Rector's Reflections

Rules or Relationship?

Do you want to be right, or do you want to have a relationship? When a teenager spends $200 on the world's coolest sunglasses is it the time to comment on the foolishness of the purchase or to simply smile and nod? May the people of Corinth eat meat sacrificed to idols? Paul seems to suggest that it does not really matter where the meat comes from. What matters is how the people you care about feel about that meat. Will it challenge their faith? Will it become a stumbling block to the weak? Do you want to be right, or do you want to have a relationship?

This theme continues in the gospel. The laws prohibiting work on the Sabbath carry deep meaning for many people of faith, and yet on this Sabbath Jesus rebukes an unclean spirit and frees a man. Jesus chooses to care for the man and to free him, rather than worry over the details of the law. In this instance Jesus is not condemned for his choice, as he will be later. But his fame begins to spread throughout the region. That too will later prove dangerous, yet it is also a sign of the evangelical nature of the faith. This is not a private faith, held closely and kept hidden. Rather it is an outgoing faith spread from person to person throughout the world.

To this day people continue to place barriers and restrictions on the faith. Congregations do this in intentional and unintentional ways, for example, by talking with friends during coffee hour and not welcoming guests, or sharing your annoyance with a parent about an enthusiastic child in worship. What are some of the ways people might be kept from a relationship with Jesus by the barriers we create at All Saints'?

All Saints' Affirmation Request

What you are doing is much more than a service that supplies God's people with what they need. It is something that will make many others thank God.

2 Corinthians 9:12

There is a tradition at All Saints' of affirming those parishioners who, through their volunteerism in church and the community, best exemplify the spirit of All Saints' at our annual meeting. This year (and in the future) I am asking for input from our faith community to nominate individuals for recognition. Please forward name(s) and reason(s) for their affirmation to: pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com by this Monday, February 2nd.

Thank you!

Seasonal Worship Notes

During the season of Epiphany we have been using Christ Be Our Light as our canticle/hymn of praise which we learned during Advent (we will use a Kyrie in Lent) and we have been using the Proclamation of Faith we have used the past couple of years at Christmas (we will go back to the Nicene Creed in Lent).

Help Wanted... and wanted... and...
  1. Lord & Tailor sorters are needed for Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 am until 11 am. Any time that you would be able to help sort would be appreciated.
  2. Additionally, Jo West is retiring from the role of scheduler of the Lord & Tailor volunteers covering shifts in the shop. We are looking for someone to take on this responsibility. Full training will be done and Jo will be here for support. This is done monthly and doesn't take much time, most done via email.
  3. Counters are needed for weekly entries to our accounting system and preparation of bank deposits-shared and only 4 months a year.
  4. AED inspections are done monthly and an easy process-someone is needed to handle this important task

Please contact the church office if you can help with any of these ministries. 569-3453

New Members will be received Sunday, March 22nd

The Rt. Rev. A. Robert Hirschfeld will visit All Saints' on Sunday, March 22, 2015. During his visit any individuals who wish to officially become members of the church will be welcomed through: Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows, or the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Please review the various rites below and contact our rector: pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com if you wish to prepare for membership during February and March.

Confirmation: The sacramental rite in which the candidates "express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop" (BCP, p. 860). Those who were baptized at an early age and those baptized as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop are expected to make a mature public affirmation of their faith, recommit themselves to the responsibilities of their baptism, and receive laying on of hands by a bishop (BCP, p. 412). Adults baptized with the laying on of hands by a bishop are considered to be confirmed.

Reception (Christian Commitment): Baptized persons who have been members of another Christian fellowship and who wish to be affiliated with the Episcopal Church may make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their baptism in the presence of a bishop. The bishop lays hands on each candidate for reception and says, "We recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion" (BCP, p. 418). Candidates for reception normally have made a mature commitment in another Christian fellowship.

Reaffirmation (of Baptismal Vows): The BCP refers to those persons already baptized who are presented to the bishop in the context of a service of Baptism or Confirmation to reaffirm their baptismal vows. These might be persons returning to the church after a period of unbelief or those who have entered a new level of spiritual life. The BCP does not specify who these persons are, and a variety of interpretation exists. The BCP provides a form to be used for reaffirmation of baptismal vows instead of the confirmation formula (BCP, p. 419). The word "renewal" rather than "reaffirmation" is used to describe the reaffirming of the baptismal covenant by the entire congregation at Baptism, Confirmation, or the Easter Vigil (BCP, p. 292).

We Make the Road By Walking

How to Join All Saints
Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out. Baptism in this or any Christian church, confirmation or reception by a bishop of the Episcopal Church or of a church in communion of the Episcopal  Church (expected of all adult members), attendance, reception of Holy communion, and some sort of financial commitment. Of course, some people claim membership to our churches because a long-lost relative once attended, and this is fine by us. We believe the church should reflect the open and accepting arms of Jesus. Life Ministries
All Saints is going to be featuring a food monthly that is in need for the Life Ministries Food Pantry. We welcome any and all donations of non-perishable items. January's food is boxed or individual serving bowls of macaroni and cheese. Please place donations in the basket in the Narthex. Thank you for all donations!
Pecans
ECW Pecans are still for sale for $12.00 per bag in the church office.
