Rector's Reflections
Unbinding the Living

On All Saints Sunday we remember loved ones who have been laid in the tomb. We know the acute grief of Mary, Martha, and Jesus. We know the reality of death that lies so close. We know that at any moment the phone call could come with news we dread. We live forever in the shadow of death.

At the same time, we also know the little deaths that take place every day. We know the daily disappointments, the betrayal of a friend, a failure at work, a difficult and tumultuous marriage, the loneliness and pain of one longing for something more from life. Beyond that there are the near-constant reminders that much of this world is far from God's kingdom. How easy it is to look and see poverty and injustice, disease and despair all around. Like Lazarus, we are bound tightly in death's clothes: grief, disappointment, hopelessness.

Yet Jesus speaks the last word for us: "Unbind him, and let him go" (John 11:44). This promise is bursting with resurrecting life. This word is spoken by the one who became human and was put in a tomb, but broke through the pervasive stench of death. In the waters of the font, we hear our God speak this word to us. Lifting us out of the waters, God frees us from the binding rags of death and dresses us in the royal clothing of Christ. At the table, we feast with the God in whom we have waited, the God who swallows up death forever. The last word is not death, but life as a beloved child of God.

Beloveds clothed in the righteousness of Christ, we as God's people are called forth from the grave. Fellow saints rush forward to remove the rotting grave clothes. Together the people of God celebrate the hope and promise of resurrection, rising each new day to joyfully serve in the name of the one who is beyond death, Jesus our Savior.

By the witness of the saints, we are shown the hope of our calling as followers of Jesus. On Sunday as resurrection people we'll honor the saints who have impacted our lives as we write their names in our book of remembrance, as we offer prayers of thanksgiving, and as we light candles to reflect the light and love of Jesus they share. See you in worship!

In Christian Sympathy
Trusting in the promise of the resurrection, we remember Andrew and Jonathon Walpole in our prayers as they grieve the death of their mother Neda who died Tuesday. Pray for the Holy Spirit to comfort all in these days of need and loss, and help us to commend her to God's merciful care. A memorial service is planned for the end of November and details will be shared as they are finalized.

Eternal God, you gave Neda a new birth in baptism and entrusted her to us to know and to love. As we thank you for the life we shared, help us now to release her to your mighty keeping. Bring us all to that day when we shall stand in your presence with all your saints in light eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

EPPN: Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to learn about domestic violence and recommit ourselves to challenging all forms of violence in our communities.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, "Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional abuse." Domestic violence affects all people regardless of gender, age group, religious group, or economic level. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, domestic violence affects nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men.

As people of faith, we are committed to opposing all forms of violence. Our churches are well positioned to "make active and ongoing responses to problems of sexual or domestic violence in their communities" (GC resolution 2000). As we mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we offer resources and steps for action:
  • Educate yourself about domestic violence, dynamics of abuse, and ways to seek help.
  • Familiarize yourself with Episcopal policy concerning domestic violence. General Convention resolutions that address domestic violence can be found here. They include encouraging educational programs in congregations and declaring opposition to domestic violence at all levels of society. Further, we are called by our Baptismal Covenant to "respect the dignity of every human being."
  • Spread awareness in your community. One way to do this is to partner with a local domestic or sexual violence center and host aSunday forum to discuss domestic violence and commit to solutions.
These steps can be seen as a beginning to taking action as a community against domestic violence.
