Rector's Reflections

The Gospel this week describes how as the disciples set out together in a boat with a sleeping Jesus, a great windstorm arose so that the boat became swamped. As we, the saints of All Saints' Wolfeboro set out in mission together in the ship of Christ's church, we have and will encounter many storms. The elements of chaos always seem to wreak havoc in our lives, communities, and in the church-and we become terrified. Though Jesus is present, the disciples then and we ourselves too tend to wonder and worry about his care and power. We too tend to cry out: "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" Jesus' presence seems too far away, too sleepy or weak to help us, even though it is exactly in and through vulnerable weakness that Jesus shows his almighty power. Jesus wakes at the disciples' cries and rebukes the wind and waves-they are no match for his command. The terrifying calm that follows demonstrates his divine power over all the chaos that continually threatens us. And we find ourselves awe-struck before the living God who has met us in our weakness and yet overcome it.

Last week one of our youngest noticed Jesus hanging on the cross and wondered who it was, and if he would fall off! Thankfully, Jesus who sleeps in the boat is the same Jesus who hangs on the cross, seemingly helpless. Yet the helpless one is none other than the all-powerful Lord God. "Who then is this?" but the Lord of all! The God who in the beginning brought order to the chaotic face of the deep now in Christ brings peace as we face the storm. So why are we afraid? Have we still no faith in this helpless Lord who is our only help?

We will sing a song called "Calm to the Waves" this week. It is a new hymn (2002) written by Mary Lousie Bringle and it simple captures our fear and the power of Jesus in the face of all the storms in our lives:

Calm to the waves. Calm to the wind.

Jesus whispers, "Peace, be still."

Balm to our hearts. Fears at an end.

In stillness, hear his voice.

Sharing God's Blessings:
Share Abundantly

We are called to respond and share as abundantly as we have received. The purpose of these gifts is for the benefit of the community of God. We give to build up the body of Christ. We use and share our gifts for the benefits of all. "...and God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything you, you may share abundantly in every good work." 2 Corinthians 9:8

Good News - God Surprises!

The vestry has been discerning who might replace Don Holm who resigned his office as Senior Warden due to family issues the past two months. This week the vestry met and we remembered and gave thanks for Bishop Rob's five practices of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire: 1.) We show up, 2.) We tell the story, 3.) We splash water, 4.) We share food, and 5.) God surprises, particularly how god surprises when we learned that Don Holm was ready to resume his office as our Senior Warden. The vestry voted unanimously to make it official. We continue to pray for Don, Gail and their family and give thanks for the surprises of God!

Vestry Ministry Team Needs

Your vestry has three ministry teams it is looking for you as a saint of All Saints' to consider serving on:

  • Hospitality Team - The group that welcomes, invites and coordinates fellowship opportunities to welcome one another and build community through coffee hours and events across the congregation.
  • Missions Team - The group that educates, informs, advocates for and motivates the congregation about mission outreach projects, including recommendations to the vestry about disbursements from our mission fund.
  • Worship Team - The group that serves in an advisory capacity to the rector and minister of music to provide meaningful worship opportunities for the congregation and community from the scheduling and style of worship, worship space, to recruitment and training of special ministers of worship and the assistance of Christian education regarding worship.

If you have gifts and interest in these vital support ministries, God just might be calling you to share them. The vestry will approve new* participation in these teams, so if you are interested please speak to any vestry member. *[Hospitality has a number of current people serving, but would love to add more]

Building and Grounds Needs
Pick-up Truck Adventurer & Painters Needed

We have a couple of needs that if you are interested, please contact our Junior Warden Andy Milligan at handyandy@metrocast.net , or our Parish Administrator Donna Young at allsaints@metrocast.net:

  • The vestry has approved the purchase of a new metal donation bin for Lord and Tailor, but is is need of saving the $600 delivery charge-so if you have (or could borrow) a pick-up truck, are traveling to or through northern New Jersey, or just are looking for a bit of a road trip adventure, God just might be calling you!
  • The main All Saints' building has 5 entry porticos that have weathered and need painting-so if you love the outdoors, have some time to give (or just want to get out of the house) and know which end of a paint brush to hold, God just might be calling you to paint one or more of these!
Summer Fair July 18

There has been a tremendous outpouring for this year's outreach Church Fair. We are most grateful for all of the skilled and willing workers who are sorting and pricing the items. If you have a particular area of interest or expertise, your help would be most welcome. A reminder: we cannot take donations of televisions, computers or upholstered furniture. Flyers to promote the sale are available during Coffee Hour. Please take a couple to post in your local post office or grocery store. Again with many thanks for everyone's support. Susie & Peter Walker 603-544-3199

Fair Angels. This effort covers pre-fair costs such as supplies, food, tents, etc. If you wish to contribute, please drop your check in the offering plate or at the church office, being sure to mark "Fair Angels" in the memo section. Beginning our fair with no debt is the best way to start! Thank you to all who have contributed already!

What's in Your Basket?

Raffle Baskets will again be a part of the Summer Fair. Please contact Jan Smith or Carolyn Sundquist if you would be able to donate a basket or if you need some ideas. There will also be sign-up sheets on the board in the undercroft. In order to start selling raffle tickets before the fair it would be helpful to have the baskets as soon as possible - by 6/28 if possible. Many thanks to those who gave so generously in previous years!

Starting Point

On Sunday, June 28 at 1PM All Saints member Steve Day will be directing/producing a short TV ad with Robert Pierpont for Starting Home Veterans Transitional Services at the old Mountain View Nursing Home (located immediately behind the new nursing home at 93 Water Village Road, Ossipee NH). If you are a veteran and have no plans for a couple of hours Steve and Robert would love to have you there to show your support. If you still have your uniform from your service that would be great if you could wear it. If you can only find parts of it that's okay, too. And if you can't find/fit into any of it that's still fine. A veteran is still a veteran. You don't need to do anything other than show up and stand alongside our group's leadership for this noble cause. Starting Home is a non-profit 501(C)(3) committed to providing transitional housing for qualified homeless veterans.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 49,933 veterans are homeless on any given night. According to Harbor Homes, Inc in Nashua, NH, roughly 367 homeless citizens are in Carroll County alone and of that number approximately 37 are veterans, and that number is rising. Since Carroll County still does not have a homeless shelter the actual numbers are difficult to quantify however the Friends Of Veterans Vt and NH (www.friendsofveteransvtnh.org) estimates 9.5% of the total veteran population in New Hampshire is homeless on any given night.

You can learn more about Starting Home at www.vethousecc.org. If you have any questions about the TV ad you can call Steve Day at 603-834-8751.
