ADULT SERIES ON GRIEF
Although no two people grieve the same, individually we set our own grieving patterns. As a result, we often ignore a task that prohibits us to complete our grieving.
Join us Sundays in November (following Worship in the Gathering Room), for a series of four sessions on grief to explore our grief patterns and discover ways to guide us towards healing. This conversation will be facilitated by Jodi Greene and Kathy Thulin.

REFORMATION DAY
On Sunday, October 28, 2012, we celebrated Reformation Day--a day commemorating Dr. Martin Luther's posting of his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 21, 1517. This act triggered the movement in world history known as the Reformation, as well as the beginning of some major theological shifts within the church.
The liturgical color for Reformation Day is red, and on this Sunday at Faith, we celebrate Confirmation--the tradition in which young people affirm their baptisms in the presence of their church families.

This Reformation Day, Noah Markwood and Kolby Olson affirmed their baptisms during the service. As part of their preparation for this act, we ask them to prepare a statement that in some way authentically articulates their faith. Each of their statements is included below.

Noah Markwood
I can't remember my earliest memories here at Faith because I have just always been here. Some of the people who are most important to me in my faith are Nana and Papa, my dad, Bill and Marjorie Burkitt, and Pastor Sharon. One of my favorite experiences was the youth trip to the Oregon Coast-I remember the readings we would do at night down on the beach around the fire.
One of my favorite things to do is go camping and fishing, so when I was thinking about my favorite passages from the Bible, I thought of Matthew 4:18-20: "As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea-for they were fishermen. And he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.' Immediately they left their nets and followed him."
Kolby Olson
My first memories at Faith will always be special to me. Some of my first memories include thinking our old pastor, Dick Christensen, was God; standing with my whole family before church and watching them talk to other members of the congregation; and at the end of church, trying to beat my brothers to the social hall for food. I usually lost. I have lots of great memories from Sunday School to Christmas programs to Youth activities.
A lot of people have helped me through my journey like my parents and my grandparents. Also my brothers were a little help. Other people I would like to thank are Dick Christensen (also known as "God"), Pastor Sharon ("Mrs. God"), Jessie, and Don and Cindy Early. Now that I have a firm foundation beneath me, the next part of my journey is best described by Isaiah, "Yet the strength of those who wait with hope in the Lord will be renewed. The will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and won't become weary. They will walk and won't grow tired."

FAITH YOUTH
Youth Serve CAST Downtown
Second Wednesdays monthly 6:30-7:30pm
(Followed by regular program at the church--upcoming dates: 11/14, 12/12)
Sunday Trip to Jones-Moles
Sun, Nov 18, 2012 11:15am-1:00pm
Directly after worship, we'll load up and go over to Jones-Moles Funeral Home for a guided tour by Paul Spinelli. As a community, we experience life, as well as death, among those we love. From a faith perspective, it is healthy for young people to be supported in their questions about death. This is an educational trip--all youth and parents are encouraged to attend. Paul has many years of experience guiding families through the preparations upon the loss of their loved ones--he is great with young people and prepared to answer all kinds of questions!
Christmas Photo Scavenger Hunt
Wed, Dec 19, 2012 7:15-9:30pm
Meet at Faith. For this activity, we will be driving to various locations throughout Bellingham. All youth participating must have current permission form/medical release on file.

MUSICALLY SPEAKING
The schedule for fall includes:
Adult Choir Rehearsal Wednesdays, 7:15-8:45PM
Adult Choir Warm-Up Sundays, 9:20-9:40AM
Chime Choir Rehearsal Sundays, 8:45-9:15AM
I'd like to share some quotes from Martin Luther regarding music:
"How is it that in matters concerning the flesh we have so many fine poems and hymns but that in those concerning the spirit we have such sluggish, cold affairs?"
"Singing is a noble art and good exercise. It has nothing to do with worldly affairs, with the strife of the market place and the rivalries of the court. The singer fears no evil; he forgets all worry and is happy."
"The devil does not stay where music is."
"Singing is praying twice."
You have probably heard these before, yet they bear repeating. Let your voice reflect the best worship you have to give!
Peace and grace,
Renee

FAITH COMMUNITY GARDEN
Faith Community Garden is a project designed to create intentional garden space for community members and meal programs to grow their own food. It is also a way to meet people, learn about gardening techniques, and share the harvest! As we wrap up our second gardening season, many gardeners are requesting to keep their bed for next season, while a few beds may be up for grabs! If you or anyone you know is interested in gardening with us this next year, we'd love to have you!
Email the garden team at:
community.garden@faithbellingham.org
Faith Community Garden's Mission Statement:
"Believing in the essential goodness of the earth, Faith Community Garden aims to promote stewardship, foster community, and address local hunger by offering garden space for our neighbors, the greater community, and members of the church."

LIFE AT FAITH
Go. Remember. Serve.
Each month in the life at Faith brings new gifts. During October, we welcomed Rev. G. Lee Kluth, Director of Congregational Relations at PLU--sharing his energetic storytelling, his infectious laughter, and his teaching. We celebrated St. Luke, the physician, and honored the healthcare workers. We baptized Lucas Cole Greene, welcoming him into his faith family, promising to love and support him, and re-telling the story that reminds us who we are and whose we are. We celebrated the Reformation by standing with Noah Markwood and Kolby Olson as they affirmed their baptisms. And on the first Sunday of November, we remembered all the saints who have gone before us--the great cloud of witnesses--especially those members of our faith community who have died in the past year: Mike Holl, Ruth Lumbert, Edgar May, Velma Morrison, Harold Russell, Darlene Sager, and Arlene Stephan.
As always we gathered, we ate, we shared the stories, and we prayed.
And...we are grateful.
