Rector's Reflections
Who Are You?

Who do you identify with in the parable of the good Samaritan? This is part of what makes parables so powerful. Some days we read the story through the eyes of the priest or the Levite. Some days we feel like the Samaritan. And then there are those days when we are the man in the ditch. Some days you are the windshield and some days you are the bug, as the saying goes.
It is easy to miss the shocking nature of this parable if we start to think that this story only teaches us to imitate the Samaritan. The parable says so much more about God, our relationship to God, and the lengths to which God will go to reach out to us.

Through the image of the Samaritan, Jesus lifts up a surprising rescuer as an image of the God who relentlessly cares for those in need. Could it be that we are meant to identify not with the Samaritan or even the lawyer to whom Jesus speaks the parable, but rather with the man who is hopeless and left for dead? Could it be that Christ is the good Samaritan who embraces us with the tender compassion of God?

All of the sudden the parable is turned on its head. Jesus is not just giving us a comfortable morality tale reminding us to be nice, helpful, generous people. Instead Jesus is proclaiming the good news of the kingdom. God's grace comes to us through the cross. God's grace comes to us even-and especially-when we are at our worst, when we struggle in the depths and cry out for help. Even when we cannot or will not cry out, mercy and grace come into our lives through Jesus. So whether you are on the road or in the ditch, Jesus even now is coming for you. [Sundays and Seasons, 2016]

In weeks like this when we struggle with the news of terror deaths in Iraq and gun deaths in Louisiana and Minnesota we cry out and need the mercy and grace of God found in Word and Sacrament. See you in worship on Sunday.

Comfort and Peace,
Bill+

Countdown to the Summer Fair
Saturday July 16th
One week to go!
Peter and Susie Walker are standing with the new Summer Fair banner that they donated to the church.  The previous banner was showing its 55 years of age.

Notes from Charlie and Lynne:
It seems to be running as a well oiled machine but there is much work to be done. The 55th annual fair is one week from this Saturday, July 16. Much volunteer help is required to make this a success. If you can help and have not signed up with a committee, please let Charlie or Lynne know you are available to help.

The tents are schedule to be set up on Wednesday the 13th. Please check with your committee chairman to find when help might be needed.

A feature item for the silent auction is an inflatable rubber boat with a Evinrude motor. We will also be offering an older 470 dingy sailboat with trailer. It is in good structural condition but needs a lot of tender loving care. If you might be interested call Charlie Kellogg 293-8520.
ASSTG Summer Break
All Saints Strength Training Group (ASSTG) will not meet for the remainder of the summer. The group will resume in September.
How can I become a member of All Saints'?
How do I join the Episcopal Church?
Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out.

Becoming a part of a faith community means more than belonging to a particular set of persons meeting in a particular building on Sunday. Membership begins with Baptism. An infant or an adult baptized at All Saints' becomes a member here as well as a member of the full Body of Christ. Persons from other traditions who have already been baptized may become a member of All Saints' by having their membership transferred from their church of baptism.

If Baptism is full membership into the Body of Christ, what is the rationale for Confirmation? Confirmation provides one full membership into the Episcopal Church. It is also required if one wishes to vote in a parish election, serve on a Vestry, or represent the parish at Diocesan Council. If you desire to become a member of All Saints', please contact the rector and consider new member inquiry gatherings 8:00-8:45 am or 11:15-noon on Sundays, August 14 and 28th.

New Member Gatherings in August, Welcoming during the Bishop's Visit, September 11th.
Education for Ministry
Education For Ministry (EFM) is a 4 year program of theological study for lay people, which requires a commitment a year at a time. The group meets for a 3 hour session each week, and there is a bit of reading between each session. EFM gives people a solid grounding in the Bible and Church History, and also the ability to make connections between your faith and what you do in the world.

The core of the program is doing theological reflection, which integrates tradition (scripture, hymnody, church writings), culture (movies, issues, news) belief/position (what we understand to be true in our lives) and action/experience - how is our behavior impacted by all of this.
