Ready to Bear Witness

Where does power come from? The usual answers-family connections, reputation, possessions-are all rejected in this Sunday's reading from Mark's gospel. Jesus' power is not only independent of his family connection-it is hindered by it. While it isn't entirely clear why the people of Nazareth reject Jesus, the fact that they do may sound familiar to us. How often do we find exactly what we expect when we encounter something new? How open are we, really, to the possibility that God's power might come from an unexpected corner? The first part of Sunday's reading suggests that even miracles take two things: both divine power and willing witnesses.

Perhaps Jesus sends his disciples out stripped of their possession precisely so that they are ready to witness to God's power in a new way. They go without any of the usual trappings of security or wealth, with no guarantee that their ministry will be received. In fact, Mark reminds us a few verses later (Mark 6:14-28) just how hostile the world can be to receiving the proclamation of the kingdom of God. John the Baptist will lose his life because of Herod's resistance to repentance. Nevertheless, Jesus' teaching continues to astound, and the word continues to spread.

The willingness to bear witness, even when we are not certain of answered prayer or mission success, is a theme that unites all this day's readings. Even the Psalm, in its simple gaze of faith, invites us to let go of results in favor of relationship. Paul's sometimes confusing logic about spiritual experiences becomes clear as he sums up God's word to him: "My grace is sufficient for you. . . ." That is a powerful word, which can make almost any experience an opportunity to witness to Christ's power.

Sharing God's Blessings:
Commit Intentionally

Make a statement about your intent and follow through. As members of the body of Christ, we are asked to make a commitment of our time, talent, and resources as a faithful response to God and as a statement of our support of God's work. "...arrange in advance for this bountiful gift that you have promised." 2 Corinthians 9:5

Summer Fair July 18 - UPDATE!

With the Fourth of July behind us, the countdown to the Fair begins in earnest. July 18th is less than two weeks away! Sorting and pricing continues in the undercroft. Donations are still being accepted but will stop on Tuesday, July 14 to allow items to be organized by Fair Day. The tents are expected to be put up on Wednesday, July 15 (Weather permitting). The plan is to set up the tables under the tent on Thursday with rain date for Friday. Many strong arms will be needed! It is not too late to help with last minute sorting and to work on Fair Day. If you have time available, please contact the Fair Chairs.

Bake Table - The fair is quickly approaching. Please consider your contribution to the Bake Table. You can start baking and freezing now. Also jam and jellies and homemade baked beans and granola are also popular. The sky is the limit. Any questions, please contact Anne Hunt 569-5650.

Episcopal Bishops Make History Again...

On Saturday (June 27), during a private meeting at St. Mark's Cathedral in downtown Salt Lake City, they elected Bishop Michael Curry as the first African-American presiding bishop of the 2.5 million-member faith. Curry won in a landslide vote in a race against three other candidates. The vote came nearly a decade after the bishops chose their first female leader.

Leading up to Saturday's selection, Curry who has served as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina since 2000, said he envisioned a church committed to being part of the "Jesus movement." He said he would focus on evangelism and acts of service, along with a "churchwide spiritual revival." "In this mission moment of the church's life," he said, "the primary role of the presiding bishop must be CEO in another sense: Chief Evangelism Officer, to encourage, inspire and support us all to claim the calling of the Jesus movement."

Curry, 62, spent 12 years as rector of St. James Church in Baltimore before his election as bishop of the N.C. Diocese. He and his wife, Sharon, have two grown daughters, Rachel and Elizabeth. He will succeed Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, the faith's first female presiding bishop, who completes her nine-year term on November 1.

Thanks, Saints

To our dear friends at All Saints' We want to tell you all how much your support meant to us during what has been probably the most stressful time in our lives. Your cards, notes, calls, hugs and meals lifted us up and we are sure all of your prayers could not have gone unnoticed. Though he still has much therapy ahead, our son Zack is progressing daily and we have hope for a full recovery. We are blessed to be part of this community.

With love, Gail and Don Holm
