Words inspire us. Words help us to relate and describe how we feel. Words are a valuable communication tool for every Interior Designer to discover a client's true desires. Paying attention and listening to how my client's describe something is informing me what they need to feel emotionally comfortable in the new space we are creating.

As part of my client's discovery process, I ask them to circle the words on a page that best describe how they want their room's atmosphere to feel. The discovery process of analyzing decorating words can come in handy especially when working with couples because it's a simple but effective way to clarify each person's desired outcome. We can then negotiate the areas that the couple has in common.

The power word for my client's project was: Quiet.
My interruption of that word told me she is she needing a quiet, relaxing, calming, restful, comforting, soothing, peaceful environment to welcome her every morning.

This week, I was selecting countertops with one of my remodeling clients and she described to me the word that attracted her to the marble and her word was "Quiet". She is attracted to and desired a countertop that did not have a lot of mixed colors or a busy pattern for her Master Bathroom counters. The marble is sophisticated and elegant. It is the perfect option for upgrading their look to the next level. See how important one little word can be. We were able to select all the countertops for the whole house in a timely fashion by staying focused on our decorating power word "Quiet" along with our previously selected color story. Now we are able to make good sound decorating decisions.
