Rector's Reflections
Lifting the Veil

The transfiguration is frustrating for disciples-past and present-who long for an unmediated experience of God. Jesus' glory is revealed, and then, just as suddenly, a cloud descends and the vision fades. And even though Paul contrasts the Christian's experience of God with Moses's veiled experience of God, he notes that we see the glory of the Lord "as though reflected in a mirror" (2 Cor. 3:18). Even with unveiled faces, we don't see directly, or even clearly. Even when God is revealed in shining glory, much remains veiled and hidden.

As he witnesses Jesus' transfiguration, Peter's understanding remains veiled; ours does too. The glimpses we get of God's glory-through the veil or reflected in the mirror-are expectation-shattering, alarming, overwhelming, and awesome. The love of God shines too brightly to view directly, and yet we do have the privilege of directly experiencing that love in baptism, in communion, in service to God, and in relationship with God's creation and our neighbors in need. The veils we contend with daily are the barriers that prevent us from truly loving those neighbors, caring for creation, and seeing the shining face of Jesus in the faces of people who are different, hungry, difficult, enemy, invisible, or poor. God is always revealed in ways that surprise and confuse us, whether shining on the mountaintop or dying on the cross. [Sundays and Seasons 2016]

This Sunday before Ash Wednesday marks the Transfiguration of Our Lord, because this event marked a transition in Jesus' ministry in which he "set his face to go to Jerusalem" (Luke 9:51), where he would die. In Jesus' transfiguration, we are assured that Jesus is the hope of the ages. In Jesus the one who fulfilled the Law given through Moses, the one dreamed of by the prophets, and of whom Elijah is the greatest, we rejoice. We rejoice in Jesus, the one whose glory shone even when confronted with the cross.

This Sunday we will explore what the veils that separate, distance, or cloud our experience of God are in our lives. Join us in worship as we too are transfigured by God's Word and Sacraments weaving together our story with God's.

February 9 = Primary Election Day = Bake Sale
Primary voters are hungry. Please help make the ECW's election day bake sale a success by contributing your cookies, muffins, breads, or soup. Food can be dropped off the day before clearly marked for the bake sale. Volunteers to work the bake sale are also needed. Please contact Gail Holm if you can help out.

As with voting, please bake early and often.
New Parking Lot Lights
A small part of our capital project list was improving the safety of our parking lot with new, energy efficient lighting. The picture above shows the impact of the new lights that use as much energy as the 150 watt 3-way bulb in your living room. Thanks to our Junior Warden Andy Milligan for his ongoing leadership as "supervisor of our capital projects checklist"!

Save the Date: Lay Leadership Institute May 6-7, 2016
The Lay Leadership Institute is our annual opportunity to learn the basics of vestry life, how the Episcopal Church works in New Hampshire, or to explore our call to Lay Ministry in other and more advanced content.  Past seminars have included a Wardens' Roundtable and seminars on Leadership in the Church; Expanding Communication; and Listening Skills.

The Institute will again offer the threshold Basics Course, which is essential to lay leadership in the congregation. The Basic Course especially welcomes new and continuing vestry members. Those who have already taken the Basics Course will have a choice of four day-long seminars:
  • Bishop Hirschfeld will lead an exploration of liturgy in a seminar of interest to all persons who worship in church but especially to those who participate in defined roles as eucharistic ministers, altar guild members, lectors, ushers, choristers, acolytes, crucifers.
  • A seminar on learning the art of narrative will train participants in storytelling, a skill that helps us made sense of the life we live and offer that life to others. The seminar will be led by Laura Simoes, Missioner of Communication, and Judith Esmay, Canon for Lay Leadership.
  • Presenters from Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light will illuminate issues of sustainability and assist church leaders in the greening of church properties and practices. Their presentation will include information about calculating energy costs and sources of funding assistance.
  • Our annual Wardens' Roundtable will focus this year on the conduct and potential of mutual minister reviews, in exercises led by Hannah Anderson, Canon to the Ordinary and seasoned guide to critically important mutual ministry reviews in many grateful congregations.

More information and registration for these events will be forthcoming shortly.
