Word on the Stream

Leading the Way For More Women To Enjoy the Art of Angling

Laura MacFarland, River Alliance's Invasive Species Project Director, likes to fish for trout.  More accurately, she likes the excuse to stand thigh high in clean, cool rushing rivers, clearing her mind of all but the hypnotic song of flowing water, the dance of insects in the air, and the magical moment when a beautiful fish rises. For these reasons she has been a member of Trout Unlimited (TU) for over 10 years to help conserve, protect and restore coldwater streams and their watersheds.

Laura has long known that she is minority within TU.  Currently, only 5% of TU members are women, while nearly 25% of all flyfishers are female. Laura saw this gap as a huge opportunity to recruit more individuals to assist in implementing TU's mission.  So three years ago she co-founded of a successful three day clinic sponsored by the Southern Wisconsin TU Chapter to teach women to flyfish AND to be stewards of coldwater resources.  As a result the chapter has seen a 143% increase in women members in the past three years.

Trout Unlimited National noticed the same gap and currently has a nationwide initiative to recruit more women.  This month Laura was asked to join 20 other women from around the country in Steamboat Springs to present on her success here in Wisconsin.  Women in attendance were inspired.  As a result,  Laura will be working closely with National TU staffers to help implement similar efforts around the country.

If you know a woman who loves trout and the amazing waters they thrive in, TU is offering free memberships to women.  Pass it on:  www.tu.org/women

Welcome Our Newest Rat: Joanne Jacobson

It looks like we managed to hide our rat tails just long enough to convince Joanne that saving rivers is a civilized vocation, and that really, most of the time, we do remain on dry land. Happily, she is eager to join our team and to continue the good work of her Donor Relations Director predecessor, David Pausch, reaching out to donors and helping fellow river-lovers support our work.

Before her arrival at the River Alliance she ran the membership program for Lincoln Park Zoo, and previously did fundraising for community development and arts organizations. She fell for Madison (and a Madisonian) while studying at the UW and is thrilled to be back.

An army brat (her words!) who has called many places home, Joanne mostly grew up in Michigan and Alaska. She serves on the board of Girls on the Run of Dane County, and likes traveling, baking and art in unexpected places. It's hard to pick, but one of her favorite travel experiences was seeing wild seal pups on a hike in New Zealand.

Questions about your membership or about giving to the River Alliance? Drop Joanne an email jjacobson@wisconsinrivers.org or give her a ring (608)257-2424 X 114 - she would love to get to know you!

WOW! Thank you to everyone that has given to the River Action Fund.  We are inspired to see how many of our supporters share our faith in citizen-led conservation as the most effective tool for saving Wisconsin's flowing waters.

If you have not yet given, we hope that you will find a way to contribute to our effort to empower ordinary people to advocate for the waters they love.

During election season we know you're already bombarded with requests for donations, but remember: no matter who is in office they will need to be held accountable for protecting our waters.
