible, we are making decisions that support fair trade practices, safe work environments, and human rights. Labor Day may not be a liturgical holiday, but it is a day that can remind the church about some important issues that we should be concerned about.
Celebration Sunday (September 8) promises to be huge this year. There's much to celebrate!! In addition to gathering around Word and Meal we will be welcoming new members into the community; at the end of the service we will process outside where we will bless the wheels - bicycles, skateboards, wheelchairs, walkers, roller blades - all wheel-based people-powered forms of transport.
As if that isn't enough the next task will be the blessing of a new bike rack, being built in memory of Mike Holl, who died last year, and who was an avid cyclist. This bike rack will be appreciated and enjoyed by all members and guests of the parish.
Still on that Sunday we are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, of which Faith is a member parish. Yellow t-shirts will be worn with the slogan "God's Work - Our Hands." As a community we will work together in Faith's Community Garden. Somewhere in the midst of all this activity we will have a picnic lunch!
And if Celebration Sunday is the beginning of the program year, the Gospel for that day should make us sit up and take notice. Read Luke 14: 25-33! How do we conduct ourselves in light of these words? Certainly Jesus' sermon is a rallying cry, but of a different kind - less about growth and energy and more about focus and commitment.
For the rest of the fall, through to Reformation Sunday, I want to encourage the whole congregation - members of all ages - to engage with us in "Late Morning Catechism: An All-Ages Confirmation Class" in the Social Hall. For a few short weeks, we ask that you forego visiting with friends and family and instead take part in a lively conversation with Faith members of all ages, but particularly the confirmation class. It will be fun. It will be stimulating. You might learn something, and yes, there will be food and coffee. Enjoy.
Blessings to all of you in these "dog days" of August. Enjoy the late summer sun, the ripening fruit, the harvest of vegetables and the goodness of the land.
God's peace,
Sharon
