Rector's Reflections
God Is Partial

Again and again throughout biblical history, God is partial to caring for the poor, the weak, and the outcast. Which is why, perhaps, Jesus' response to the Syrophoenician woman takes us by surprise: "Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs" (Mark 7:27).

The Syrophoenician woman acts in faith. She engages Jesus with what she believes to be true about him: that through him God's mercy will extend even to her. Despite the distinctions that separate them (including race, gender, and religion), she believes Jesus is a Savior who has the power to heal all people and that she, although not a Jew, is a member of the household of God.

The second reading, from James, reminds hearers then and now that the Christian community's actions are to be shaped by God's partiality. God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith. While the world values the rich, the poor are God's own treasure, made honored guests and royal heirs through baptism. The community is called to a partiality based on God's values, not the world's.

The waters of baptism wash away all distinctions. Like streams breaking forth in the desert, these waters surprise us with mercy in unexpected places. These waters open our eyes, unstop our ears, and loose our tongues to see, hear, and speak God's partiality for the poor, the weak, and the outcast. Baptized into Christ's death and resurrection, the Spirit fills us with faith-a faith active in showing mercy that knows no limits.

Around the table, rich and poor, haughty and humble, all who gather receive a feast fit for the family of God. All are honored and all are fed, because the Lord is the maker of them all.

End Racism Sunday, September 6, 2015
Our brothers and sisters in the African Methodist Episcopal Church have called all Christians to participate in a "Confession, Repentance and Commitment to End Racism" Sunday, to be observed on Sept. 6th. Their ecumenical partners in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the National Council of Churches and Churches Uniting in Christ, among others, in recognizing this moment to come together as God's children will mark the day as well.

Sharing God's Blessings:
What is the Truth?
The truth is this. We were created in the image of a self-giving God. God didn't need us, but our very creation-the creation of all things-was an act of overflowing generosity. We don't deserve anything. The fact that we have a single moment of life, the fact that we have breath, and food, and families, is because God is generous. And God is so extravagantly generous that he not only gives us being and sustains us in being, not only gives us lives and homes and families and jobs, but even gave us himself in Jesus Christ, and gave us salvation on the cross and new life in the empty tomb.

From the Music Corner
Two items of note this week:

1)  What a wonderful Hymn Sunday we shared last week! THANK YOU to all who submitted their favorite hymns, and for "raising the rafters" by singing WELL throughout our entire service!  (We were definitely "praying twice"! :0) We now have a database of your selections, and I'm hopeful we can, and will, do this type of service again.

2)  On a personal note,  I'm grateful for the opportunity to introduce you to our daughter and her husband this coming Sunday, September 6th. Please welcome Rachel (Simons) and Vitali Dyachenko as they greet us and share a bit about their mission work in Eastern Europe.  They serve in the country of Moldova with the mission Word Made Flesh, working among children of the poor and marginalized in the capital of Chisinau (Keesh-ee-now).  They are Stateside for a few weeks, and thankful for an opportunity to greet our parish and share a bit of their mission and work. They will have a table in both coffee hours, where you may greet them, learn  about their ministry, and offer donations for lovely cards made by the children, which go directly to support the onsite work. The website www.wordmadeflesh.org helps you grasp the vision of these communities being the "hands and feet of Jesus" among the poorest of the poor, in countries like Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Sierra Leone, India, Romania, Moldova and most recently Los Angeles, California.

Blessings in your Labor Day weekend and the month of September!

Soli Deo Gloria!

Susan Fuller's Climate Ride

I am once again riding in the Climate Ride, this year from Bar Harbor to Boston, Sept. 17-21.  My reasons for riding are many including raising awareness of the critical issues facing the health of our planet, economy and communities; raising funds for Global Awareness, Local Action, our local sustainability organization; and love of being active out-of-doors.  In addition to raising money and awareness, I will be engaging with others in similar work and helping to build a national network of supporters.

So many of you supported me last year that I was able to raise over $4000.  This year I am asking for your support again to try to meet or exceed this goal. The easiest way to donate is to visit Climate Ride and hit the DONATE button.  Search for my name and you will land on my fund raising page.  All donations, no matter the size are much appreciated.  If you would like to support me, it would be most helpful if you could donate before September 11 as I am somewhat behind on hitting my marks this year.  Thank you again for all the ways you support this community. Sincerely, Susan Fuller Questions? Email me at sfuller5277@yahoo.com
