And, if possible, she'd love recipes that highlight food that is raised or grown in the Pacific Northwest.

Cross Perspectives: Why Did Jesus Die?
Many people today owe their understanding of why Jesus died to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, a film that has grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide since its release in 2004. A closer look at the New Testament, however, reveals explanations for how and why Jesus died that differ considerably from Gibson's account. This series explores each interpretation of Jesus' death in the New Testament, illustrating the rich diversity of explanations that Paul and the Gospel writers gave for how and why Jesus died on the cross.

FAITH QUILTERS
Contributed by Dorothy Dahl
The quilters started in 1992; the leader at that time suggested that we give our quilts to local charities here in Bellingham--she thought there was a big need for them locally--so we have continued doing that. We give full size quilts to Red Cross, YWCA, Lydia Place (a for women with or without children), Women's Shelter, Dorothy Place, Opportunity Place; and our lap robes are given to nursing homes here in Bellingham.
I help to deliver the full size quilts, and it really warms my heart when I see the smiles on the receptionists' faces upon delivering the quilts. The lady who delivers the lap robes gets the same reaction. One comment I often hear is: "Oh I know where these quilts come from!"
We are always delighted to receive written thank you notes from these agencies. One note from the American Red Cross says in part: "your donation of the quilts is as important to us as is monetary donations." A thank you from the YWCA says: "We wanted to take this opportunity to tell how much these quilts mean to the women here at the YWCA. They often arrive with very little of their own. When they see their room for the first time, they are greeted with a cozy room, complete with a quilt they get to keep forever. It is a pleasure for us to be able to pass along your beautiful handiwork."
The Faith Quilters also give lap robes to members of our congregation who are home-bound or in nursing homes, so if you know of someone who could use one of our quilts, please let one of us know or contact the church office.
So far this year we have delivered 79 lap robes and quilts!
Finally, we want to thank Thrivent Financial for help in keeping this project alive. With their generous grant help, we are able to purchase the batting used in our quilts.

MORNING POEM
By Mary Oliver
Every morning
the world
is created.
Under the orange
sticks of the sun
the heaped
ashes of the night
turn into leaves again
and fasten themselves to the high branches ---
and the ponds appear
like black cloth
on which are painted islands
of summer lilies.
If it is your nature
to be happy
you will swim away along the soft trails
for hours, your imagination
alighting everywhere.
And if your spirit
carries within it
the thorn
that is heavier than lead ---
if it's all you can do
to keep on trudging ---
there is still
somewhere deep within you
a beast shouting that the earth
is exactly what it wanted ---
each pond with its blazing lilies
is a prayer heard and answered
lavishly,
every morning,
whether or not
you have ever dared to be happy,
whether or not
you have ever dared to pray.

Report from Faith Urban Plunge Confirmation Weekend in Seattle
By Jessie Twigg-Harris
Three confirmation youth (Mark Behee, Dante DeLeon, and Noah Markwood) and three adults from Faith joined with several other Confirmation groups from area Lutheran parishes for a weekend together in Seattle. The agenda for the weekend included visiting different communities of faith, trying a variety of ethnic foods, participating in service work, being exposed to the UW Lutheran Campus Ministry center, and having the opportunity to build relationships with other confirmation youth from the area. The larger group totaled about 25 youth and adults. We were warmly welcomed at Idris Mosque of Seattle, at Temple De Hirsh Sinai in Seattle, at Gurdwara Singh Sabha (Sikh Temple) in Renton, and at St. Mark's Cathedral (Episcopal) in Seattle. We tried Lebanese and Mongolian food, and we also ate at Luther's Table (A Lutheran restaurant ministry in Renton). The youth were welcomed and taken on campus tours by UW students, who also answered questions about what it looks like to get involved in the Lutheran community on campus. On Saturday night, we had our own candlelit prayer service (Prayer for the Nations) during which the youth read the names of every nation on earth, and we prayed "Peace be yours." It was a rich weekend, and Faith youth represented well! Take a look below at a few pictures from our trip!

LIFE AT FAITH
Go. Remember. Serve.
As is now tradition at Faith, we gathered on Shrove Tuesday for our annual Pancakes & Talent Show! This year was no exception--from dog tricks and juggling to french horn and gymnastics. Each year these crazy Lutherans pull something surprising out of the hat. We are grateful for these opportunities to gather--this time as we prepared to enter the journey of Lent.

FROM THE PASTOR
God's Work. Our Hands.
Hold us in your mercy. Hold us in your mercy
Our Lenten services have brought us into a strange new space. Epiphany stars, festive paraments, and the plants and flowers of the season seem long ago and far away. Now the sanctuary is clothed in purple. There are bare branches and stones from the riverbed adorning the altar, the font, and along the windows.
The haunting harmonies of the Lenten processional litany on these Sundays bring us together to hear the Word, to sing God's praise, to ask for mercy for ourselves and for all creation, and to share a meal. I find myself remembering little pieces of the litany during the course of the week: love poured out from heaven; sent to bring the poor good news; you who bear our cross with us; come and break the chains that bind us; let us rise to life with you.
The symbols and rituals of our worship change with the seasons. They have also changed and evolved over time, as has our understanding of their meaning. However, all Christians, everywhere in the world make claims about what influence Sunday worship has on all the other days - Monday through Saturday - on the values we hold, the decisions we make, and the actions we undertake, as a result of that worship.
Blessings for the rest of the Lenten journey; pray the litany; pray for each other and for the world. Hold us in your mercy. Hold us in your mercy.
God's peace,
Sharon
