Annual Meeting This Sunday Following 9:00 am Worship

All are welcome to attend our extended coffee hour and annual meeting this week where we will review how we lived out our mission during 2014, elect vestry members to lead us, and look forward to the coming year.

Rector's Reflections

God Heals Persons and Communities

When Jesus heals us, we are empowered to serve others. While at first glance it might seem that Jesus' healing of Peter's mother-in-law was self-serving, on further reflection we see the same result in nearly all of his signs and miracles. The object of Jesus' compassion now has new responsibilities. In the very next chapter a paralytic lowered through the ceiling is raised, only to become the center of a religious controversy (Mark 2:3-12), as was the man who lay by the pool of Beth-zatha for thirty-eight years (John 5:2-15). When Jesus calms the storm (Mark 4:35-41) the disciples have to row the rest of the way! Any meaningful encounter with Jesus will result in our being changed, which in turn alters the way we see our relationship to the needs of others and the world.

This week we gather for one worship service at 9:00 am that will include a healing rite. Our Lord Jesus healed many as a sign of the reign of God come near and sent the disciples to continue this work of healing. After the sermon on Sunday will be a time for prayer, and the laying on of hands entrusting to God the reconciler of the world, all who are in need of healing. You are invited to come forward for personal healing or you may participate in this rite on behalf of another. During the rite we will sing "There is a Balm in Gilead" ...

There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;

there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work's in vain,

but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.

If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul,

you can tell the love of Jesus and say, "He died for all."

Don't ever be discouraged, for Jesus is your friend;

and if you lack for knowledge he'll ne'er refuse to lend.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

We will again begin the season of Lent with a party! On Shrove Tuesday, February 17th when we are preparing to be shriven (that is to ask forgiveness, make confession, do penance during the season of Lent) we engage in the tradition to indulge in foods that will be fasted from during Lent (or alternatively, to use up the fat and sugar and other items which will not be used during the season of less indulgence). Our youth will host a pancake supper and we will celebrate with a small bonfire to burn the palms from last year in order to make ashes. Please join us on Tuesday, February 17 at 5 pm in the parish hall and bring your family, friends and neighbors! A free will offering will be accepted.

Ash Wednesday is February 18th

Please join us for worship at 12:00 noon, Bible Study w/Eucharist at 3:00 + 7:00 pm.

We Make the Road By Walking Together in Lent

Please join us for a casual Bible Study + Eucharist gathering on Wednesdays at 3:00 pm or 7:00 pm in the All Saints' Library this Lent. Our theme and primary texts follow...

February Outreach Luncheon

Outreach Luncheon for February will be here on Thursday 2/26/15. All Saints will be cooking for the guests and the menu is meatloaf, scalloped potatoes, cranberry salad and cookies. Please look for the sign up sheet that will be on the bulletin next Sunday. As always, volunteers are needed for setup, serving and cleanup. Mark your calendars and ready your kitchens for this important ministry. Any questions, please contact Marge Morris 569-6073 or Donna in the church office. Thank you.

New Office Hours

Our Parish Administrator, Donna Young, has recently left her part-time position as Program Director with the Eastern Lakes Region Housing Coalition and will be the new part-time administrative assistant at First Congregational Church in Wakefield. We are pleased to accommodate her transition by adjusting our office hours as of Monday, February 9th:

MONDAY: Office Closed

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY:  9:00 am - noon

FRIDAY:  9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Good Dog

Phil Wasmuth shared these photos from last week's service. Chris Christiansen and Ralph Cornwell will soon be saying good bye to Saco, the service dog they have trained. Saco has been assigned a client and will soon put to good use all of the loving care Chris & Ralph provided. In thanksgiving and celebration, Saco was blessed by Pastor Bill. We will miss seeing Saco at church but wish heartfelt congratulations to Ralph, Chris, & Saco.

Seasonal Worship Notes

During the season of Epiphany we have been using Christ Be Our Light as our canticle/hymn of praise which we learned during Advent (we will use a Kyrie in Lent) and we have been using the Proclamation of Faith we have used the past couple of years at Christmas (we will go back to the Nicene Creed in Lent).

New Members will be received Sunday, March 22nd

The Rt. Rev. A. Robert Hirschfeld will visit All Saints' on Sunday, March 22, 2015. During his visit any individuals who wish to officially become members of the church will be welcomed through: Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows, or the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Please review the various rites below and contact our rector: pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com if you wish to prepare for membership during February and March.

Confirmation: The sacramental rite in which the candidates "express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop" (BCP, p. 860). Those who were baptized at an early age and those baptized as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop are expected to make a mature public affirmation of their faith, recommit themselves to the responsibilities of their baptism, and receive laying on of hands by a bishop (BCP, p. 412). Adults baptized with the laying on of hands by a bishop are considered to be confirmed.

Reception (Christian Commitment): Baptized persons who have been members of another Christian fellowship and who wish to be affiliated with the Episcopal Church may make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their baptism in the presence of a bishop. The bishop lays hands on each candidate for reception and says, "We recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion" (BCP, p. 418). Candidates for reception normally have made a mature commitment in another Christian fellowship.

Reaffirmation (of Baptismal Vows): The BCP refers to those persons already baptized who are presented to the bishop in the context of a service of Baptism or Confirmation to reaffirm their baptismal vows. These might be persons returning to the church after a period of unbelief or those who have entered a new level of spiritual life. The BCP does not specify who these persons are, and a variety of interpretation exists. The BCP provides a form to be used for reaffirmation of baptismal vows instead of the confirmation formula (BCP, p. 419). The word "renewal" rather than "reaffirmation" is used to describe the reaffirming of the baptismal covenant by the entire congregation at Baptism, Confirmation, or the Easter Vigil (BCP, p. 292).

ECW Meeting Rescheduled

The next meeting is February 11th. Please mark your calendars of this change in date.

How to Join All Saints
Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out. Baptism in this or any Christian church, confirmation or reception by a bishop of the Episcopal Church or of a church in communion of the Episcopal  Church (expected of all adult members), attendance, reception of Holy communion, and some sort of financial commitment. Of course, some people claim membership to our churches because a long-lost relative once attended, and this is fine by us. We believe the church should reflect the open and accepting arms of Jesus. Life Ministries
All Saints is going to be featuring a food monthly that is in need for the Life Ministries Food Pantry. We welcome any and all donations of non-perishable items. January's food is boxed or individual serving bowls of macaroni and cheese. Please place donations in the basket in the Narthex. Thank you for all donations!
