Rector's Reflections

Promises, Promises

The story of God's relationship with God's people is a story of promises fulfilled. We hear about God's covenant with Sarah and Abraham in Sunday's Genesis reading and about its fulfillment in the New Testament texts. As Paul reminds us in Romans, we are the multitude of nations that were promised to Abraham; we are his descendants in faith. "Kings of peoples" (Gen. 17:16) descended from Sarah's offspring; Jesus Christ, the King of kings, is Lord of all through his death and resurrection.

From generation to generation, God is steadfast. No matter how many ages pass or how often we turn away, God remains faithful. This is the great hope of our faith-no matter how often we stray or how great our sin, God persists in loving us. Jesus Christ binds us to God through our baptism into his death. In worship-especially through confession, affirmation of baptism, and communion-we continually remember the lengths to which God goes to keep covenant with us. The promise of salvation extends even into the future, as the psalmist reminds us: Our children and our children's children will proclaim God's salvation to generations yet unborn.

Help Wanted

Pastor Bill is in need of someone for a small fabric project for Easter. If you sew or paint on fabric, please contact him at: pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com for details. Thanks!

Almost Time to Open Up the Bake Shop

With a winter bake sale scheduled for, March 10th, it is just about time to stoke up the oven, crockpot, and assorted creative culinary tools to shift into production. Needed are baked goods, soups, sandwiches, and lots of support to staff the tables on the big day. Please, remember to sign up as a helper or cook on the commitment sheet that will be posted on the undercroft bulletin board. Please contact Christy Parker if you wish to let me know directly how you wish to lend a hand, or if you have questions or suggestions.  Lorraine Crocker is also helping to coordinate the event.

You may contact me via phone: 569-9570 or e-mail.  In advance, we send along our thanks to any and all of you who plan on lending your hearts, and wonderful, diligent hands to make this another success!

Brought to my attention is a note to all bakers that baked treats that fly the fastest, a big hit with the bake table patrons are the ones that are labeled and packaged,  and are easy to grab (perhaps a nod to the fast food world . . . only much better) straight from the container!  Also, at this point, I think that we have the volunteer soup making niche already filled!

Sharing God's Blessings:
Why & How Do I Give?

Giving is a spiritual practice. Each of us is a child of God and a member of Christ's body in the Church. When you plan to give, you demonstrate your recognition and acceptance of your duty to God and to other people. Giving encourages our spiritual growth.

All Saints' has no membership fees or dues; instead we ask you to take part in the important, voluntary practice of giving. You are encouraged to give gratefully and from the heart-to give as God calls you to give, knowing that you are supporting our work together as All Saints' Church that touches so many lives in wonderful ways.

Lent Liturgy Notes

Lent is not a gloomy time, a sad time, or a depressing time for those who are remembering what God has done for them. Our self-examination, which reveals our sin, prepares us to recognize our need for God. Then we gather Sunday by Sunday in the liturgy where our story as the people of God reminds us that God has met and still meets our need. Our fasting and self-denial give us the resources with which we can join Christ in his struggle against evil and death. Joining with him in that struggle, we also join him in his victory.

This Lent our Book of Common Prayer Rite II Liturgy is supplemented by Prayers of the People and Confession from Daily Prayer for all Seasons 2014, Eucharistic Prayer 2 from Enriching Worship, the Angus Dei (Lamb of God)  at the breaking of the bread, and a new post-communion prayer: Merciful God, Accompany our journey through these forty days. Renew us in the gift of baptism, that we may provide for those who are poor, pray for those who are in need, fast from self-indulgence, and above all that we may find our treasure in the life of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

We Make the Road By Walking Together in Lent

Lenten Carbon Fast

This is the fifth year that Carbon Fast has been happening. Each day you will receive a message to fast from carbon as a Lenten discipline. Initiated by the UCC and endorsed by other denominations and faith groups, people of every Christian perspective - and people who are not Christians - have benefited from this opportunity to become more conscious and conscientious in their daily lives. We don't expect everyone to be able to do everything suggested; but serious consideration of each day's activity can raise people's awareness, inviting them to think more carefully about how their day to day living impacts the environment and make the changes they can.

New Members will be received Sunday, March 22nd

The Rt. Rev. A. Robert Hirschfeld will visit All Saints' on Sunday, March 22, 2015. During his visit any individuals who wish to officially become members of the church will be welcomed through: Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows, or the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Please review the various rites below and contact our rector: pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com if you wish to prepare for membership during February and March.

Confirmation: The sacramental rite in which the candidates "express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop" (BCP, p. 860). Those who were baptized at an early age and those baptized as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop are expected to make a mature public affirmation of their faith, recommit themselves to the responsibilities of their baptism, and receive laying on of hands by a bishop (BCP, p. 412). Adults baptized with the laying on of hands by a bishop are considered to be confirmed.

Reception (Christian Commitment): Baptized persons who have been members of another Christian fellowship and who wish to be affiliated with the Episcopal Church may make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their baptism in the presence of a bishop. The bishop lays hands on each candidate for reception and says, "We recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion" (BCP, p. 418). Candidates for reception normally have made a mature commitment in another Christian fellowship.

Reaffirmation (of Baptismal Vows): The BCP refers to those persons already baptized who are presented to the bishop in the context of a service of Baptism or Confirmation to reaffirm their baptismal vows. These might be persons returning to the church after a period of unbelief or those who have entered a new level of spiritual life. The BCP does not specify who these persons are, and a variety of interpretation exists. The BCP provides a form to be used for reaffirmation of baptismal vows instead of the confirmation formula (BCP, p. 419). The word "renewal" rather than "reaffirmation" is used to describe the reaffirming of the baptismal covenant by the entire congregation at Baptism, Confirmation, or the Easter Vigil (BCP, p. 292).

Cyprus Friendship Program

Cyprus, located in the eastern Mediterranean, east of Greece, south of Turkey, north of Egypt and west of Syria, has been divided by a patrolled UN buffer zone since 1974, with Turkish-speaking Muslims on the north and Greek-speaking Christians on the south.  The Cyprus Friendship Program (CFP) brings together teenagers from both Cypriot communities to promote peaceful interaction and understanding between the two groups. CFP is a year-long peace-building and leadership training program in Cyprus, with a four week cultural exchange component in the United States in the summer. By developing cross-cultural friendships, the teens build mutual respect for each other, breaking down the historical stereotypes and mistrust that exist. Upon return to Cyprus, the teens are in a position to share the message with family and friends of their own communities that Greek-speaking and Turkish-speaking Cypriots can live together peacefully. Indeed, many of the students who have participated in the program are doing just that - working together for peace.

If you would like to know how you can contribute to Cyprus Friendship Program, please contact Warren Muir at warrenm@cyprusfriendship.org. For more information you can visit the website:  http://cyprusfriendship.org/

Thou Shalt Not....

... tease those in the frozen tundra by sending warm weather pics in late February!

So maybe it's not one of THE Commandments, and I'm sure we will all forgive him, but this photo arrived from Phil Wasmuth this morning. He says:

I'm submitting a photo for possible use in the E-News that was taken last night at a wonderful dinner hosted by Wayne and Nancy Ghirardini at their home in Naples Florida. The dinner was also attended by Tom and Donna Cote, and John and Claudia Foster

Best wishes from a much warmer place.
