The Greatest Bread is Love

Jesus uses the image of bread to demonstrate that, even compared to all the great things God has done before, God's greatest miracle is in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus, the bread of life, is a greater miracle than the manna God sent in the dessert (Exod. 16:14), greater than the bread the angel brought to restore Elijah (1 Kings 19:4-8), greater even than the loaves Jesus had just multiplied to feed a crowd of more than five thousand people (John 6:1-14)! In Jesus, God gives bread for the journey not only for this life, but also into eternal life.

We're so familiar with this image that it loses some of its original power. But the claim Jesus is making here is a radical one and a dangerous one. To Jesus' original audience, his claim to be the bread from heaven, the Son of God, must have sounded like outrageous blasphemy. "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?" they say. "How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'" (John 6:42). Who does this guy think he is?

Jesus' message is both outrageous and outrageously comforting: anyone who eats this bread will live forever. The Son of God meets us in this life and gives us real and certain hope for eternal life. Normal bread is amazing in its own right; manna is miraculous. But Jesus Christ is the true bread and the greatest miracle of all. "Taste and see that the Lord is good" (Ps. 34:8).

Welcomed in the Waters of Baptism

"Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's body, the Church. The bond which God establishes at Baptism is indissoluble." (Book of Common Prayer, page 298). This week we welcome Sophia Rose Goncalves into these life giving waters at our 10:00 am worship service. Sophia is the granddaughter of Jennifer Ribeiro and Antonio Goncalves of Alton, Nina Botta of Center Barnstead and Dexter White of Farmington are the Godparents.

Pam Liedtke Memorial

Pam Liedtke's Memorial Service is at All Saints on Saturday, August 22nd at 3:00 pm.

Welcoming Members to the All Saints' Community

The Book of Common Prayersays that the duty of all Christians is to: "follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray and give for the spread of the kingdom of God." (BCP p. 856) If a someone who has been gathering with the people of All Saints' Wolfeboro, you have not been recognized and formally welcomed during worship, you are invited to do so through reaffirmation of baptism.

Members are welcomed into the Episcopal Church by the Bishop through confirmation and reception during the Bishop visitation at All Saints' (annual or biennial) or arrangements can be made during a weekly noon Eucharist at Diocesan House in Concord or another Episcopal Congregation in New Hampshire.  As the Bishop will not visit All Saints' for worship until 2017, please speak with me if you would like to be welcomed through confirmation or reception during the next year.

Baptized Members are welcomed into All Saints' Church by the Rector through reaffirmation of baptismal promises: with a question-and-answer version of the statement of faith that is the Apostles' Creed and adds five questions regarding how we, as Christians, are called to live out our faith (BCP pp. 304-305). New members will be recognized during worship on Sunday, August 30th at 9:00 am (only one service that day) through reaffirmation of baptism. Please let our Rector Bill or Parish Administrator Donna me know if you would like to be welcomed on the  30th.

The Summer of Bread Sermon Series: Jesus, Maslow, and Bread

This week we focus on Love/Belonging: Bread Is Relationship

August 9, 2015 - John 6:35, 41-51 - Bread is Relationship [Love/Belonging]: I am the bread of life, the living bread which comes down from heaven. No one comes unless the Father draws, and I will raise you up on the last day.

August 16, 2015 - John 6:51-58 - Bread is Hope [Esteem]: Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them. The one who eats this bread will live forever.

August 23, 2015 - John 6:56-69 - Bread is Living Beyond Myself [Self-actualization]: Eat my flesh for eternal life. This is a difficult teaching; who can accept it? Does this bother you? Do you also wish to go away? Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life...

Starting Home Meeting

Please come and support Veterans Housing. Meeting is Monday, August 17th at 10 am at the County Building in Ossipee, on the 2nd floor, at the end closest to Mountainview Community. Folks will be car pooling from All Saints' parking lot at 9 am. The date for this meeting was originally August 10th but has been rescheduled to August 17th.

Sharing God's Blessings:
We are Getting Stingier

We Christians only give 2.43 percent of our income per capita. We gave one third more of our wealth during the Great Depression. In fact, data shows unambiguously that in the past forty years, as American Christians have grown wealthier and wealthier, our debt has grown larger and larger, and our giving smaller and smaller. As one observer writes, "For Christians in the richest nation in history to be giving only 2.43 percent of their income to their churches is not just stinginess, it is biblical disobedience."

Seeking Solar Shepherds

Did you know that we have a church committee actively looking into using solar panels to meet most of the church's electric energy needs? We also have many church members who already producing electricity at their homes from solar energy.

If you have a solar array at your house we would like to invite you to be a "solar shepherd". Please bring in a picture of your house with its solar panels. It would be great to have your family in the picture also. We would like to post your picture on our Creation Care display during coffee hours in late July. Beware, if you give us a picture for our display, people will want to talk to you about it and you will automatically become a Solar Shepherd.

Please give your picture to either Andy Milligan at the 8:00 service or Don Holm at the 10:00 service.

Mum Sales

If you saw the huge and beautiful mums offered by the Eastern Lakes Region Housing Coalition the past two years, then you will want to order some for your own garden this Fall. These are New Hampshire grown and will be ready for pick up right here at All Saints' on the morning of Saturday, September 5. These gorgeous plants are the same price as last year and come in four beautiful Fall colors. Proceeds from the sale support the educational and advocacy programs of ELRHC.  To order your plants, contact Carolyn Sundquist, Louise Graham, or Jane Milligan.  Order forms are also available on the bulletin board in the undercroft. This year if you live in Wolfeboro or Tuftonboro, your mums can be delivered right to your door.

Vestry Ministry Team Needs

Your vestry has four ministry teams it is looking for you as a saint of All Saints' to consider serving on:

* Hospitality Team - The group that welcomes, invites and coordinates fellowship opportunities to welcome one another and build community through coffee hours and events across the congregation.

* Missions Team - The group that educates, informs, advocates for and motivates the congregation about mission outreach projects, including recommendations to the vestry about disbursements from our mission fund.

* Worship Team - The group that serves in an advisory capacity to the rector and minister of music to provide meaningful worship opportunities for the congregation and community from the scheduling and style of worship, worship space, to recruitment and training of special ministers of worship and the assistance of Christian education regarding worship.

* Altar Guild - This group prepares the altar for services, cleans altar pieces and linens.

If you have gifts and interest in these vital support ministries, God just might be calling you to share them. The vestry will approve new* participation in these teams, so if you are interested please speak to any vestry member.

*[Hospitality has a number of current people serving, but would love to add more]
