HCM Board Retreat

The HCM Board of Directors will be meeting September 19-21 in Los Angeles, California. On Saturday, they will be attending a seminar called Helping Without Hurting. It is being presented by Dr. Brian Fikkert one of the two authors of the book When Helping Hurts. The seminar is designed to give an overview of the core principles of the book and to get entire ministry networks operating from the same framework in their approach to alleviate poverty.

Those attending are Mike Tvedt (Board Chair), Lonnie Burley (Board Vice Chair), Dr. Serge Geffrard (Board Secretary/Interim Treasurer), Dr. John Caldwell (Board member), Michael Blumenstein(bookkeeper), and Edwens Prophete. Also joining them are HCM's new board members Dr. Guesly Dessieux (family physician) and Chris Fowler (Outreach Director at Kingsway Christian Church). These two men of God have already gone above and beyond for the ministry in Haiti.

In addition to attending the seminar, the board will hold its second annual retreat hosted by Mike Tvedt. Main topics of discussion at the meeting will consist of education, medical work, construction of new and existing medical facilities, peanut butter production, agriculture, and our current financial state. Please pray for this group as they receive God's vision to better serve our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

A Letter to Our Child Sponsors

Dear Sponsors,

Let us start out by thanking you so much for sponsoring a child with HCM. The sponsorship program not only provides an education and meal for the child you sponsor but also feeds 3,400 more children in the HCM schools. Sponsoring a child provides education materials such as books, pencils, paper, and desks. It also helps pay the teachers' salaries. Without your generous giving, none of these children would be able to receive an education.

After the earthquake in 2010, things were in mass confusion with lost records, displaced children, and all schools in Haiti shut down. HCM concentrated on relief efforts to rebuild homes, schools, and churches that were lost or damaged. Now that most of that has been taken care of, the shift has been made to get back to educating children, building up the churches, and making disciples of Christ.

We (George & Char Frank) are the new directors of sponsorship in the U.S. We are committed to being a link between you and your sponsored child. New programs are being implemented to make sure you receive a letter and picture of your sponsored child by Christmas and another letter at the end of the school year, letting you know how that child did through the year.

We ask for your patience as this new program progresses. We've noticed some problems that we are trying to work out. If you have any problems or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at char@haitianchristianmission.org or 844-426-1974 extension 2.

On another note, we are looking for Ambassadors of Sponsorship, people around the U.S. who, led by the Holy Spirit, would be willing to work with us in promoting the sponsorship program. Please pray for guidance in this endeavor.

We thank you for your continued prayers for the sponsorship program and HCM.

With the Kingdom in mind, the best is yet to come.

Another Successful Training Session for Pastors

by Etienne Prophete

Our pastor training seminar was a success again this year. We had twenty-nine pastors come for the training. We arranged for the men to spend the night on campus so we could start on time at 8:00 am to finish at 4:00 pm. For three days we worked tirelessly with the pastors and it was a total success. The mission had sufficient space for them as we had no foreign visitors with us this time. Unfortunately, many of our pastors could not make it due to not being able to afford transportation.

The subjects were: The Pentateuch taught by Etienne Prophete, the four gospels by Jonas Dorlus, and three other themes (prophets, kings and priesthood) by Maurice Rosicler. We were able to establish a connection between the Old and the New Testaments. After the program, a test was given to the students. Most of them passed it successfully and a certificate was delivered. The kitchen ladies fed them three times a day by stretching the available funds.

We thank Bethel Church for providing the funds for those activities. The mission continues to grow qualitatively and numerically. All the preachers are excited and want to do more to promote growth in their churches by reaching the lost and strengthening the saved.

Staff Spotlight: Jonas Dorlus, Director of Evangelism
by Jonas Dorlus

Personal information

I am Jonas Dorlus. I have been married to Jietchint Bruny for four years. I have a twenty-one month old daughter. Her name is Lordanie Rapha . I am a graduate of WISE (Windward Islands School of Evangelism) with a bachelor degree in theology. I am a translator, graduated from the Superior Institute of Translation and Interpretation in Port-au-Prince built by Dr. Etienne Prophete. I am also a graduate of " Ecole Superieur St-Ignace" with a diploma in education sciences. Desiring to pursue my studies to be more effective, I am almost finished with a masters degree program in education with Indiana Wesleyan University. I would like to be equipped to better serve in the work that God has entrusted to me in HCM.

My introduction to HCM

I was introduced to HCM by Dr. Etienne Prophete. In 2000, Dr. Prophete came to the First Redeemed Christian Church of Haiti (Port-au-Prince) and started talking about the opening of the Translation School. He wanted to offer something durable and meaningful to the young people of the community because the country itself does not offer much to us. He encouraged us in the church to come learn English. I became a student of the school. While in the institute, Dr. Prophete called on us to interpret whenever missionaries were present. In 2002, Dr. Prophete received some scholarships from WISE to send young people to study theology. He extended the invitation to the class with caution and precision saying that if any of us had the calling of God to study His Word, we should let him know. I saw him after class and he gave me the application form for the scholarship. I went to WISE and spent three years there studying God's word. When I returned, Dr. Prophete embraced me in the sponsorship program. I assisted Josee who was the Sponsorship Program Director at that time. That was my introduction to Haitian Christian Mission.

My work at HCM

Right now, I am in charge of evangelism in the mission. I oversee the fifty-seven churches to inquire about their needs and the challenges that they are facing in their neighborhoods. I collect monthly reports from the churches in order to report to our CEO. I also put the collected reports together to report to the government and ministry of religion annually. We are recognized and authorized by the country to run the mission, so we are obligated to tell them what we are doing. I also plan training seminars for the leaders and pastors of HCM. When the Prophetes are not here, I am the immediate contact person in place. Because of that, I am involved in lots of administrative work on our campus. Our CEO, Edwens Prophete, believes in teamwork. He works alongside me in some areas for the wellbeing of the mission. Sometimes I work as a secretary, a receptionist, and an interpreter. I am pleased to do that, because it is God's work. I must also say that working at HCM forms my character as a result of being among a good company.

What I like about doing God's work

What I like about doing God's work is that whatever you do for Him, He counts it. He will not stay without pouring His richest blessings upon you. He understands your struggles. Many times, He uses them to form your character and bring maturity in return. When God calls you for a job in His Kingdom or in the ministry, He makes provision and equips you for it.

How God is able to use my expertise and experience to help others

God was able to use my expertise and experience to help me grow spiritually. As a preacher of His word, I feel like every time I am preparing a sermon, I see room for improvement. I learn more of Him and seek to apply His word daily in my life. I am thankful to God for what He has accomplished throughout the years by putting me to work at HCM. There I am able to serve and minister to different people. Since I am a young man placed over many older and more mature pastors, I understand my task is not easy. It requires wisdom from God and humility to really work with them. Some of them stated that they have learned things from me that are helpful and useful for them in their ministry. HCM is a ministry of service. You cannot spend a day without serving people. This has developed in me a life of service. This is one of the things that is special about HCM, people never stop coming to you. You have great opportunity to serve in different ways. At the same time, doors are open before you to share the love of Christ with others. I have grown a lot in my life of service and people around me see the necessity to do the same. Thanks be to God, for even I can be a tool in His hands for the work of His service.
