Unexpected and Intentional Distractions

As digital tablets and smart phones keep us busy and on the go, today's gospel reminds us of a struggle: when are we to set aside our busy calendars, duties, and to-do lists and simply rest in God's presence, listening to what God has to say to us? This tension mounts in our gospel Sunday as Jesus addresses Martha's busyness, worry, and distraction, juxtaposed with Mary's contemplation, focus, and desire to sit at the feet of the great teacher. But is "quietly sitting" even possible in our age of distractions? Perhaps we can find helpful advice in our first reading, as Abraham rests in the heat of the day. In that time of rest, he was ready to receive the three guests who came bearing the news that Sarah would have a son, fulfilling God's promise given years earlier. With the heat keeping him from moving on to other things, the guests had Abraham's undivided attention. These readings remind us how crucial it is to set aside time to spend with God. We might even wonder what sort of things Jesus was saying to Mary. Were they profound words, akin to the "mystery" the author of Colossians addresses in the epistle? Jesus was the person in whom God was pleased to dwell, that same one who is "the hope of glory."

The Pokmon Go craze comes to us from the Nintendo-owned franchise, which produced colorful cards and later video games, is back - this time luring young adults out of their apartments and into museums, parks and places of worship, including All Saints' Wolfeboro. Pokmon's newest iteration is a free augmented reality app that brings its now-adult fans' fantasies to life. The app uses players' phone GPS to locate where they are, then makes Pokmon appear on the phone screen in real-life locations so players can "catch" all 151 virtual creatures. The game's PokeStops and Gyms, are places where players can gather in the real world to capture and battle their virtual Pokmon. All Saints' is a "gym" so if you see guests wandering around with cell phones, welcome them. We are one of three "gyms" in Wolfeboro and if anyone would like the heads-up on the other two, just introduce them to the pastor!

Summer Fair
TOMORROW!
Saturday, July 16th

Fair co-chair Charlie Kellogg gives final instructions during last week's worship service.

Notes from Charlie and Lynne:
The big day is almost here. All seems to be going well thanks to the many dedicated volunteers who have devoted many hours to make the fair a success.

The tables were set up Thursday and we ask for all hands on deck. We will start moving the items on Saturday starting at 6:00 a.m. Please come when you can. Coffee and donuts will be supplied.

We have some yellow tee shirts for volunteers the day of the fair  but  please wear yellow if you can.

The weather seems to be cooperating (if you like hot) so let's pray for good weather.

See you all at the Fair!
Charlie & Lynne

ASSTG Summer Break
All Saints Strength Training Group (ASSTG) will not meet for the remainder of the summer. The group will resume in September.
How can I become a member of All Saints'?
How do I join the Episcopal Church?
Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out.

Becoming a part of a faith community means more than belonging to a particular set of persons meeting in a particular building on Sunday. Membership begins with Baptism. An infant or an adult baptized at All Saints' becomes a member here as well as a member of the full Body of Christ. Persons from other traditions who have already been baptized may become a member of All Saints' by having their membership transferred from their church of baptism.

If Baptism is full membership into the Body of Christ, what is the rationale for Confirmation? Confirmation provides one full membership into the Episcopal Church. It is also required if one wishes to vote in a parish election, serve on a Vestry, or represent the parish at Diocesan Council. If you desire to become a member of All Saints', please contact the rector and consider new member inquiry gatherings 8:00-8:45 a.m. or 11:15-noon on Sundays, August 14 and 28th.

Wolfeboro Reads
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Starting on Tuesday, September 13th, join Pastor Gina and Pastor Bill for discussion and sharing around a common read. We will meet each week (with some exceptions), from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Gathering Space at FCCW, 115 S. Main Street. We will spend a few weeks on each book that we read. To start, we have a chosen an award-winning book, also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by a journalist for the The Atlantic. It is written in memoir style, as letters to his teen-aged son, reflecting on the issues of race in America. All are welcome!
