Blessing of the Animals this Sunday
The commemoration of Francis of Assisi falls on a Sunday this year and we will host a Blessing of the Animals at both 8:00 and 10:00 am services. Pets and animals are important to so many people and this commemoration and the practice of blessing animals provides opportunities for us as Christians to consider how faith informs our relationship to animals. All pets and animals are welcome, but some pets may not be able to leave the house because of fear or aggression, while other pets may be ill, and others may have died. For those that cannot be in worship on October 4th, please bring a photo and/or arrange for an at home blessing with Pastor Bill.
Rector's Reflections
Who Would Jesus Bless Today?

Many Bibles include a heading before the latter part of Sunday's gospel reading (Mark 10:13-16) that says something like "Blessing the Children" or "Jesus Welcomes the Children." In reading such a heading, we might begin to imagine a sentimental scene in which Jesus is surrounded by cute, adorable children. When we think about children being blessed in our churches today, we might imagine children gathering around the altar or at the front of the worship space for a children's time, in which a worship leader would say a prayer with them and give them a blessing. The parents and others may also be gathered just behind the children, smiling in adoration of these young ones.

However, we cannot view the scene from Mark's gospel with only our modern understanding of the role and place of children in society. The life of many children in North America is one of relative privilege, with carefree days in which they often experience the care and love of grown-ups. Jesus, by bringing the children to him, identifies himself with those who were among the most vulnerable and helpless in society. In ancient times, children often were treated like property. They had few protections from those who would treat them badly. But Jesus came into the world for ones such as these children. Who, in our communities, is in the place of the children of ancient times? As Christ's church, do we provide a place of welcome and care for the most vulnerable and weak in our society?

Stewardship Season for All The Saints
"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." [2 Corinthians 9:7-8]

Stewardship is centered around the reality and presence of Jesus Christ in our lives and in the world. It involves a careful and caring use of our spiritual and physical resources. Stewardship is what we do after coming to belief in Jesus. Stewardship is a natural, loving, and joyful response to want to grow in a personal relationship with Jesus. Living a Christ-like life happens by practicing stewardship of self (growing and maturing in our faith), stewardship of community (service to our human communities and physical environment), and stewardship of resources (gifts of time, talent, and money). In a Christian life, all of what we do is stewardship. Stewardship is present in every activity of our faith community, in ministry, music, outreach, worship, prayer, and our life together. Ministry at All Saints' isn't just about caring for the spiritually hungry and homeless today, but also about preserving its piece of history for future generations.

Over the next three weeks we will continue to focus on sharing God's blessings with Church Chats each week in worship including: Stewardship of the Earth on September 27th, Stewardship of Music on October 4th, and Stewardship of Ministry on October 11th. We will affirm our commitment as stewards called to share God's blessings at one worship service at 9:00 am on October 18th.

"Stewardship of the Earth"
If you missed our services last week, you may want to view Church Chat #2 with Phil Wasmuth "Stewardship of the Earth." You can find it on youtube athttps://youtu.be/Rx0qF38-688   This is the second of a four-part series focusing on sharing God's blessings.

Message from the Steering Committee
Dear Members of the All Saints' Congregation:

The last two Sunday's we've heard explanations about Stewardship of Our Worship Space and Stewardship of the Earth.  Those presentations are available to watch online by youtube via our church web site.

This Sunday, our Director of Music, Holly Simons, will give a presentation at both services pertaining to our Stewardship of Music.

On October 11th, Don Holm will give a presentation at both services pertaining to our Stewardship in support of our operating budget. Pledges will be received for the operating budget and capital campaign on Oct. 18th. We will have one service at 9 am on that date.

The committee members for the capital campaign, in addition to me, are Beth Smith, Susie Walker, Don Holm, Christy Parker, Jane Milligan, and  Rev. Bill Petersen. Our mission as outlined by our vestry will be completed when the capital campaign drive ends.

The vestry will develop a timeline to implement Stewardship of our Worship Space, Stewardship of the Earth, and Stewardship of Music. Input will be needed and sought from the congregation on how best to implement the goals for these areas. Beth Smith, in her presentation on Stewardship of Our Worship Space, remarked that the pews will be painted and new carpet will be installed in the sanctuary. Input from the congregation will be important in deciding the type and color of carpet, color of paint for the pews, etc. The Stevens Room will be changed. No decisions have been made, and again input will be vital, for what that room will look like.

We are planning on having an energy audit, and input will be needed from the congregation as to how best to implement the recommendations from that audit.

A committee to study the feasibility of using solar panels has been meeting for several months. Those committee members are Doug Smithwood, Lee White, Don Holm, Dan Lake, Susan Fuller, Andy Milligan, and Rev. Bill Petersen. Our Diocese has offered to match the cost of the panels. The committee has met with our legislators about creating legislation that will give rebates to churches and small non profits to help reduce the cost of the solar panels. Solar panel installation will be delayed a year to give that legislation a chance to become law. When the conservation is completed and the solar panels are installed, our energy costs will be reduced about 80 to 85%. Members of that committee can answer questions in regards to the solar panels.

This week the members of Lord and Tailor, whose ministry is so important to our community, pledged a generous gift to our campaign. I am happy to report that the capital campaign drive is going very well as all of the members of the vestry, steering committee, and a few others have pledged over half of the amount needed, ($220,000) to complete the capital campaign.

I know that I speak for the other members of the steering committee that this has been a wonderful experience for us. The members of the committee would be happy to meet with members of our congregation and  answer any questions.

Sincerely,
Phil Wasmuth, Steering Committee

All Saints' Memorial Book
We have a beautifully crafted leather book for all memorial gifts given to our faith community. Unfortunately, the only names presently listed are those saints who contributed to the original building we continue to be blessed with. If you, a family member, or friend have a memorial gift that should be noted, please contact Donna in the office, send an e-mail to allsaints@metrocast.net, or share with Lorraine Holley who has graciously agreed to update the memorials book.

Sharing God's Blessings:
You Are Generous
No one wants to be stingy, but generosity sometimes gets written off as something only millionaires and sweet grandmotherly figures can truly master. Our Christian values highlight generosity as a key virtue of faith that we can all practice. "Extravagant generosity" is one of the practices that guides our move toward following Jesus and being mission-minded givers.
Life Ministries

All Saints is going to be featuring a food monthly that is in need for the Life Ministries Food Pantry. We welcome any and all donations of non-perishable items. October's food is mac & cheese. Please place donations in the basket in the narthex. Thank you for all donations!

Caregivers of Southern Carroll County

You can also choose if you wish to stay local or drive longer distances. If you are interested, please contact Shirley Bentley at 569-3714.
ChIPs 2015
All Saints youth will again be shopping this year for this important program. For those of you not familiar with this program, members of our congregation donate indicating CHIPS in the memo portion of their check and then a team from All Saints visits KMART in Rochester (since they give non profits 10% more than actual shopping amount). The group shops for gifts according the following age groups: birth to 1; ages 2 to 4; ages 5 to 7; ages 8-11; and ages 12-15.

Christmas comes to children of incarcerated parents every year with your help: you and sponsors like you who donate gifts and funds to make it happen! Both the families and the incarcerated parents themselves are deeply grateful for the opportunity that the ChIPs program affords them. The prisons count the number of gifts needed for each age and gender group. Volunteers collect your gift donations, and use your monetary donations to supplement the gifts provided. Once the presents are sorted, they're brought to the prisons, and the inmates get the chance to choose one gift for each child on their list. Usually the inmate is a parent . Sometimes a grandparent. Sometimes even a big brother or sister.

Children of prison inmates can live lonely lives. It's easy to believe that a parent you never see just doesn't care. Inmates also find themselves feeling isolated and abandoned, unable to provide for or to be a part of their families. Being able to offer their children a gift at the Christmas visit gives the inmates an opportunity for connection, for a sliver of normalcy in their family relations. Studies have shown that parolees are significantly more likely to integrate back into society if they are able to maintain relationships with their families. The ChIPs program creates positive experiences on which to build a foundation for those relationships. At the Men's Prison in Concord, once the gift is chosen , volunteers wrap it. The prison then throws a party! The family visits, and the inmates are able to give presents to their children. The ChIPs program also includes an age-appropriate book to go with each gift, helping to promote literacy within this sometimes underprivileged population.
