Medical Terminology Course for Sign Language Interpreters
The Disability and Communication Access Board sponsored a sixteen (16) hour course entitled, "Medical Terminology for Sign Language Interpreters" on October 4, 5, 11, and 12, 2013 at the Ward Warehouse, Building D, Kakaako Conference Room in Honolulu, Hawaii.
DCAB welcomed the instructor, Sally Pestana, who is a
professor of health sciences at Kapiolani Community College. She has taught the secrets of learning medical technology for 30 years. Sally has an excellent reputation for making medical terminology both fun and interesting. The course was designed to decrease the intimidation an interpreter may feel when interpreting medical terms.
Twenty-five (25) sign language interpreters participated in the course. The course received high praises through evaluations and many expressed a desire for another medical terminology training in the future. Two (2) medical terminology trainings on surgical procedures and role play scenarios with a deaf patient and doctor were suggested.
The DCAB would like to thank the Hawaii Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. for providing pupus during the training breaks.
For more information about the training, please contact Kristine Pagano, Communication Access Specialist by phone, (808) 447-1397 or email, kristine.pagano@doh.hawaii.gov.

Hawaii Quality Assurance System Continuing Education Program
The Disability and Communication Access Board administers the Hawaii Quality Assurance System (HQAS) Continuing Education Program.
The HQAS Continuing Education Program is available to sign language interpreters who currently hold the HQAS credential.
The purpose of the HQAS Continuing Education Program is to provide interpreters the opportunity to develop and increase knowledge and competency in the interpreting field while maintaining their credential. To participate in the HQAS Continuing Education Program, the application fee is $100.00.
Continuing education units are earned through two types of fields: Professional and General Studies. These studies assure the public that interpreters are trained with the necessary skills to meet the definition of a qualified interpreter under the Americans with Disabilities Act in providing effective communication.
Since its inception, the HQAS Continuing Education Program has nineteen (19) interpreters participating in the program. The first cycle of the program will end on November 30, 2013. A new two-year cycle will begin January 1, 2014. The DCAB appreciates the 19 local interpreters participating in the program to maintain their credential and to increase their knowledge and competency in the interpreting field. DCAB will continue to support and provide workshops for CEU opportunities and is encouraged by the positive responses from the interpreter community.
